The roll call of prisoners in Nazi camps
Blitzkrieg
Means “lightning war”; Hitler’s attack strategy
Canada
The name given to storage buildings by the Jewish prisoners that worked
in them
Crematorium
Ovens built in concentration camps to burn the dead bodies that the camps
accumulated
Collaboration
The working together of citizens of a country and the people occupying it
Death Marches
Forced marches of large numbers of prisoners where many of them died
brutal deaths
Extermination Camp
Six major camps designed and built for the purpose of killing Jews
Fuhrer
German word for “leader”, that was adopted by Adolf Hitler as his title
Gas Chambers
Large rooms that were sealed off with Jews inside and then filled with
poisonous gas
Gestapo
Secret German police that were ordered to stomp out political
opposition
Ghetto
The parts or areas of a town that Jews were kept in before being sent to a
camp
Holocaust
The systematic capture, and murder of Jewish people by the political group
Nazi’s in WWII
Judenrat
Jewish councils created inside of the ghettos to keep order
Kapo
A prisoner in the camp who takes a role of overseeing duties by other
prisoners
Mein Kampf
Hitler’s autobiography, in which he talks about where he wants to take
Germany in the future
Mizrah
Means sunrise, or east; usually an item of value is put onto a door frame
facing east.
Pogrom
A Government organized attack on a group of people
SA
Terrorist soldiers that helped secure Hitler’s rise to power
Scrip
Paper currency or tokens used to show that the owner was to receive
something
SS
German elite guard, along with Hitler’s personal protection
Swastika
An Ancient symbol used to ward off evil spirits, adopted by the Nazi
group
Tallis
Shawl worn by men during prayer
Warsaw Ghetto
The largest ghetto in Poland, covering over 100 square blocks
Zyklon B
A chemical pesticide used in gas chambers to kill Jews in massive
numbers
