Executive Summary

This report summarizes the dissemination activities carried out by the Mont-Blanc project in the October 2014 – September 2015 period. This period has been characterized by the promotion of the prototype deployment announcement and also with the participation of the Mont-Blanc climbers’ team to the ISC Student Cluster Competition.

Introduction 1

The objective of this report is to present a detailed list of the dissemination activities that took place during the last year of the Mont-Blanc project, as planned in deliverable D 2.1. The activities were carried out in order to promote technical and scientific project results and to ensure the widest possible use of the knowledge generated by the project.

1.1 Branding

In accordance with deliverable D 2.1 (Dissemination Strategy Document), the Mont-Blanc project brand has been continued and applied correctly. The dissemination team has controlled the correct application of its branding in different dissemination materials such as the promotional videos, flyers, social media, booth, etc. during the project’s duration. It has to be said that the Mont-Blanc brand has been widely spread in the HPC community, SC and ISC conferences, and it has also appeared in key scientific publications and press articles. For the above mentioned reasons, the brand has been maintained for the future phases of the project to ensure that it has a long-lasting impact among the HPC community. It has been agreed, that internally the names of Mont-Blanc2 and Mont-Blanc3 will be used, but both projects will be referred to as Mont-Blanc and its extension or Mont-Blanc 2013 – 2016 and Mont-Blanc 2015 – 2018.

1.2 Dissemination materials

1.2.1 Brochure

The Mont-Blanc project brochure has been updated during the project progress. It was also sent to all partners so that they could use it to disseminate the project at local events. The updated brochure has always been available to download on the project webpage http://montblanc-project.eu/sites/default/files/u255/flyer-mb.pdf as well as on the project portal for its internal partners’ use.

The Mont-Blanc prototype represents a first-of-a-kind effort of putting together an HPC cluster powered by mobile processors. Its evaluation will show the advantages and challenges of the Mont-Blanc approach and the feasibility of bringing such design to the next technology readiness level. The successful design, assembly and configuration of the prototype and the porting and tuning of the applications, two of the three objectives of the project, required the effort of most partners during the whole duration of the project. The importance and effort put in these tasks led us to decide to take the evaluation of the prototype beyond the reporting in the corresponding deliverables and target a joint publication congregating all partners involved. The objective is to increase the dissemination of the prototype evaluation results and get the recognition the effort deserves by achieving a publication in a prestigious international journal of the HPC field. All Mont-Blanc partners agreed to contribute to this publication effort. This publication will present the Mont-Blanc prototype architecture to the community, together with a bottom-up evaluation in terms of performance and energy efficiency while comparing it to traditional HPC approaches. The target date for submission is subject to the readiness of the results, initially targeting the end of the year 2015.

1.3.2 Trainings

A sustained, high-quality training and education program is important to guarantee that the continuation of Mont-Blanc project will obtain the expected results as part of the dissemination strategy. A training plan (D2.2) has been submitted. The aim is to organize top-quality face-to-face courses to improve the technical skills of the attendants. The target group is formed by members of the universities and project partners. In particular, the researchers and developers of the different partners, as well as the members of the industrial user group are targeted. The submitted training plan included two courses every year, the first one in March- April and the second one in September-October. The training material is uploaded onto the Mont-Blanc project intranet. Fermín Sánchez has been appointed as coordinator of the training subtask. The overall training plan is running smoothly. A total of 2 trainings have been organized in this period.

One training was organized from October 2014 to September 2015:

Tools for parallel programming with OmpSs, 13-15 April 2015, HLRS, Stuttgart

OmpSs and CompSs oriented to scalability, 8-10 October 2015, Jülich

An additional training was organized as part of PRACE titled “Programming ARM-based prototypes” in Barcelona on May 15th, 2015. The agenda of the above mentioned training session is attached in annex 4.1. The objective is to organize internal training courses for the consortium about programming models to be used in the project. The courses were also open to scientists from the other Exascale projects as well as to members of the End-User Group. All were highly valued by the attendees. The initiatives were successful and the hands-on sessions led to fruitful technical discussions.

1.4 News

The Mont-Blanc website features three types of news: news from the sector so as to build up a community, news generated by the project and news published on different media channels. Furthermore, the dissemination team pushed this information out not only through channels such as the website but also through the newsletter and social media, especially through the Mont-Blanc Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter accounts. A total of 8 pieces of news generated by the project and 31 news published on different media channels were created.

1.4.1 Press mentions

Following the press strategy within the Dissemination Strategy (D2.1), a press release was launched nearly every year or whenever a result should be announced throughout the project. However, in this last period a total of two press releases were launched:

16th June 2015: Innovative embedded architecture for HPC made in Europe This press release announced the deployment of the Mont-Blanc prototype. The text is available here: http://www.montblanc-project.eu/press-corner/news/innovative-embedded-architecture-hpc-made-europe

13th July 2015: Mont-Blanc HPC software stack tested on E4’s HPC platform based on ARM64 Cavium ThunderX processor. The text is available here: http://www.montblanc-project.eu/press-corner/news/mont-blanc-hpc-software-stack-tested-e4%E2%80%99s-hpc-platform-based-arm64-cavium-thunderx

11

A total of 30 mentions in different technical and generic media have been identified. It can be said that the press clipping is mainly focused on IT specialized media as the above mentioned news were mainly addressed to HPC media. The Mont-Blanc website has also been regularly updated with this information: http://montblanc-project.eu/press-corner/press-clippings. The impact (in the form of “clippings”) of all press releases is included in annex 4.3.

1.4.2 Mont-Blanc news

The Mont-Blanc news on the website has been regularly updated with news generated by the project (for example, Mont-Blanc at SC14). They can all be found in the news section of the website http://www.montblanc-project.eu/press-corner/news. As well as being uploaded to the website, the Mont-Blanc news have been disseminated more widely via the newsletter and social media, especially the Mont-Blanc twitter account.

1.5 Outreach and dissemination videos

In order to enhance the project’s online presence and boost social media, the dissemination team has produced a total of 9 short videos. All were uploaded on page http://www.montblanc-project.eu/press-corner/multimedia. From October 2014, the dissemination team has prepared the following ones:

Some short videos were recorded during the SC14, in particular, about the booth set up in order to boost the social media channels. It worked well particularly on Twitter as it reached the HPC community. It is important to highlight that 32,1% are returning visitors. This fact means that we have a community that regularly came back to see the updates about this project and used the website as a reference. This number has been maintained throughout the project thanks to the communication activities such as the content pushed out through the newsletter or the news launched via social media.

1.7 Social media

The Mont-Blanc dissemination team has focused on continuously using the channels to regularly update the followers and create engagement with their community. With the aim of building a community around the project, the dissemination team has been posting regular updates on the project’s dedicated Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn channels. The table below summarizes the activity done throughout the project:

Table 2: Social channel comparison P1 –P4 As shown by table 2, the presence of social media channels has been rising. The dissemination team has continued its efforts to send out messages through these new communication channels. In Facebook, the target was to send out a message nearly twice a week, while in Twitter nearly every day some activity was done (via re-tweets of other accounts or some tweet was sent out). The channel that is most successful is Twitter that has been increasingly used by the academic community in the last years.

1.7.1 Twitter

The Mont-Blanc twitter account has twitted 1738 times and has 809 followers. The number of followers indicates a considerable interest for Mont-Blanc from the community, as well as the industry. Most frequently used hashtags have been: #HPC, #Exascale, #processor, #science, #supercomputer. The twitter account has been added in a total of 51 Twitter lists. This fact represents that more followers are considering Mont-Blanc account as a reference.

1.7.2 Facebook

In Facebook, the dissemination team has got the following development as shown in the figure below:

industry) community around the project. Currently this group counts 68 members. The activity can be summarized in the table below:

In this particular group, additional efforts will be taken as this tool is really effective but it requires the participation of the scientists to come up with a technical discussion.

1.7.4 Results of social media

Figure 8: Sources of social media of the Mont-Blanc website (1 Oct 2014 – 30 Sept 2015)

As in the figure above, Facebook and Twitter are helping to increase visits to the Mont-Blanc website. LinkedIn has helped as well but needs to give an additional push. Facebook and Twitter are in the same place due to the fact that the videos are very popular in Facebook as well as the pictures. LinkedIn and ResearchGate are the next ones in the list. This last one is a particular social network addressed to scientists where a link to the Mont-Blanc website has been included in a technical discussion about ARM in HPC.

1.8 End User Group

The project has identified 20 new candidate companies that could potentially joint the EUG (including Airbus, EDF and Repsol). They were approached formally at the end of June 2015, in conjunction with events and workshops organized by different projects (in order to take advantage of those opportunities and minimize the amount of unneeded communication). A new member Pharmacelera joint the EUG in August 2015 counting now a total of 6 industrial members. They all can be found on page http://www.montblanc-project.eu/industrial-user-group

1.9 Collaboration with other EU projects

The collaboration with the other European Exascale projects started firstly with PRACE, DEEP and CRESTA doing common dissemination activities (joint booths, workshops, flyers, etc.) to strengthen the efforts positioning the European Exascale on an international level. Later the collaboration was extended to other approved projects such as EXA2CT, NUMEXAS and EPIGRAM. Teleconferences every two weeks are organized with them in order to coordinate all activities. Recently, a joint workshop was organized as a satellite event entitled “Enabling Exascale in Europe for Industry” next to the PRACEDays15 event (additional deliverable D0.2 submitted to the EC). Further to the ISC15 booth, the European Exascale projects will organize a joint workshop titled “Is Europe ready for Exascale?”.
