Search & RescueA group of teenagers on a trip to The Bahamas was enjoying Spring Break with a game of volleyball on the beach. As they played, someone noticed on a nearby beach that a boat had overturned. The game came to an abrupt end as the teens rushed over to help.

There they found a group of men struggling with their boat—trying to turn it upright. Rather than stand back and watch, the teens jumped into the water, put their young strength to work, and together they were able to turn the capsized vessel upright.What happened that day reminds me of what can happen in Toastmasters. Members are given opportunities to serve as leaders in our clubs and face a task that can’t be done alone. It’s often a struggle to get the work done, but it is important to realize we cannot do everything by ourselves. Our organization is only successful when ALL the members join in and work alongside the leadership of the club, Areas and District. Members make a difference and that’s why you are important to your club’s success. The question that stands out in my mind is: How are we as members helping to keep our organization moving ahead? As an individual - What are you doing?

Almost every week we see news about a search-and-rescue mission. It may involve a child who wanders away from a family picnic and gets lost, or a hiker stranded on a mountain, or people trapped in the rubble following an earthquake like our dear friends in Haiti. The most recent was the search and rescue mission in Italy after the cruise ship disaster. In every case, the people at risk are unable to help themselves. Those who are found and saved usually have lasting gratitude for those who joined in the search and rescued them.

So as Toastmaster members we may need to go on a search and rescue mission to make our clubs successful, to let them know we need them to be a part of our team. Sometimes members fall by the wayside and all we need to do is find them. It may take great effort on our part but we may need to swim out to sea like the teenagers on the beach, or we may need to throw out a line or life vest. Whatever is required, we must be ready and willing to help. Our duty is one of commitment to our organization and it is our responsibility to rescue lost members. Teamwork divides the effort and multiplies the effect! Become a part of the rescue mission today! As the boys did for the men with their boat, by rescuing one member at a time you just might help to turn an entire club – UPRIGHT.

Open House Showcase

Program Dates: January and July Retaining members is essential to the health of a club, and gaining new members is equally vital to its success. For potential members visiting a club, first impressions are paramount. Toastmasters' new Open House Showcase is a great way for clubs to make that first impression a positive one and to attract new members. Clubs that are successful can earn discounts on useful products. How? Follow these simple steps:

Hold a successful Open House in January and/or July.

After the Open House takes place, email your complete marketing package to

marketing@toastmasters.org with your club name and club number in the subject line

and include the following (bulleted items must be included to qualify):

A completed, signed guest list

Pictures of the event

The Open House agenda

Sample marketing materials used to host the Open House (e.g., fliers, brochures,

guest packets, other promotional items)

Your advertising plan

You may also send video footage if you'd like. As many as 50 of the clubs that gain the most new members as a result of their Open House events will receive a 30% discount on their next club order. If any ties occur, the quality of the clubs' marketing packages will determine the winner. All new members of a club must have been on the applicable Open House guest list. The member's join date must be in January or February (for the January Open House) and in July or August (for the July Open House). Complete marketing packages must be received by February 7 (for the January Open House) and August 7 (for the July Open House). Membership applications and payment for members must be received at World Headquarters or online no later than February 29 (for the January showcase) and August 31 (for the July showcase). Clubs do not get credit for transfer or charter members. The 30% discount expires six months after the date of issue and is not valid with any other offer.

If your club uses a ‘FreeToastHost’ website, are you aware that it will be ‘gone’ on February 17? What to do? Don’t wait until the last minute to change over to the new platform. Nothing from your FTH website is transferred to the new platform so if you have documents or photos on there you’ll need to retrieve them before you no longer have access to the old site. EVERYTHING needs to be re-entered.

Like most changes, the new platform is different and takes getting used to as there is nothing about it that is like the one you’ve been using. While some webmasters have made the change quickly and easily, most have not. But if this almost 70-year-old female can do it, so can you!

The first step is to go to http://support.toastmastersclubs.org/ , look at the tabs along the top and select “Request a FreeToastHost2 website”. After completing the requested information, your new web address will be sent to you. You will become very ‘friendly’ with that support website and they are great at answering questions. You will need to set up your own profile there for discussions/questions.

Yes…the FTH2 websites are templates and your site will look very much like every other one. You do have your choice of 3 color combinations. For our club members, we use it mostly for the duty roster and invoices. However, the main purpose is to have a web presence so that visitors can find us. Having a creative, original website isn’t that important to us. We’ve been satisfied with what our free FTH website has given us since 2004...and now it’s even better! Once you get the information to set up administrative information on your site, just take it one step at a time. All of your member information will need to be entered. A big problem for me was the time. Be sure to select this: EST5/EDT

After you begin creating agendas, it will automatically add them to the calendar. There is no Duty Roster function. Modifying an agenda to serve the purpose of a duty roster was a challenge but it’s working now and our members easily use it. (There is also no Invoice feature). Many of our members have written a bio and added a photo to the, ‘Meet our Members’ section. With some time, you will get used to it and appreciate the new features. I recently gave a presentation at the District 47 conference and have sent to many people who attended a step-by-step handout that I would be glad to share.

If you’re not in the LinkedIn Toastmasters discussion group, you’re missing a lot of valuable discussions. It was there that I first learned that we were losing our website and it was there that I’ve gotten help and made friends with Toastmasters around the world. In fact, one man in China is having my info translated into Chinese and then will distribute it to the clubs! One of the LinkedIn people sent me a chart listing the features of the old FTH compared with the new one. I’ll be glad to send that as well. Using the FTH2 support website, LinkedIn discussion and possibly the information that I’ll gladly share, you should have the tools to easily get your website back on track with minimal frustration.

Yes…there are other sites that can be used but the site with Toastmasters International partnership is FTH2. Whether you’re the club webmaster, President, VP-PR or an interested member, make sure your club isn’t caught off guard. Change is difficult and with it comes resistance but, like childbirth, once you have the ‘baby’, you quickly forget the challenges that led up to the pride you have showing off the ‘new arrival’.

Key West Toastmasters site is now back on track at www.keywesttoastmasters.org The new site is a ‘work in progress’ but it’s functioning and will continually improve. Members have all logged in and are gradually adding their profiles. JUNKANOO – The National Festival of The BahamasBy: Anthony (Tony) Longley, DTM – District 47 PRO

Junkanoo is the National Festival of The Bahamas. It captures the ingenuity, artistry and creative powers of the Bahamian people. It represents their roots; it is their heritage.

Junkanoo was brought to the islands of the Caribbean by slaves and played an integral part of the slave era in the 16th and 17th centuries. The festival was first called John Canoe after a West African Chief. Before emancipation, slaves were permitted time off at Christmas to visit with relatives away from the plantations. While spending time together, the families held dance events as a tribute to the memory of their hero, John Canoe.

After slavery was abolished in the colonies in the early 1800’s, the freed slaves continued this tradition. However, during the last two decades most of the islands in the Caribbean have abandoned this practice in favor of new cultural expressions. A few Caribbean countries, namely Bermuda and Jamaica, still carry on the tradition of a John Canoe Festival but none on the scale of The Bahamas.

Following the famous riots of 1942 known as “The Burma Road Riots”, the John Canoe festivities experienced a decline in The Bahamas. Five years later, the festival known as John Canoe was revived. Over the next several years the festival took on a new twist which has seemingly sealed its infinite future. It evolved into a more organized parade and the costumes changed from all cloth to include fringed crepe paper applied in an artistically mosaic arrangement of colors. No one seems to know exactly when or how the name of the festival was modified from John Canoe to “Junkanoo” as it is known today.

The music of Junkanoo is comprised of hand-made drums made from goat and sheep skin, cowbells, whistles, brass horns and other hand-held percussion instruments. “Junkanooers” parade in groups, some as small as 20 to 50 members known as “fun groups”; “Junior groups” usually have between 200 and 400 members while the “senior groups” have as many as 1,000 to 1,500 members. The competition is intense amongst groups as they compete for top prizes in categories like Best Costume, Best Music, Best Dance Troupe and Best Overall Presentation. The groups depict various themes which are heavily researched and held in strictest secrecy until the 11th hour. Some of the larger costumes pieces can take up to 6 months from conception to completion which includes the research, design, building and

decorating phases.

Junkanoo is the main winter tourist attraction in The Bahamas. It is held on Boxing Day (the day after Christmas) and New Year’s Day. In Nassau, the parade begins at mid-night and ends around 1:00 pm. Junkanoo parades are also held in Freeport, Grand Bahama as well as several of the other Family Islands. These however are on smaller scales than the ones held in Nassau. The Bahamian Toastmasters would love to show off this amazing spectacle to you. So to our Florida based fellow Toastmasters we say… “come join us; you’ll have the time of your life!”

Training Is For District Leaders, Too!By: The FAB 5

For many people including Toastmasters, the months of December and January are very exciting times. We find ourselves engaged in many holiday festivities which may include lots of great food, happy times and of course - holiday shopping. In the world of Toastmasters, however, these particular months mean another activity which for us is also a lot of fun! Can you guess what I’m talking about?

If you thought, “Toastmasters Leadership Institute – Club Officers Training”, you were right! But did you know that Club Officers are not the only ones who get to enjoy this phenomenal “drill for skill” exercise twice during the year? In Toastmasters, leadership is by example! So that is why the top tier of all District Executive Teams comprising the Lieutenant Governor, Marketing; Lieutenant Governor, Education and Training and the District Governor must also undergo mandatory semi-annual training in August and January.

This year’s mid-year District Officers Training was held in Atlanta, Georgia from

January 20 - 21, 2012. The event was hosted by District 14; The District Governor is Kene Iloenyosi, DTM. The District 47 team (AKA – The FAB 5) led by District Governor Pamela D. Rolle, DTM was in full attendance. Other members are Matt Kinsey, LGET-East; Kathy Furbush, LGET-West; Hieu Huynh, LGM-East and Ron Rice, LGM-West. We participated in round table and open forum discussions on pertinent issues affecting Toastmasters'

districts.

The team maintained the standard of excellence we established at the initial round of training held in Las Vegas in August 2011 by again winning the prize for best overall team presentation. We effectively illustrated what we learned from the sessions and how we plan to use these ideas and skills to steer District 47 to “President’s Distinguished” status.

Crossroads Toastmasters Club in Plantation has a new location and a new Executive Committee. On October 5, 2011, the members held the Open House meeting at the Governmental Center West (GCW), Plantation, Florida. “The event was a tremendous success. Our membership has grown since and we continue to have visitors who are professionals working in GCW and around the area,” said TM Meifang Marilyn Hu, PMP, DTM.

Meetings are held every other Wednesday from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm in the Governmental Center West, One North University Drive, Plantation, Florida 33324.

Jupiter Toastmasters Leadership Institute (TLI)

It’s December 10, 2011, a sunny and comfortable day in Jupiter, Florida. The venue was Florida Atlantic University (FAU). The event – The Palm Beach County Second Round TLI! Although in the midst of the holiday rush, 143 ready, able and eager Toastmasters showed up to be entertained and effectively trained! Those who were early were greeted at the entrance by the hungry hawk resting in a nearby

tree. We quietly walked by so as not to alarm our feathered friend.

As the Toastmasters filtered in, the event got underway with a sleek format and minimal hubbub. The keynote address was performed by Share Ross of Vixen fame. Not only did she ‘rock the house’ with her motivational words; she performed a few tunes as well. In

the end, it was an extremely successful and information enriched leadership training exercise that was of immense benefit to all.

December 10th Toastmasters Leadership Institute (TLI)

The future leaders of our new district put their time to good use on their Amtrack ride home from the All Aboard Fall Conference. Led by Kathy Furbush, LGET-West, the current leaders and members of Divisions C, G and H put their heads together and came up with a plan to serve both sides of Tampa Bay while also answering a recurring plea to hold TLIs later in the day. Not every Toastmaster is a 'morning person'!

With the support of Fab 5 member Ron Rice, LGM-West, and IPDG Rick Furbush, Division C hosted a morning TLI at Lazydays in Tampa for the early-birds. Ron Rice, LGM-West, and IPDG Rick Furbush then made the 'mad dash' across the bay to be on hand for Division G's afternoon TLI in Pinellas County for the not-so-early-birds.

If this had been a political race, we would still be counting ballots by hand to declare a winner! In the end, Pinellas County nosed out Tampa, having trained 108 club officers to Tampa's 101! The experiment was a resounding success, having trained a total of 209 club officers in the same day.

Approximately 100 Toastmasters, including club officers and non-executives, turned out on Saturday, January 14 for second round District 47 - Bahamas Toastmasters Leadership Institute (TLI). The event was held in Nassau at Xavier’s Lower School, West Bay Street. The official District 47 executive representative was District Governor, Pamela D. Rolle, DTM. In addition to the routine sessions on officer roles, attendees benefitted from sessions such as ‘Building and Sustaining Corporate Clubs’, ‘The Art of Table Topics’, ‘The Journey to President’s Distinguished’ and a special forum – ‘Informal Chat with District Leaders’.

In her general address, Pamela congratulated the officers whose clubs were on schedule with their DCP goals. She thanked the members for their efforts and encouraged them to continue pursuing their personal leadership and educational goals. She said, "As District Leaders, we are here to serve you. Don’t be hesitant about telling us what your needs are and how we can help you. We want you to get the maximum benefit from your Toastmasters experience. When you succeed, your clubs succeed so everything begins and ends with you – the member."

During her remarks, Division I Governor Rachel Ferguson, DTM thanked The Bahamas TLI Chair Glennette Reckley, DTM and commended her on putting together a very successful, high quality program.

Kathy Furbush, LGET West and Family

On December 23rd, after a 10 year battle with lung cancer, Kathy Furbush's mother, Margaret Hanson passed away at home surrounded by loved ones, just 4 days short of her 90th birthday.

Born in Detroit, Michigan to a Swedish immigrant father who passed away when she was five years old, she was raised in a single parent home during the Depression.

She is survived by her six children, eight grandchildren, and two great grandsons.

Although she was never a Toastmaster herself, she was very proud and supportive of Kathy's accomplishments.

Margaret Hanson was a member of Faith Covenant Church, and her favorite charity was the Salvation Army.
