Where are Your Files?
• AISD employees save their work on a server and the files are backed up regularly
–Your files are not private.
–They can be (and are)
viewed by individuals in
the district.
Your files are not on your computer!
Your “My Documents” folderis on the server at the Tech Center.

Hey, those are my files!
• Hmmm… not really– Your files are part
of the public record– Anyone, at
anytime, can demand to see all of the email, photos, and other files on your school computer

AISD’s network of computers: Simplified

AISD1 Server
Log on to the network from home (using Netilla)
Log on from another campus computer
Log on from your own classroom computer
This is why you can access your files from any computer connected to AISD’s network
Your files are located on the AISD server

What about My Desktop?• Things you see on your
monitor are on your “Desktop”
• Files you save to your desktop are saved to the Local Drive (C:) and are not available on other computers because they are not on the server
• This includes your “wallpaper”
Local Drive C:

Why is my computer so slow?• Accessing our files
on the AISD server is like… – trying to inch our
way to the front of a crowded elevator to select our floor.
There’s nothing wrong with the elevator…It’s just overcrowded!
D. Bonacci
What can we do about it?• In response to this
problem, the district purchased new servers and has begun moving employee files to these servers.
• Teachers will have storage size limits – 800MB in the My
Documents folder – 200MB in the email folder

Managing Files in Multiple Locations
• You need to know – Where your files
are located and how to access them
– How to save your files to specific locations
– How to move files

First- a little background
•Basic overview of computers–Operating System–Programs–Files and folders
D. Bonacci
Our school computers use Windows XP Professional Operating System (OS).
The OS is used by the computer to run the system.
It allows you to create folders, move and rename files, etc.

Word to the Wise
–Do not delete files that are needed by the Operating System to run the computer!
If you didn’t create it, you probably shouldn’t delete it!

Programs
• Programs are applications used by the end user (you) to accomplish specific tasks.– Word (Word processing)– Access (Database)– Excel (Calculations/Charts/Graphs)– Outlook (Email)– Internet (Information acquisition)
• Programs are used to create different types of files
D. Bonacci
File Types
• File types can be identified by looking at the extension or the icon the OS assigns to the file. (.zip, .doc, .ppt, .bmp, .htm, .pdf)

My Computer• 3 ½ in. Floppy Drive (A:)
– can be used to save small files (less than 1.4 BM).
• DVD/CD-RW Drive (D:) – can be used to burn CDs
storing files (up to 700MB)
• Removable Disks (F: and G:)– These appear when you
plug in a camera, flash drive, or other portable storage device. (Letter names may vary)
D. Bonacci
Local Disk (C:)• Local Disk (C:) houses your computer’s OS, and your
Program Files (along with several other items)– If your school computer were a “stand alone” computer (like
most home computers), your files would also be stored on Local Disk (C:) in a folder called “Documents and Settings”
– Those files would only be accessible only from that computer (because that’s the physical location where they are stored.)
– And if this Local Disk (C:) were to CRASH you would permanently lose all of your files.

Suggestions
• Save important files to the “My Documents” folder on the server so they will be routinely backed up
• Save other files to your Local Drive (C:) in the folder “Local Storage”
• Go to the Computer 101 section of the Bowie web site for additional help with maintaining your computer
• Call me if you need assistance

You will probably never feel like this about your computer…

But, maybe you can feel like this…

Can You Repeat That?
