Hello Elephants!

I just wanted to say that I am so proud of our division! These past two

months are what we would call transitioning months where the past

officers train the new officers for the next year. This tends to be very

hectic and even with so many clubs are electing officers for the 2012-

2013 term, our division was still able to show our spirit and dominate

other divisions in spirit battles! Now for the month of April and May, our

division has completed over 2103 hours of service and we have raised

$1076 from various fundraisers! I would like to recognize Diamond Bar

Key Club with the Club of the Month award for completing 953 hours

worth of service, participating in 13 Kiwanis Family Projects, and their

generous donation of $546 to various causes. I am also proud to

announce the Member of the Month, Alice Pan. She has done an

amazing job with taking pictures at all events and she always has a smile

on her face as she continues to serve her community. I know that the

school year is almost over but I encourage everyone to continue attending

events because service never ends! Key Club is a year long club and there

are so many opportunities to build friendships, to become a leader, to

change a life, and to make a difference. We have a lot of upcoming events

and I hope to see all of you there! :) Once again, thank you to everyone

for your amazing service and dedication! We could not have accomplished

what we have without your support!

Stomping through service,

Andy Wong

As a Key Club officer, I enjoy attending service events and helping others. I am proud to say that I have

learned a lot this past month. I am creating stronger bonds with my fellow co-officers and I am starting

to take my love for Key Club to a whole new level. This is all thanks to my new favorite event: The

Special Lanterman Olympics which I attended on Saturday, April 20. At a first glimpse, the Special

Lanterman Olympics was really similar to other Key Club events such as Isaiah’s Rock and the Mt. Sac

Relays. Within the first hour of working, however, I realized that I was wrong. To me, this event was

unique and special. It stood out because of all the dedication in the athletes that competed. Even

though every athlete faced more challenges then I will ever face in my lifetime, they worked hard, gave it

their all and proved it to everyone at the Special Olympics. They overcame every obstacle thrown at

them and made their dreams come true. As a track runner myself, I know how hard it is to push

yourself past your physical limits but every single one of them did it. They pushed themselves and they

all soared with flying colors. They are all champions. I am honored to have been able to help them

reach their goals and I will definitely be the first to sign up for the Special Lanterman Olympics next

year. -Allen Chen

A grueling 1.5K swim, followed by an excruciating 40K bike ride, concluded with a 10K power run. This is

the Bonelli Triathlon. One can easily see how the race participants might feel a bit discouraged before,

during, or even after the race. I guess it’s a good thing they have us spirited Key Clubbers there cheering

them on the entire way! In fact, my job at the most recent Bonelli Triathlon was just that, to cheer the

racers on. All alone, I was stationed out on the bike course anxious to cheer bikers on. I waited for what

seemed to be an eternity until I heard the swoosh of several bike wheels. As the first biker flew by me, I

opened my mouth to shout, but for some reason, no sound came out. Another several bikers flew by me

and I found myself offering no support or encouragement at all. I really was disappointed in myself; but I

just couldn’t get past the awkwardness of suddenly starting a cheer as a biker raced by. I wasn’t sure how to

start the cheering, but I was sure of one thing—it had to start soon. I noticed a new string of bikers hurtling

my way and I decided that it was time to start screaming and shouting. With a ‘power pose’ under my belt,

I cupped my hands around my mouth and cheered my heart out for the incoming bikers. Nearing the end

of the race, I was jumping, shouting, and smiling. What truly put a smile on my face were the mirrored

smiles on the bikers’ faces. One biker even stuck out his hand to give me a high five. And as tired as they

must have been, every single biker gave me a look of gratitude followed by an out-of-breath “thank you.”

After the race had finished, a couple of bikers walked back from the finish line to where I was standing on

the track and actually thanked me for “pumping them up.” Needless to say, I was very touched. Honestly,

the Bonelli Triathlon event was one of the best events I have ever attended. The feeling of being a part of

the bikers’ trek that day made everything worth it—even the feeling of standing for 5 hours without access

to a restroom. I encourage everyone to serve at this event in the future because it really is one worth going

to!

During the past month we had many events such as David and Margaret

Spring Service Day, XTERRA Renegade Triathlon at Bonelli Park, Kiwanis One

Day, April DCM, Kiwaniannes Tea, Oak Mesa Carnival. At David and Margaret

Spring Service Day we helped by doing a lot of painting and packaging nutri grain

bars. It was a lot of hard work especially on a hot day, but everyone had fun. In the

XTERRA Renegade Triathlon at Bonelli Park, we helped out athletes by giving them

food, water, and showing them where to go during their race. Many members felt

inspired watching the athletes run such a long and tiring race. At Kiwanis One Day

which had taken place at Williams Elementary School, we helped package boxes to

send to troops. At the April DCM many members had a lot of fun playing

icebreakers and having a friendly sprit battle. At Kiwanniannes Tea we helped

prepare and serve food to the Kiwanis members. Everyone had a great time and the

food was amazing. Our last event was the Oak Mesa Carnival taken place at Oak

Mesa Elementary School. In this event everyone was assigned a shift to do. It was a

very fun event, remembering your childhood

memories by watching the kids enjoy All articles and visuals from Bonita are submitted by Brandon

In the month of March, Nogales High School’s Key Club hosted a

nacho fundraiser. The sale was a great success, bringing in a total profit

of $100! Now, in May, our club has decided to donate the money towards

The Eliminate Project in the spirit of Eliminate Week (May 6-10). Key Club,

along with the Kiwanis Family and UNICEF, has successfully eliminated

MNT in China! It was also officially announced that on May 9th, with the

assistance of UNICEF and Kiwanis families, MNT has been eliminated in

Iraq! We hope that our contribution, not only continues to help abolish

MNT, but increases awareness as well. Our club and its members feel very

proud to say that our donation has the potential to save about more than

fifty lives. Together we can achieve anything!

The foundation for disabled youths event was very educational and inspiring. Key clubbers received the

opportunity to interact and have fun with the “angels”, or special needs kids, there. Among the many

activities held were, dancing, and arts and crafts. We collaborated this event with Diamond Bar High School

Key Club and Interact from Rowland.

March of Dimes March of Dimes is one of our division’s biggest event. March of Dimes is a walk that helps fundraise for the

health and wellbeing of mothers and prematurely born babies. The weeks prior to this event, many of our

members were able to raise donations from our fellow students, family members, and friends. One of our

members, Jessie Chan, from Rowland high school, raised up to about $100.00. Upon arrival, we were greeted

with the overwhelming crowd which included key clubbers from other divisions. The walk was empowering.

Everywhere you turned, there was someone holding a poster, or giving out bananas and bottled water

supporting you. When we finished the walk, a free lunch was given out and many activities were held.

Activities such as painting, rock climbing, and playing in a bouncy castle. Overall, this was an amazing event

that proved that service can be both fun and meaningful.

Relay for Life Relay for Life was an run held at Northview High School supporting cancer patients. Upon the many booths

there, our booth served free breakfast burritos to cancer patients. However, as breakfast was ending, we came

across the idea of giving out the leftover burritos to some of our men in service who attended the run and

were a few booths away from us. During this event, members were able to meet and interact with survivors,

runners, and some of the people running the booths. By helping out people from different booths set up their

things, we were rewarded with cupcakes, smiles, and thank you.

Key to College

This event introduced us to the many

aspects of college life not just at University of

Riverside, but in other colleges as well. Specifically,

UCR’s Circle K planned this event for 4 other

divisions so that we can learn the tips and tricks to

get into college, and what to do once we are there.

It was was informative and our members had a

great time meeting other divisions and afterwards,

we had our May DCM there as well. I feel that

college could be a new chapter in life and the

college students really made me excited to graduate

soon!
