Change in Vanderbilt start times

Beginning with today’s Round of 16 in the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams, starting times will be noon and 7 p.m. Screens will be in use.

By John Carruthers

This year, the Canadian Bridge Federation will induct William Anderson, Boris Baran, Mark Molson and Peter Nagy into the CBF Hall of Fame in a ceremony at the Canadian Bridge Championships in Montréal on May 1.

William AndersonBill Anderson may be the least-known member

of the CBF Hall of Fame, but he has been the most influential. It is no exaggeration to say that Bill has influenced every single bridge player in the world. He did this through his development of the distributional point count for Charles Goren. In the mid-Forties, Charlie came to Bill, a long-time friend and brilliant mathematician, and asked Anderson to undertake the mathematical research needed to prove whether a hand’s trick-taking potential could be totally evaluated for suit bidding as well as notrump bidding, on a point-count basis. the 4-3-2-1 Work point count was that it was fine for notrump bidding with balanced hands, but was notoriously inaccurate for suit evaluation. At the time, nearly all players still used the Culbertson honor-trick method of evaluating their hands for suit bidding.

Bill spent two years working on the problem. His first task was to verify whether the Work point count method was accurate – he discovered that, although it could be bettered slightly mathematically, the combination of its simplicity and accuracy could not be improved upon. He then set about resolving Goren’s main issue – how to evaluate hands for suit bidding. Bill thus developed the 3-2-1 point scheme for evaluating hands with voids, singletons and doubletons respectively.

Goren paid homage to Anderson in his book “Point Count Bidding in Contract Bridge” (Simon & Shuster, 1949). From the Introduction to that work:

The Canadian Bridge Federation Hall of Fame will induct four new members May 1 at the Canadian Bridge Championships in Montreal. The new members are, from left, William Anderson, Boris Baran, Mark Molson and Peter Nagy.

Since he took over as World Bridge Federation president at the end of 2010, Gianarrigo Rona has shown himself to be a man full of ideas. One of his latest is a two-pronged effort aimed at

promoting youth bridge while also helping smaller national bridge organizations with their funding.

In the fall of this year, Rona said, the WBF plans to begin daily online bridge games for WBF masterpoints, the proceeds going to support efforts to recruit more Junior players — and to provide financial assistance to smaller bridge federations.

“There are many small countries with dedicated people,” he said, “but they don’t have resources.”

He said he hopes more players will participate in the online WBF games if they know that the entry fees are going to the two worthy causes.

Rona has been in Memphis conducting meetings of the WBF management committee, and he took time on Wednesday to discuss the venue for the 2nd World Mind Sports Games, of which bridge will be a part, has been determined for 2012.

The InsiderThe hotel and convention center now

understand that after coffee, diet drinks are the beverage of choice during bridge play for our players. After a brief outage yesterday morning, the Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi pipelines have been restored and will flow for the rest of the NABC. This is another example of no matter how often the meeting planners tell the local businesses something, they sometimes don’t believe it until they see it. The planners tell the local restaurants to expect a rush around 4:30 or 5:00, but many don’t open early. The planners tell the hotel the bar will be jammed at 11:30, but many still send half their staff home at 10 p.m. because business is slow. The planners tell the city to notify the cab drivers to hang out at specific times, but you can still walk out to the cab line at 5:00 and there may not be a cab in sight. The planners tell, tell, tell, but the hotels don’t hear, don’t hear, don’t hear, The planners will keep trying and someday hope to find the magic to make themselves heard.

Insider quick tips. Rizzo’s Café: small but awfully good for dinner. The Fire Museum: one hot museum that was designed by the same guys who worked with ACBL to do the Horn Lake masterpiece. The National Ornamental Metal Museum: one of the best-kept secrets in Memphis. The National Civil Rights Museum: moving. Rehab: a bar with a demographic quite a bit younger than the ACBL, but what a great name for a club. And, a walk along the river through Tom Lee Park with a great view of the “M” bridge. (Memphians still call it the new bridge even though it is has been there for 40 years or so.)

The SC and SC2B had a policy disagreement today. As expected, the SC prevailed. The bone of contention? What is the optimum number of retired Navy Seals one should have on one’s payroll? While agreeing that an SC should always have at least four on duty 24 - 7, the SC felt that a total of 28 was an underbid, maintaining that 36 was the bare minimum. SC2B thought this was a waste of money. After trying to explain to the SC what the phrase “waste of money” means, SC2B finally had to agree with the SC, who had calmly explained what the phrase “Do you really want to work here?” means. So following a toast of single malts, the two of them headed to the Corner Bar at the Peabody with a combined entourage of 14 Seals.

The United States Bridge Federation will determine U.S. representatives in the Open, Women’s and Senior events. Canadian teams will be selected by the Canadian Bridge Federation.

The Mixed Teams is a transnational event, meaning teams can be composed of players from different countries.

Rona said the Mixed Teams will begin on Friday, Aug. 17, with Swiss qualifying to the round of 16, with knockout format to the conclusion on Aug. 23.

Lille, Rona said, is an interesting city with a mild climate – high temperatures in the low 70s – and inexpensive hotels and restaurants. He said that for North Americans planning to attend the tournament, the best plan is to fly to Paris (Charles De Gaulle Airport) and take a 45-minute trip on a fast train to Lille. The city is in northern France on the border with Belgium. Brussels is also about 40 minutes away by rail.

Besides planning for the new online tournaments, Rona said the WBF is in the process of redesigning the website with the assistance of ACBL Board Member Al Levy and Kitty Cooper.

Rona said the WBF Technology Committee, chaired by Levy, is always on the lookout for ways to make the bridge experience better for the players and spectators. An example was the new system of card-reading cameras placed on a select number of tables at the world championships in Veldhoven, Netherlands, last fall. Spectators could follow the play card by card, and the video record of the bidding and play made certain rulings at the table easier. The plan is to have such cameras on all tables at future championships.

This and most other issues of the Daily Bulletin have been put together by none other than Kathy Stemley, who will be forgiven if she is a bit distracted today as the Buckeyes of her alma mater (Ohio State) take on Cincinnati in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament (March Madness). Come what may, Kathy promises to expertly produce another Daily Bulletin for you tomorrow.

Book signingBrent Manley, chief editor of the 7th edition of

the Official Encyclopedia of Bridge, will be joined by co-editors Barry Rigal and Tracey Yarbro in signing copies of the book at 7 p.m. today at the Convention Center book stall. Manley will also sign copies of Precision Today, the book he wrote with David Berkowitz.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS

Thinking Bridgeby Eddie Kantar

Dlr: North ♠ A Q 7 6 Vul: Both ♥ K 9 7 6 ♦ 10 2 ♣ A 10 3 ♠ K J ♠ 10 9 4 2 ♥ 8 5 4 2 ♥ 3 ♦ Q J 8 4 ♦ A 9 7 6 3 ♣ 7 6 2 ♣ K 5 4 ♠ 8 5 3 ♥ A Q J 10 ♦ K 5 ♣ Q J 9 8 West North East South 1♣ Pass 1♥ Pass 2♥ Pass 4♥ All Pass

Opening lead: ♦Q Bidding commentary: North has an

automatic raise to 2♥. It is a major error to rebid 1♠ after the 1♥ response intending to support hearts later. Delayed support shows three-card support. As South, even if North has three hearts for the raise to 2♥, bidding 4♥ stands out given the strength of your hand and the strength of your hearts not to mention a double fit.

Lead commentary: Only two adjacent honors (Q-J) are needed to lead an honor against

a suit contract. At notrump, the lead of the queen shows a suit headed by the Q-J-10, Q-J-9 or, exceptionally, the A-Q-J.

Defensive commentary: As East, rise with the ♦A in case South has a singleton king. At trick two, looking at this non-threatening dummy, a passive defense seems best, so return the ♦6, your original fourth-highest diamond. It is important to return the proper card. Some partners watch!

Play commentary: As South, after winning the ♦K, play the ♥A Q, intending to draw trumps before taking the club finesse. However, when East discards on the second heart, switch to plan B. You dare not draw trumps and turn this into a notrump hand before taking the club finesse. If you do and the finesse loses, their diamonds are all winners. Finesse the club now. After it loses and a likely club is returned, draw trumps, run the clubs and take the spade finesse. It works!

Defensive commentary #2: As East, when discarding on hearts, keep length parity with dummy’s spades. When dummy has a four-card side suit, a defender who has four cards in the suit with at least one of them higher than dummy’s lowest card should hang on to all four cards. For example, if dummy has the ♠A K Q 9 and you have the ♠10 7 6 2, hang on to your spade. With the ♠8 6 3 2, however, you can afford to discard spades.

Elvis warns: “Fools Rush In”

Good morning! Here you are, starting another wonderful day filled with ACBL activities, games, interesting (and crazy) people to meet, great food to eat, exciting, confusing and evil boards to play.

Ah, the good life. And here I am

trapped at my computer, trying to dream up more deathless prose to fill this column. I must admit I procrastinated, not turning on The Beast until after my second cup of coffee, because I

couldn’t think of anything to say today (how rare is that!? I must be coming down with the flu.)

As always, just when despair began to creep in, one of my Faithful Readers came through for me. Look what popped into my email!

Hi Marti; Why is it that just when I think I’m beginning to understand this game, something new pops up — yet another situation where I feel under water. Is there no end?

(Author’s note: There is no end. Get used to it.)

Here’s what I held:♠A K 10 9 8 5 2 ♥K Q ♦— ♣K 8 5 4

My partner opened 1♦ and I bid 4NT Blackwood. I know you aren’t supposed to use Blackwood with a void, but I couldn’t visualize a better sequence. My partner showed one ace (turned out he had ♥A 5 4), so I held my nose and jumped into the deep end of the pool. The fact that I bid and made slam is immaterial. I am looking for a better way to get to the proper place. Some people bid the hand 1♦ – 1♠; 2♦ – 4♠ and didn’t get to their slam. Some people bid 1♦ – 1♠; 2♦ – 3♣, then they passed 3NT or bid 4♠, ending the auction.

Any suggestions on how to bid this freakish hand?

Signed,Singing Flat Notes in Memphis. Before I share my Gems of Wisdom on the

subject, I want to turn to The Memphis Flash (another alias for Elvis) and see what he has to say.

You’ll recognize this immediately!Fools rush in, where angels fear to tread And so I come to you my love My heart above my head Though I see the danger there If there’s a chance for me Then I don’t care

Could there be any more relevant lyrics? Once again, the King hit just the right note. And now (although that’s a hard act to follow), here’s what I have to say.

Dear Flat,The most important concept I want

to communicate to you is this: Your using Blackwood with a void is not your real sin. Your real sin is diving in before you check to see if there’s any water in that deep end.

When your partner opens and you hold a hand like that, you sure do hope you are heading for a slam. You have all the time and bidding space in the world to find out exactly where you belong.

All you need to do to position yourself for the best contract is get your partner to bid again. Just name a new suit. Your first bid should be 1♠. That’s all. Just a nice, quiet, forcing bid, a new suit by an unpassed responder (that would be you).

Find out more about partner’s suit. Is she distributional? Should you be in a suit? Maybe she’s got another suit to mention, showing nine or more cards in two suits. Maybe she’ll rebid notrump, showing a balanced hand. Maybe she’s got a big hand and a grand slam is a possibility. Give her a chance to talk to you. This is a duet!

When your pard rebids 2♦ (which she did in the other sequences you mentioned), she is giving you a huge amount of information. First, she has six diamonds. Second, there’s something wrong with the shape of her hand, or she would have rebid notrump. Third, she’s got a minimum hand of no more than 14 high-card points, and probably a hunk of it is distribution. Because of that distributional hand, it sounds like you’re going to be in a suited contract rather than notrump.

Now, your next problem is whether to ask for aces using Blackwood. Being a beginner, you

don’t have enough tools in your toolbox to handle this situation with precision, let alone confidence. The Top 40 Singers have all sorts of goodies (like cuebids and splinters) to get them to the right spot. If your only tool is Blackwood, you just have to do what you did … take the plunge. I seem to be mixing water and tool metaphors here, but you get the idea.

If pard answers with one ace, you are at a disadvantage compared to the more experienced players. If it’s the ♦A, you are sunk. If partner has either of the other two aces, you at least have a chance for slam. If pard answers with two aces you’re in business. But with just one ace?

Listen to Elvis. What have you got to lose? The main point of this, however, is that you

should not go directly to Blackwood. You need to know more about pard’s hand.

Congratulations, by the way, for being willing to rush in. As you gain in knowledge, fill your took kit, learn more instruments, you’ll gain the skills. But there is absolutely no substitute for audacity and courage. Your skills will catch up eventually.

As you can see, I need to hear from you. We don’t want this page to be blank tomorrow, so email me with your triumphs and tribulations, be they in the deep end or the wading pool. [email protected]

Women’s Pairs competefor Whitehead Trophy

Play begins today in the Whitehead Women’s Pairs with two qualifying sessions, followed by two final sessions tomorrow.

This is the 79th Women’s Pairs. At stake is the Whitehead Trophy, donated in 1930 by Wilbur C. Whitehead of New York, a great bridge authority and a member of the team that won the Vanderbilt Cup in 1928, the first year it was in play.

Whitehead (1866-1931) was president of the Simplex Automobile Company, but bridge held such a fascination for him that he retired from business in 1910 to devote his life to bridge.

He was the inventor of many bidding and play conventions, the quick-trick table of card values, the Whitehead system of requirements for original bids and responses and the Whitehead table of preferential leads.

Whitehead was instrumental in standardizing procedures in auction bridge and later in contract bridge.Winners:1930 Olive Peterson, Maud Zontlein1931 Vivi Hanson, Elinor Murdoch1932 Mrs. Jay S. Open Pairs competitors vie for Silodor Trophy

The Silodor Open Pairs is a four-session event consisting of two qualifying and two final sessions. The winners’ names are engraved on the Silodor Trophy, presented in memory of Sidney Silodor, winner of the Bermuda Bowl, the McKenney Trophy and more than 30 North American championships.

Silodor, a member of the team that won the first Bermuda Bowl World Championship in 1950, won the Vanderbilt eight times, the Reisinger six times, the Spingold, the Open Pairs and the Master Mixed Teams three times each and the Mixed Pairs five times.

Barry Crane holds the record in the event with seven victories.

Silodor was an original member of the Bridge Hall of Fame, elected in the Sixties when the institution was the province of its creator, The Bridge World magazine.

The trophy was presented in 1963 in memory of Silodor and made retroactive to include winners of the event, which began in 1958.Previous winners:1958 Leonard Harmon, Ivar Stakgold1959 Lew Mathe, Edward Taylor1960 Robert Jordan, Alvin Roth1961 Mark Hodges, Hampton Hume1962 Robert Jordan, Arthur Robinson1963 Norman Kay, Sidney Silodor1964 Barry Crane, Oswald Jacoby1965 John Biddle, James Wisemiller1966 Edgar Kaplan, Norman Kay1967 Harvey Cohen, Maury Genud1968 Ronald Balu, Richard Spero1969 Robert Freedman, James Mathis1970 Barry Crane, John Fisher1971 1-2. experimentation. But, with the assistance of William M. Anderson of Toronto, head of one of Canada’s foremost life insurance companies and an actuary of great renown, I was able to develop a scale of values which will work effectively in an overwhelming majority of hands.”

And later…“It is appropriate to make acknowledgement,

here, to all those who have contributed both directly and indirectly to this effort…Above all, to William M. Anderson, who not only is the last word where mathematical problems are concerned, but whose broad understanding of the fundamental theories of the game I was able to put to very practical use.”

On Saturday, Aug. 22, 1981, in “Goren on Bridge,” his newspaper column, Goren discussed the development of point-count bidding as follows:

“…I took my problem to a friend of mine who was an actuary – Bill Anderson of Toronto. It was he who devised the distributional point-count that, in conjunction with the Milton Work count, is still the basis of what most people teach and play today…the only thing I am sorry about in the whole matter is that the great amount of work put into point-count bidding by Bill Anderson, and the accuracy and simplicity of his concepts, has not been fully recognized.”

Bill Anderson was an acknowledged genius: he graduated from the University of Toronto with honors in mathematics and physics, joined the North American Life Assurance Company upon graduation and soon become the youngest-ever actuary in Canada. He rose to president, then chairman, of North American Life and became president of both the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the U.S.-based Society of Actuaries. He was awarded a fellowship in the Faculty of Actuaries of Scotland in 1944. Only 14 of the fellowships had been awarded since the Faculty’s inception more than 100 years before. Bill was responsible for developing and introducing the Code of Professional Conduct for actuaries, putting the profession on the same footing as the medical and legal professions.

Oswald Jacoby – at the time the youngest-ever American to become an actuary – once declared about Bill Anderson:

“I used to claim I was the best actuary among bridge players but quickly abandoned that claim after meeting Bill Anderson, after which I claimed only to be the best bridge player among actuaries.”

Anderson was a successful player, Life Master No. 357, playing with his wife, Marjorie, most of the time, and winning a North American Bridge Championship (NABC) with her. Here is Bill in action on a deal reported in the Goren syndicated bridge column:

“The 4-3-2-1 point count was introduced by Bryant McCampbell in 1915 and publicized by Milton Work in his many writings. However, it was used almost only for notrump bidding. It was not until a Toronto actuary, William Anderson, developed the distributional count in the 40s that point count swept the bridge world.

“Besides his fascination with the mathematical aspects of bridge, Anderson was an accomplished

player. He held the West cards on today’s hand…” Dlr: East ♠ A K 9 5 Vul: E-W ♥ K Q 10 7 6 4 ♦ Q 4 ♣ 7 ♠ Q J 10 6 4 ♠ 8 3 ♥ A 9 5 ♥ J 8 3 2 ♦ K J ♦ 7 5 ♣ A Q 10 ♣ J 9 6 3 2 ♠ 7 2 ♥ — ♦ A 10 9 8 6 3 2 ♣ K 8 5 4 West North East South Pass Pass 1♠ Dbl Pass 3♦ Pass 3♥ Pass 4♦ Pass 5♦ Pass Pass Dbl All Pass

Anderson led the ♠Q, won in the dummy. Declarer led a club with the view to obtaining ruffs in the dummy, and ducked it to West’s 10. Anderson found the only continuation to sink the contract: the ♦K. Declarer won the ace, but now a club ruff would bring West’s trump jack back into play and no club ruff would result in two more club losers.

Just as Milton Work popularized the 4-3-2-1 count developed by Bryant McCampbell, Goren popularized Anderson’s 3-2-1 count. “Point Count Bidding in Contract Bridge” was a runaway bestseller, eventually selling more than 3 million copies. There were 12 reprintings in its first five years and it was translated into many languages. William Anderson belongs with the most-influential figures in the game, alongside Work, Culbertson and Goren.

Boris Baran and Mark MolsonJust as the names of Romulus and Remus,

Héloise and Abélard and Lewis and Clark are forever linked in history, the names of “Mark and Boris” are forever entwined in Canadian bridge. Although many of their successes came as partners, they were successful with others as well. Mark and Boris won seven Canadian National Team Championships (CNTC), one Canadian Open Pairs Championship and five North American Bridge Championships together. They came second in the 1995 Bermuda Bowl, second in the 1992 Pan-American Games and tied for third in the 1990 Rosenblum in Geneva, Switzerland, being denied a place in the final by a scoring error, the correction disallowed upon appeal, one of the most notorious incidents in World Bridge Federation history.

Mark won two more NABCs with other partners, the Reisinger and the Blue Ribbon Pairs, and Boris has won a Senior World Team Championship, an eighth CNTC and three Canadian Senior Team Championships without Mark. Mark won the Richmond Trophy as top Canadian masterpoint winner five times. It is entirely appropriate that they be inducted into the CBF Hall of Fame together. Mark died in 2006 of complications during surgery following a massive heart attack while playing the other game he loved, golf.

One of Boris’s more notable deals occurred in that ill-fated semifinal match against Germany in the 1990 Rosenblum…

in 3NT and with not many winners here, it looked to be a huge loss – the vugraph commentators were predicting minus 500 or 800. Bitschene led the ♣A and shifted to a low diamond, a good start for Baran. He won the jack with the queen and returned the suit. North won the ace, and still reluctant to play hearts lest Boris have the jack, shifted to a trump. Boris won the 9 and played another spade to dummy’s 8. The two high diamonds followed for heart discards as North followed helplessly.

Baran now administered the coup de grâce – he exited from dummy with the ♥K! Ludewig had to win and, with no trumps or diamonds left, had to play a club or a heart, either one of which would allow Boris to score his three remaining trumps separately. That came to five spade tricks and three diamond tricks, plus 670 and 11 IMPs to Canada.

In the 1992 Pan-American Games, Canada played Brazil in one semifinal. losing option, of which there were now two. Had Mark now played on clubs to knock out the king, counting on the diamond finesse, Marcelo Branco would have won the club and cleared spades, setting up the suit while Chagas had a surprise entry in the ♦Q. The other losing option was to play the ♦K and another diamond – when Chagas won the queen, a heart play by West would require declarer to win the ace and play another (before or after cashing the diamonds), not an obvious play.

Molson devised a beautiful counter – when he won the second spade in hand, he played his low diamond! Chagas was flabbergasted. No matter whether he won it or ducked it, Molson had an entry to the third spade trick and could knock out the ♣K at his leisure.

Peter NagyPeter Nagy was part of the young group of

Montréal players mentored by Sam Gold. He performed the unique feat of coming second twice in the World Open Pairs, each time with a different partner, and both times losing to the same player, Marcelo Branco of Brazil. Each time, Branco also played with a different partner. Peter won four NABCs, two CNTCs and a bronze medal in the Rosenblum Teams.

Peter emigrated to Canada in 1957 after a hair-raising escape from Budapest during the Hungarian Revolution. He mastered English so quickly that he became his high school class valedictorian in Montréal in 1961. After graduating from Princeton University, he entered the options market in New York, later Chicago, before retiring to Las Vegas to play the other game he loved, poker. Like Molson, he died in 2003 after suffering a heart attack playing his second-favorite game, at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.

Peter was renowned for his conservatism in the bidding, preferring to win his points with terrific card play. He once agreed that he needed a hand that most players would open with a strong two-bid in order for him to jump shift. On the following deal from the 1978 World Open Pairs, Nagy and Kokish met two of the other contenders, Carol van Oppen and André Mulder from the Netherlands…

(1) Multi (weak two-bid in a major)(2) Pass or correctWith the ♣A offside, 4♠ would have failed by

a trick. Nagy could see that if that were the case, perhaps he could make 5♥. He ruffed the spade lead and tried the ♥Q, which was allowed to hold. No more trumps could be played, so Nagy switched his attention to diamonds, leading a low one to his nine. This was also ducked, but the next diamond was taken with the ace and East continued with spades, again ruffed in the dummy.

Nagy was now in dummy for the last time and needed to make his club play immediately. He had to find clubs and hearts 3-2 and the ♣K onside. The 10 would need to be in East if he were able to pick up the suit (unless West had K-10 doubleton). He reviewed what he knew about the hand: West had six spades and two diamonds (if his count signal was to be believed). If he had three hearts, he’d have a doubleton club and vice versa. Nagy thought it more likely that East had ducked with ace-third of hearts than with ace-doubleton, meaning West would be 6=2=2=3. Thus, when in dummy for the final time, Peter led the ♣Q, picking up the suit. West covered with the king and Peter won, forced out the ♥A, ruffed the spade return, drew the last trump and played the ♣J, peering eagerly at East’s card. It was the 10 and he had plus 650 for a 95% score.

Top In Leaders USA teams competing in China

After the 2012 Summer NABC in Philadelphia, the World Bridge Federation will conduct the World Junior Championships in Taicang, China (near Shanghai) from July 24 to Aug. 4. The United States Bridge Federation will send two teams each to the Patiño Cup (under 26) and the Damiani Cup (under 21) and one team to the Rona Cup (women under 26).

This is the second of five profiles of the teams representing the USBF in China. Patiño Cup – USA 2Donna Compton (NPC)

Stephen DrodgeStephen, 21,

completed two years at Northern Virginia Community College and is now taking a break from formal education, playing a lot of bridge and tutoring high school students in math and science. At his first NABC, in 2008, he won the national 299er pairs. The following year, he won the Manfield Non-Life Master Pairs in San Diego. Stephen’s team won his district’s Flight A GNT this year.

Sean GannonSean learned to

play bridge from his parents and played duplicate for the first time with with his father. One of his memorable bridge moments was a finish in the overalls for the IMP Pairs in Orlando. Sean, 19, is now a sophomore at Wake Forest University, majoring in math.

Lei JinLei finished

high school in Shanghai and earned a dual bachelor of science degree from the University of Michigan (Biomedical Engineering) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (Electrical and Computer Engineering). Lei, 23, is a PhD candidate in the Neuroscience Graduate Program at the University of Southern California. He has been playing bridge for four years and is happy that his first international event will be near his hometown, Shanghai.

Zhuo WangJimmy, 21

years old, a native of Beijing, is in his third year of a PhD program in Applied Mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania. He studies mathematical models of neurons (“computational neuroscience”) that can explain neurological and behavioral data. He learned bridge in high school and created an application for his tablet computer that allowed him to play bridge in class, without cards (and without being noticed by the instructor). Jimmy represented the USA two years ago in the Junior World Championships in Philadelphia. He and his colleagues from Penn won the ACBL’s Collegiate Championship in 2010 and 2011.

Zizhuo WangJust before his

24th birthday this July, Zizhuo, a native of Beijing, will receive his PhD in management science and engineering from Stanford, where he also earned a master’s degree in Mathematical Finance in 2010. His academic work focuses on the theory and applications of operations research. When he returns from the Junior World Championships in Taicang, he will start work as an assistant professor of industrial and systems engineering at the University of Minnesota. He started to play bridge at age 11 when he was in high school and was president of the Tsinghua Bridge Club from 2004-2006. In 2009, Zizhou was part of the Stanford team that won the North American Collegiate Championship.

Erli ZhouErli, 20, is

working toward a BS from the University of Southern California with a double major in mathematics and business. He expects to graduate in May 2013, after which he plans to enroll in graduate school. He learned bridge about a decade ago by reading his dad’s collection of bridge books and is excited to be playing in the world championships near his native Shanghai. Erli also enjoys traveling, video games and racing cars.

A Look BackGreat deals from Past NABCs

West called it #*%&?#!This deal from the 1962 Fall Nationals was

written up by Charles Goren in the February 1963 Bridge Bulletin:

Lew Mathe, the California expert, playing with Mrs. Mathe, recognized the opportunity for a most unusual end-play in this deal from the Mixed Pairs event-but couldn’t put a name to it. Nor could any of the experts who have seen it. Dlr: North ♠ 6 4 2 Vul: Both ♥ K J 6 5 ♦ 4 ♣ A K J 8 2 ♠ Q 10 9 3 ♠ 7 ♥ 10 8 3 2 ♥ A Q 9 7 4 ♦ K 10 7 6 3 ♦ A 8 2 ♣ — ♣ 10 9 5 3 ♠ A K J 8 5 ♥— ♦ Q J 9 5 ♣ Q 7 6 4 West North East South Mrs. Mathe Mathe 1♣ 1♥ 1♠ 2♥ Pass Pass 3♥ Pass 3NT Pass 4♣ Pass 4♠ Pass Pass Double All Pass

Opening lead: ♥2Ruffing the opening lead, declarer led a club

toward dummy. West discarded. A diamond return was won by East’s ace and a club return ruffed by West, who continued hearts, forcing South to ruff again. After cashing the ♠A, declarer led the ♦Q, covered by West and ruffed in dummy. Declarer returned to his hand with a high trump, arriving at this position: ♠ 6 4 2 ♥ K 6 ♦ 4 ♣ K J 8 ♠ Q ♠ ♥ 8 3 ♥ A Q ♦ 10 7 ♦ 8 ♣ — ♣ 10 9 ♠ J ♥— ♦ J 9 ♣ Q 7

South needed four of the last five tricks to make his doubled contract. His lead of the ♣Q had West over a barrel. If West ruffed, that would be his last trick. If he discarded a diamond, South would cash the jack and lead the established 9. When, instead, West discarded a heart, South overtook with dummy’s ♣K, ruffed a heart and led his remaining club. When West ruffed, he had to lead away from his ♦10, giving South the last two tricks.

English expert Alan Truscott, pressed to baptize this wild child of strange distributions, called it an “overtaking strip squeeze throw-in.” West called it something less printable.

(1) Transfer to spades.(2) Game forcing.Contract: 3NT by EastOpening lead: ♥8Table result: Down one, North-South plus 50Director ruling: 3NT by East, down one,

North-South plus 50Committee ruling: 3NT by East, made three,

East-West plus 400Facts: The director was at the table to handle

a slow play problem when this incident occurred. Although the director did not clearly hear declarer’s designation of the card nor see him point at any cards, declarer called for a “top diamond” and pointed at the clubs. The director missed the word “top.” Very shortly after the designation, declarer attempted to change the designation to “top club.” The play had proceeded:T1: ♥8, ♥6, ♥J, ♥AT2: ♣2, ♣3, ♣10, ♣QT3: ♥9, ♥K, ♥2, ♠2T4: ♦2, ♦4, ♦K, ♦6T5: ♠Q, ♠3, ♦3, ♠KT6: ♠7, ♠J, ♠4, ♦5T7: ♠A, ♠8, ♦8, ♥4

The Ruling: Pursuant to Law 45C4(a), the Director ruled that the diamond was the designated card and must be played. As a consequence, the table result became 3NT by East, down one, North-South plus 50.

The Appeal: East-West appealed the director’s ruling, and East alone attended the hearing.

Appealing Side: East reported that the call for a diamond from the dummy was a “misspeak.” His intention was to cash the clubs and then the heart; taking his nine tricks to make his contract. He then planned to attempt an endplay for an overtrick.

The Committee Decision: The intent of the declarer was obvious from his line of play. He had set up his nine tricks to fulfill his contract and leading a diamond from the dummy at trick eight would be irrational. Such irrationality by itself does not make the play retractable, but when combined with credible evidence that declarer had called for a “top diamond” when there was only one in dummy and had pointed to the three clubs in dummy, it becomes clear that it was his intention to say “club” when he said “diamond.” Further, the committee considered the promptness with which declarer had attempted to change his designation and found that there had been no pause for thought. The committee, therefore, overturned the director’s ruling and changed the final result to 3NT making three for East-West plus 400.

The Committee: Fred King (Chairman), Jim Thurtell, and Paul Janicki.

(1) Alerted and explained by West as majors.(2) Disputed break in tempo (BIT) in excess of

10 seconds.(3) In response to a question about North’s

double, South’s response was disputed. East-West reported that South said, “Penalty.” South reported that he said, “probably penalty.”

The Facts: East-West called the director after South bid 4♣. East-West reported that North hesitated in excess of 10 seconds before his double of 3♠. North-South disputed the length of the hesitation. North admitted to a hesitation of 15 to 20 seconds, while South reported that he did not notice the hesitation. There was also a dispute regarding South’s explanation of North’s double of 3♠.

The Ruling: The director ruled pursuant to Laws 16 & 12C1(e) that the table result should be adjusted to 3♠ doubled by West, making four for East-West plus 630. The director determined that a BIT beyond 10 seconds might have occurred, that the BIT demonstrably suggested that South should pull the double, and that pass is a logical alternative to bidding 4♣.

The Appeal: North-South appealed the director’s ruling, and North, South and West appeared at the hearing.

Appealing Side: North-South reported that there was a definite BIT by North prior to the double of 3♠. North argued that despite the BIT, passing the double by South was not a logical alternative to bidding 4♣.

Non-Appealing Side: East-West reported that passing the double of 3♠ was a logical alternative to bidding. East-West also claimed that the double was explained to North-South as “almost penalty.”

The Committee Decision: While the BIT by North prior to his double of 3♠ did suggest to South that bidding might well be better than passing, the committee decided that passing by South was not a logical alternative to bidding. After East announced both majors, probably 5-5, and West jumped to 3♠, the committee could not believe that South had any alternative to bidding over the double.

The Committee: James Thurtell (Chairman), Ed Lazarus, and Fred King.

Bridge with Momma MayBy Rick Logan

Momma May (McCutchen) of Blytheville AR, was my grandmother. At five feet tall, 100 pounds, with golden hair, big brown eyes and a pale round face, she looked more like a child’s doll than a competitive bridge player.

Charles GorenIn the Fifties, Momma May had an opportunity

to play with Charles Goren. Against a 4♠ contract, she led a trump. After the play was over, Goren fussed at her for that lead. Politely, but firmly, she said, “Mr. Goren, the auction indicated a trump lead should probably work well. At least, page 189 of your book says that.” He replied, “Well, the little tiger is right,” and called her that from then on.

fountain, I was in my best coat and tie and playing with Momma May. She proudly introduced me to every pair she knew as her grandson who was loving the game she loved. Then, when one particular couple came to the table, She said, “John and Mary so-and- so, I’d like you to meet Ricky Logan. He’s my gigolo.” Needless-to-say, I turned three shades of red. My grandmother!

Arlington Hotel, Hot Springs AR At the 1966 regional in the Hot Springs

Arlington Hotel, I was playing with Momma May and my parents, Beau and Lulu Logan, in the Thursday board-a-match teams. David and Allan Siebert, Oswald and Jim Jacoby, Jack and Betty Ann Kennedy and Tommy and Carol Sanders all were in the event. After the first session, we were tied with the Siebert team, and finished second to them in the event. It has been a wonderful family memory.

Staring at the Ceiling When Momma May was waiting for another

round to start, she would seemingly stare at the ceiling and rapidly finger her bottom lip. She was analyzing the hands to see if she could have done better.

Ricky-boy Momma May would say, “Now, Ricky-boy, just

correct your errors and take your gifts.”

Sixty-four young players from three area schools descended on the Spring NABC on Wednesday morning to play in their first tournament. Dana Norton, coordinator in the ACBL’s Education Department, said it all went well. “The kids were excited,” she said. “It was a nice field trip for them.”

It all started with a Learn to Play Bridge workshop conducted by Patty Tucker, founder of Atlanta Junior Bridge, last fall. The teachers who took the workshop – from Horn Lake (MS) Intermediate School, Pleasant Hill Elementary (Olive Branch MS) and Houston Middle School (Germantown TN) – went back and taught bridge to

their young players. They turned out on Wednesday for their

tournament, run by IN Directors Judy Cotterman and Priscilla Smith. Each table had an adult volunteer on hand to help the youngsters.

“It was a good event,” said Norton.

Shark tankBy Steve Cooper, Toronto

I have been running a small duplicate game in the basement “Activity” room at a Seniors retirement residence for about five years now. I inherited the game from Ed, who used to run the weekly game. Now and then, he would ask me to

fill in for him when he had some scheduling conflict. After a while, I was doing it once a month. Then he moved away and it was left to me.

Every Wednesday we have a game that ranges from three to five tables. No masterpoints are at stake. We play 15 or 16

boards. Although I have recently become eligible for the ACBL Senior events myself, I am still younger than the average participant by about 30 years! One regular just turned 100. Last week, when we sat down at her table, my partner asked how she was. “Old and crotchety,” she replied with a smile. I looked her in the eye, returned her smile, and said, “You’re not that crotchety.” In any case, most participants are LOLs, bearing the old-fashioned bridge meaning, before LOL was a way to text laughter The men don’t seem to make it this far.

The players all live in apartments in the building. Over the years that I have been there, the game has lost about seven or eight souls, presumably still playing in The Great Beyond. As a result, we always have to scrounge for players, and actively try to recruit new residents into the game. Some have not played in some time (“I used to play before the war”). Although non-duplicate bridge is popular in the building, many are intimidated by the prospect of facing these “sharks,” so the duplicate game remains small.

I try to restrict myself to directing the game, but am often pressed into service to fill out a table. Sometimes, I have to grab my cell phone and make some calls to try to pry forth a reluctant player. Some are seduced by the prospect of playing with me as their partner. Others just liked to be asked.

One of my current favorite partners is Mary. She is said to be in her mid-90’s, although nobody knows for sure. I am old enough to know better than to ask a lady her age! Recently, when I phoned and asked her to play, she agreed quickly, then asked,” Where is the game?” Although her memory comes and goes, she does have a firm grasp of how to play the odds: Consider the following exchange:

Myrtle: “Do you have any holiday plans this year, Stephen?”

Stephen: “Yes, we are planning on a visit to Newfoundland in June”.

Myrtle: “Oh, I am going on a visit there this coming July”

Betty: “I have never been there, myself. (Turning to face Mary…) Have you ever been there, Mary?”

Mary gives it some careful consideration, and

replies, “Probably!”But you want to hear some stories. The ladies like to raise my bids. They are quite

content to have me play the hands. Last week, Mary picked up a hand with 9 high-card points and 5-5 in the red suits, and opened 1♥. I responded 1♠ and she bid 2♦. But when I bid 2NT, she raised me to three! Tabling the dummy, she said, “He plays them well.” Not that well!

And sometimes the defense is deadly: ♠ A 7 6 ♥ A 5 4 ♦ J 10 5 ♣ K Q 9 3

♠ K 8 2 ♥ K Q 3 2 ♦ 8 7 5 ♣ J 10 4

My partner opened 1♣ as North, then raised my 1♥ to 2♥. The opening lead was a fourth-best diamond, and they cleared three rounds of the suit, with West winning the third round. Could I hope to salvage anything from this? If the hearts were 3-3 (they were), I would make plus 140, while those in notrump could not avoid five losers. And notrump seemed a likely spot – I estimated that most Norths would rebid 1NT. After all, that dummy is particularly notrumpy. It was so notrumpy, that it mesmerized my opponents into thinking we were playing in notrump, as West now tried to “cash” the 13th diamond, and East, from the ♥8 7 6, “pitched” a heart on it! Now I had a trump loser, and was held to 110.

Playing with another lady, I encountered a sequence for the first time (and I have been playing since 1967): With both red, I picked up:♠A J 5 ♥ 6 5 3 2 ♦Q 8 5 4 ♣A 7and heard 1♥ on my left and 2♦ on my right. Opener jump rebid 3♥, and my partner now doubled! Ordinarily, I would expect that to be a premature (and misguided – surely the sequence is forcing?!?) attempt at penalties, but my heart length suggested otherwise. What kind of hand might my partner have. She could not bid over 1♥, but could now bid when they both showed lots of strength? And vulnerable, to boot! Well, I seemed to have no choice, so fearfully I bid 3♠. Opener rebid 4♥, and now partner bid 4♠, which was passed out! She tracked with♠K10 9 6 4 3 ♥— ♦3 2 ♣K 8 6 5 4.

Later, after scoring up my game, I asked pard why she did not bid the first time. She told me she has a strict policy of not coming in initially without at least 10 HCP. Having limited her hand….

Later that same session, I held:♠— ♥A 10 9 6 5 3 ♦K Q 8 4 ♣9 4 2

Partner passed, and RHO started with 1♠. I overcalled 2♥, white against red, and LHO’s 4♠ was passed around to me. I decided that my shape and the vulnerability warranted one more call. With an expert partner, I might bid 4NT to try to suggest

a two-card disparity between my suit lengths, intending to correct 5♣ to 5♦. But in this game, a natural 5♦ seemed more prudent, as I did not want partner to give me the number of her aces over 4NT.

The 5♦ bid surprised everyone, as game bids usually provoke everyone into writing down the contract. They rarely wait for the three passes “to make it official.” However, my partner apparently had a problem over my 5♦. With the idea of a sacrifice bid being outside her experience, she carefully considered

♠6 3 ♥8 4 2 ♦A 10 9 5 3 ♣A 8 6and raised me to six! On the actual spade lead, I found hearts 2-2, diamonds 3-1, and scored up plus 920 (nobody ever doubles me).

Finally, the piece de resistance. ♠ A 10 6 ♥ 6 4 2 ♦ 8 ♣ A Q J 7 6 3

♠ K J 9 ♥ K J 5 ♦ A J 7 5 3 2 ♣ 2 West North East South 1♦ Pass 2♣ Pass 2NT Pass 3NT All Pass

Receiving a low spade lead, I considered my prospects. These LOLs lead fourth-best religiously, regardless of the bidding. It could even be into declarer’s rebid suit. I know the standard of play in this game is not world class, but I would not want to pass up on a classic entry-creating maneuver in spades. Thus, I carefully won the king, preserving the A-10 in dummy as two later entries should the clubs not be running. The club hook lost, and a low diamond came back. Trying to get some value out of dummy’s 8, I ducked and the king came up! A low diamond back was covered by the queen and ace. I now tabled a low spade.

At this point, I want to take time out to reflect on a couple of common expressions that are used to describe a player’s skill level.

“How does John play?” “Oh, he can follow suit”I have also heard the expression, “He can tell a

club from a spade.”Well, this lady could not do either. Her eyesight

is failing. At some tables, we use bidding boxes to assist with memory and hearing issues. At other tables, they hear better than they see, so they bid the old-fashioned way, verbally.

In any case, LHO followed to my low spade with a club. I pointed out that I had played a spade, not a club. She apologized profusely, retrieved her club, leaned forward to get a good read on the dummy, then plopped the ♠Q on the table! With the clubs not splitting, I soon found myself down one. I never asked her motivation.

The names have been changed.

Sue Emery Memorial Day“Sue Emery was much more than my chief

assistant on the Bridge Bulletin,” says Henry Francis, executive editor of the Bridge Bulletin while was there. “She was my confidant, my crutch, my right hand, my shining star. Our lives were happily intermingled throughout our careers at ACBL. Thirty persons from all over North America contributed to this memorial, a reflection of her impact on the world of bridge.”

Her decision to leave the directing field and become a writer came after the death of her beloved husband, Big John Emery. She didn’t want to return to tournaments where all her memories of John

would compound her grief. Her untiring efforts to make sure that everything in the Bulletin was factually correct. Her smiling face that greeted every visitor to the Daily Bulletin office — some of the younger players even called her “Mother.” Her open house — many a distressed bridge traveler found a haven in her home. Her bridge and personal friendships that endured through the years, right up to the day she died.

C.C. Wei MemorialThe late C.C. Wei enjoyed playing bridge,

but he felt something was missing in the bidding structure. Always one to follow through — consider his success in the tanker-building business — he set

about to seek a solution. The result was Precision, a bidding system based on the Forcing Club. Players all over the world use some form of the Forcing Club as their basic system.

John Touliatos M.D.John Touliatos is a brilliant physician who

specializes in ear, nose and throat. He is the energetic father of five children. He is dedicated to his family and his fellow man, which is why, when his aunt Donna asked him to support the NABC, he gladly agreed. His aunt is registration chairman for the tournament.

Jane Pridgen MemorialJane Pridgen epitomized the term “good friend.”

There was nothing she would not do for you, and though she was short in stature, her heart was so big almost everyone she met became her friend. She was always doing something for someone, and served on the board of Baptist’s Camp Good Grief for bereaved children, Ladies of St. Jude, and was a deacon at Lindenwood Christian Church.

Words to describe Jane were fun-loving, outspoken, and fortitude. When her husband became terminally ill, Jane continued to take him, in a wheelchair, to plays, dinner, dancing, and gym workouts. Her own illness, diagnosed in 2006, was met with the same courageous and graceful attitude. Friends who greatly admired Jane’s indomitable spirit secured this sponsorship in her name.

Patti Davis/ Norma Trafton Memorial

Both ladies were long time members of the ACBL who deeply loved and enjoyed the game of bridge. Their generosity of friendship as partners is deeply missed. One of those partners, Ellie Fristensky, remembers them with this sponsorship.

Mississippi Bridge AssociationThis bridge community, Unit 138, covers all of

Donna TouliatosDonna Touliatos’ interest in bridge skyrocketed

after she read an Audrey Grant teaching book. Not long after she started playing at the M.A. Lightman Bridge Club, she was elected to the Unit 144 and the Lightman Boards. She took one look around the club and said, “We need a change.” And a change the club got — new lights, new tables, a new refrigerator, new panel — you name it. She made fast progress in bridge as well, becoming a Life Master quickly. She is hospitality chairman for this NABC.

Carol and the late Tom SandersCarol and Tom Sanders of Nashville are one of

the top husband-wife combinations in bridge history — just ask Coley McGinnis and Linda Hanson, star players from Nashville. Carol, familiarly known as Mama Bear, won four world championships and captained another on her way to becoming a World Grand Master. An ACBL Grand Master, she was the league’s Honorary Player of the Year

in 1984. A t the North American level, she won 17 championships. She also found time to act in several administrative roles, chair several sectionals and regionals and raise six children.

Tom had a nickname too — Papa Bear. He was an excellent player but became better known for his outstanding contributions to the ACBL. He was (1) the founder of the ACBL Charity Foundation and served as its first president, (2) ACBL president in 1986 and a member of the Board of Directors for 10 years, (3) ACBL and WBF Appeals Committee member, (4) lifetime member of ACBL Board of Governors. He was the only Vanderbilt graduate ever to win the Vanderbilt Trophy and was a participant in Charles Goren’s Championship Bridge series in the Sixties. An ACBL Grand Life Master, he won 14 North American championships.

Carol PatersonThere’s really only one word that describes

Carol Paterson — dynamo! When sets her mind to do something, it gets done. Any local player who had anything to do with preparations for this NABC knows exactly what we mean. Carol was everywhere — preparing tours, setting up hospitality for the spouses of Board members, arranging for music, helping select gifts and prizes, setting up hospitality arrangements — you name it — she either did it or she helped.
