SUB-ZERO TREATMENT

Pieces requiringmaximumdimensional stability shouldbesub-zero treated, as volume changes may occur over the courseoftime.Thisapplies,forexample,tomeasuringtoolssuchasgaugesandcertainstructuralcomponents.

Immediatelyafterquenching,thepieceshouldbesub-zerotreatedtobetween–95to–110°F(–70and–80°C)soakingtime3–4hoursfollowedbytempering.Sub-zerotreatmentwill give a hardness increase of 1–3HRC.Avoid intricateshapesastherewillberiskofcracking

NITRIDING

Nitriding will give a hard surface layer which is very resistant to wear and erosion, and also increases corrosion resistance. Atemperatureof975°F(525°C)givesasurfacehardnessofapprox.1250HV1.
