Demonstrative Solutions To Reduce Noise Pollution In Industrial Areas,Using Finishing Technologies In Textile Materials.
This project aims to validate demonstrative solutions to reducenoised pollution mainly in industrial zones that are close to theurban areas. Finishing technologies in textile material will beused to that purpose. These solutions based on textile materials, will be used as constructive elements in industrial facilities walls, floors, ceilings and acoustic barrier walls in roads, in order tominimize the environmental noise impact.
The use of textile materials in the infrastructures can providesignificant improvements in the acoustic absorption of all thefrequency range of interest to this field, including low and mid- to-low frequencies. These frequency ranges show more problemsin the decrease of noise levels. Textile materials are mostlylightweight, resistant, and adaptable substrates which can betreated with finishing processes to improve their basic properties.
Production of synthetic and natural textile materials permitsoptimized products to be produced through the design andadaptation of structural and morphologic properties; in additiontextile materials can be coated and finished improving acousticabsorption and isolation. Moreover, by their characteristics, thesematerials are ideal for the decrease of the scenic impact.

AITEX is a Spanish non‐profit making private asso‐ciation formed by textile and related companies. In the field of standardisation and quality, it has advanced testing laboratories: chemistry, physics and fire behaviour, that are authorised to award several certifications. AITEX participates in various EC initiatives, supporting the Spanish companies in the development of a growing number of di‐verse EU‐funded projects. AITEX has coordinated several LIFE projects such as:
♦ “The application of advanced photo‐oxidation techniques in the treatment of residual waters in the Textile industry” (LIFEENV99/E/346).
♦ “Water Purification Tertiary Treatment using Photo‐oxidation at semi‐industrial scale” (LIFE03 ENV/E/000102).
♦ “Alternatives for waste volume reduction in the textile sector through the application of minimisation measures in the production pro‐cess and in the consumption” (LIFE05 EN‐V/E/000285) awarded as “Best LIFE Environ‐ment 2008‐2009 Project” by EC and “Best Envi‐ronment European Project of Valencian Comu‐nity 2008 by Conselleria de Presidencia.

Expected results This project intends to find a satisfactory and efficient demonstrative solution to reduce noise pollution in industrial areas, using finishing technologies in textile materials. ♦ Find textile materials with specific acoustic
properties. ♦ Characterize the acquired textile materials
(acoustic properties and fire behaviour). ♦ Improve the acoustic base‐properties with
finishing processes. It is expected to improve minimum 20% absorption coefficient in normal incidence.
♦ Select the solutions which show the best results as acoustic materials. It is expected to work with between three and five different materials depending on the preliminary results.
♦ Improve the lab results because in this case the absorption occurs in all directions not only at normal incidence.
Project objectives:
This project aims to validate demonstrative solutions to reduce noised pollution mainly in industrial zones that are close to the urban areas. Finishing technologies in textile material will be used to that purpose. These solutions based on textile materials, will be used as constructive elements in industrial facilities walls, floors, ceilings and acoustic barrier walls in roads, in order to minimize the environmental noise impact.
Specific Objectives:
♦ To know the national and European acoustic specifications in building and environmental requirements, mainly to industrial areas.
♦ To define specific textile materials which have interesting properties like sound absorption materials and moreover that can be improved and optimized.
♦ To work with different kinds of finishing processes (electrospinning, plasma surface treatments and coatings) to improve results of basic textile materials.
♦ To validate the demonstrative solutions or prototype materials developed in acoustic field to reduced noise pollution (noise barriers, encapsulated systems, etc).
♦ To study the compatibility of the developed solutions with the fire behaviour in order to abide by the specific laws and requirements in this field.
♦ The dissemination and transfer of these solutions to construction industry, to textile and acoustic isolation materials companies via leaflets, web pages, publication in specialist magazines, mail shots and demonstrations at fairs etc.
♦ To organize events at European level in order to disseminate the Project results to all the target public.

Antecedents Acoustic pollution is generated by a not wished sound, which affects negatively to the quality of life and manages to hinder even the realization of the daily tasks. It is necessary to act through the development of products and materials ca‐pable to palliate the negative effects caused by the acoustic pollution. Materials used at present, feature some prob‐lems related with their installation, durability, and efficacy in some parts of the frequency range of interest. This project tries to offer innovative solutions which improve the existing products used as acoustics isolation. It is known intuitively the ne‐cessity to create lightweight products, few volu‐minous and with a high acoustic efficiency. Textile materials can offer a very good behaviour with some coatings and finishes, which are ap‐plied by means of last generation technologies (electrospinning of nanofibers or technical finish‐ing treatments and coatings).

 Sonido y Ruido

Summary
Porous materials are widely used as sound absorbing materials in noise control engineering. In view of the growing interest in sustainable construction a new field involves the creation of the acoustic absorbents using recycled material based on industrial residues or derived from plants. Some authors already have models of prediction for this type of eco-materials. In this work, materials made from natural fibres (vegetative materials) or materials made from recycled materials are investigated as sound absorbers. The sound absorption coefficient and air flow resistivity of these materials have been evaluated and the potential applications in building acoustics and/or in noise barriers are proposed.
PACS 43.55 Ev 1. Introduction1
Noise and vibration are of concern with many mechanical systems, including industrial machines, home appliances, vehicles, buildings [1-3] and control noise road traffic. Porous materials are widely used as sound absorbing materials in noise control engineering. A porous absorbing material is a solid that contains cavities, channels or interstices so those sound waves are able to enter through them. In [4] a different type from pores is described; closed/ open only at one end/ open at two ends. In the same work a classification of the porous materials is realized in cellular, fibrous or granular. The nature of most of the acoustic standards in construction and other scopes has resulted in a growing availability on acoustic materials. Actually, there are a lot of materials with acoustic properties. These materials can be used in urbanistic acoustic [5, 6] but they can’t easily be recycled. Besides which in their manufacture is not always taken into account the commitment to the environment.

1.1. Natural fibers
In recent years we have studied the possibility to insert new acoustic absorbent materials in the market. These materials are made of natural fibers and so they are an ecological and natural product. If we use these materials, we are guaranteeing a complete life cycle; plantation, harvesting, recycling of the fiber.
The manufacture of absorbent material based on natural fibers is not only an ecological problem. The FAO (Food And Agriculture Organization Of The United Nation) have promoted the use of natural fibers expecting the following consequences: Increased demand of the natural fiber, consequently increases the income in the producing countries (improvement in the education, health, etc.)
Besides, there is an important economic factor. In 2005 the polypropylene price increased by 20% and the price of oil, needed to produce the polyester fiber is increasing. However, the export price of natural fibers is dropping [7]. Today there are researches about the use of recycled materials or natural fibers [8-10].
FORUM ACUSTICUM 2011 Coustician, Sound: Template for EAA proceedings 27. June - 1. July, Aalborg
In this paper we submit a feasibility study, from the acoustic point of view, about the use of natural fibers of different origins. These fibers are combined with different percentages of recycled materials or resins.
1.2. Acoustic materials characterization We tested 37 different materials and obtained the sound absorption coefficient with normal incidence [11] and the airflow resistivity for each of them. The first one, sound absorption coefficient, was obtained according to specifications of the Standard UNE EN ISO 10534-2:2004 and the airflow resistivity, was obtained according the Ingar&Dear method [12]. These magnitudes are the parameters that characterize a material as a sound absorbent material when we put this material between two walls. There are also necessary to know the behaviour of an acoustic barrier made from these materials. In the Figures 1 and 2 we can see the experimental devices to do the measurements.

3. Conclusions
Firstly, we want to emphasize that all materials made from natural fibers and used in this research have a typical sound absorption coefficient at normal incidence according to the frequency. This can also be seen in the results that we have obtained about airflow resistivity. In Figure number 3 we can see the results that we obtain with samples about 1 cm of thickness. All of them show a similar value to about 800Hz. From this frequency we know what materials have greater sound absorption. Combinations from low to high absorption are these: 100% sisal, 70% kenaf+30% resin, 50% coco+50% acrylic and PES, 85% kenaf+ 15% Bico, 50% kenaf+50% PP, 70% coco+ 30% resin, 80% hemp+20% PP. Figure 4 shows the results that we obtained with samples about 2 cm of thickness. We can distinguish two different behaviours, sample M8 and sample M14 with a sound absorption coefficient that hardly exceeds the value of 0.2. This value must be surpassed to consider a material as a sound absorbent material. On the other hand, samples M2 and M9 show a typical sound absorption coefficient curve according to the frequency. We can see values almost 1 for the medium-high frequencies. If we check the M9, M8 and M14 composition, we can say that PES and BICO with Cellulose combination is better than PES and BICO with PES, latex or canvas From the results in Figure 5 it can be concluded that combinations with approximately 20% of PET, PP or PES have similar acoustic behaviour.
FORUM ACUSTICUM 2011 Coustician, Sound: Template for EAA proceedings 27. June - 1. July, Aalborg
It presents high values of sound absorption coefficient at normal incidence from midrange. The same does not happen, however if these fibers are combined together with approximately the same percentage (M29). In Figure 6 we can see that the best combination when we have samples of 4cm of thickness is a mixture about 25% recycled acrylic+45%cotton+15% Bico+15%PP. In Figure number 7 we can see practically identical results for samples of 4 and 6 cm of thickness; acrylic percentage of these samples is of 25 and 16%, respectively. Finally, we highlight the results in Figure 8 regarding M28 and M34. Both materials present the same thickness. Both materials present the same percentage of cotton and recycling PP, 45% and 15%. The only difference between them is 40% polyester from M28 and 40% acrylic from M34. Sound absorption coefficient values presented in M28 are the proper acoustical material. Sound absorption coefficient values presented in M34 hardly surpasses the value of 0.2.

There are different several lines of work that posed improvements in current acoustical screens: improvements in design, geometry, materials, etc. This is due to the acoustical screen is a very used element and is part of many action plans to improve the current conditions acoustics. Therefore, aid elements as simulation software or numerical tools can focus the problem, reducing the number of possibilities to test. In this work has created a mathematical model in finite elements, that allows obtain the losses by insertion of different acoustical screens with different conditions.
