Key PointsO External Factors

O Illinois adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS)O PARCC will assess students’ mastery of CCSS this YearO PARCC determines adequate yearly progress for

districts/schools

O Challenging New StandardsO College and Career Ready = concepts introduced earlierO Skipping and accelerating are not best practicesO Prerequisites must be taught and mastered

O Internal (Local) FactorsO D34 staff developed our new math curriculum to be fully

aligned with the CCSS.O Teachers choose the groupings, resources, and methodsO Communication & partnership with GBS staff

Challenging New StandardsO Grades 5 and 6 were impacted the most.

Skills and concepts are introduced much earlier.

O Grades 3–5: Concepts, skills, and problem solving are related to multiplication and division of whole numbers and fractions

O Grade 6: Ratios and proportional relationships, and early algebraic expressions and equations

O Even our highest performing students need instruction this year that ensures that the foundational skills and pre-requisites are mastered.

New Standards Require Instructional Shifts & Program Changes

O Standards require significant narrowing and deepening of the way time and energy are spent in the classroom.

O Changes improve:

• identification of students for advanced math program• classroom instruction and assessment practices• adoption of resources that are aligned with CCSS,

providing non-routine, authentic problem-solving experiences.

• monitoring of student performance within D34 and as they transition to GBS

Preparing for PARCCO Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for

College and Careers – replaces ISAT

O Two components:O Performance-Based at the 75% point in the yearO End-of-Year at the 90% point in the year

O Far more rigorous assessment itemsO Interactive, open-ended itemsO Evidence based responses required

Ensuring students have mastered all grade level

standardsO PARCC will assess students’ mastery of

standards.

O Students need multiple exposures – over time – to be prepared for PARCC’s performance-based assessment items.

O Our highest performing students should be exceeding state standards.

Partnering with GBS

O Staff from GBS joined our curriculum committee meetings to discuss standards and courses.

O Regular communication continues with GBS to ensure alignment of courses.

O D34 staff collaborate with GBS staff to align course content, assessment items, and expectations for success.
