He is at the 17th ordinaryAfrican Union Summit on¶·Accelerating YouthEmpowerment for SustainableDevelopment" in Malaborepresenting his country.

Aguinaldo was inspired at ayoung age by his mother·s career in diplomacy that led him tochoose his own carrier path. Hischoice of career was inspired byhis desire to learn and interactwith people from diverse set of cultures and countries. He  believes to change the situationof young people in Africa.Young people should actually bethe ones contributing tosolutions. In working, involvingand integrating in the system of the state, young people canmake a difference, he believes.Elaborating his point, heremarks that ¶· change comesfrom within«·· and if youngpeople want to make adifference in their situation, theyshould consider workingtowards integrating in to thesystem rather than fighting it.He also adds that young peopleshould practice self discipline in

any level they are working, studying and volunteering .

He seems to be pessimistic aboutthe outcome of the summittaking place here in Malabo.According to the youngdelegate, the best and desiredscenario would be for theleaders to come up with acompressive action plan but,he says, for reasons that theAfrican Union is facing afinancial problem the summitwill not be able to focus onyouth empowerment.

As the regular contributorsfor the AU budget, Egyptand Libya, are faced withregime changes andinsecurity; they have not paidtheir due to the AfricanUnion. Evidently, many o

the African Union member states are now focused moreon the urgent peace andsecurity issues of the continentrather than prioritizing the

summit·s theme of youthempowerment and

development . All in all, hehopes and urges young people of Africa to work together with theAfrican union and member

states to achieve the desired goaof youth development andempowerment.

The cultural nights of the second

batch of the African Union YouthVolunteer Corps (AU-YVC) have

 been very eventful.

Drawn from diverse Africansocieties, the volunteers have been

able to showcase different aspectsof their cultures in fun-educativeways.

The past two weeks havewitnessed the use of drama,

historical narratives, traditional

and contemporary African music

in representing various cultures, from the kind of dress they wear,to their greeting, dance

steps,wedding activities and an

unraveling of severalmyths/biases. It has been fun allthe way and educative as well.

Prominent, in the lessons fromthese activities, is the sense of

integration that the Volunteering

initiative is about.

Africa is indeed unique and has a

lot of unexplored stories that is

always an awe to people thatcome in contact with them.

These set of volunteers reallyknow how to socialize, portrayingthe true brotherly spirit of Africa.

If you ever get a chance to go andvisit the trainees at the µCentro

Cultural¶ here in Malabo, you

would think they had all grown up

together.

Summit spotlight

By Daniel Adugna

The issue of youth development, empowerment and leadership is increasing in importance through the development

agenda of national governments, regional entities and international development organizations, that include the AU

Commission¶s efforts to build youth capacities for quality and meaningful participation in development and decisionmaking processes. Most notably, there is a new and strong momentum to promote the participation of youths and youthgroups, in a wide range of policy dialogues and policy development initiatives to ensure that youth perspectives are

addressed in these processes and are taken into account for implementation.

The following are some of the compelling evidences that confirm the continental impetus for increased attention to the

African youth development agenda:

y  The African Youth Charter and its rapid entry into force,y  The celebration of the Year of African Youth in 2008 and the annual celebration of the African Youth Day every

1st of November,

y  The declaration of a Decade (2009-2018) for Youth development, and its approved 10 year-plan of action,

y The decision to devote the July 2011 Heads of State and Government Summit on youth empowerment in Africa.

The continental efforts resonate with initiatives at the global level. The year 2011 ( August 12, 2010 ² August 12),was declared by the UN General Assembly as the International Year of the Youth and several youth-relatedactivities and events have been planned for implementation during the Year 2011 in keeping with the UnitedNations Plan of Action.

y  During the 15th Ordinary Session of the African Union Heads of State and Government, held in Uganda in2010, the Assembly adopted ¶Accelerating Youth Empowerment for Sustainable Development· as the themefor the next AU Summit.
