The local terrain varies within very short distances, makingcycling in Cyprus both a great workout and a journey of dis-covery. Thanks to the excellent secondary roads windingthrough spectacular local countryside, Cyprus is also greatfor road cycling.

The Cyprus Cycling Federation, a member of theInternational Cycling Union, organises a number of local roadraces, international MTB races and a host of other competi-tions, attracting world class cyclists from all over the world.

International champions and top names from the world ofcycling have all competed and trained in Cyprus, including

Belgium’s Filip Meairhaeghe and Roel Paulisen, Bart Bretjensand Bas Peters of the Netherlands, as well as Austria’sMichael Weiss, Italy’s Massimo de Bertolis, Germany’s KarlPlatt, and Switzerland’s Thomas Frischknecht.

Teams that have chosen Cyprus as a training destinationinclude the Belgian National Team, the British OlympicAssociation, the Netherlands Olympic Committee, and theIrish National Olympic Cycling Team.

LefkosiaThe island’s capital city, Lefkosia (Nicosia) is located at thecentre of the island and is a cosmopolitan mix of officeblocks, pavement cafes, and modern shops. The head-quarters of many of the island’s sports associations arelocated here.

LemesosThe island’s major port, Lemesos (Limassol) successfullycombines its roles as a tourist resort and a modern interna-tional business centre. Many of the island’s best hotels arehere, while local sports and training facilities are numerous.

LarnakaThis popular coastal resort also does double duty as abustling working town. Home to the island’s major interna-tional airport, Larnaka is an effective base for furthertravel around the island.

PafosPafos is a lively place boasting an impressive line up ofluxury hotels, golf courses and natural attractions. It is alsohome to the island’s second international airport.

Troodos MountainsA cool escape from the heat of the summer or a skiingdestination in winter, the Troodos mountains offer tracks,paths and trails for cycling, hiking and running. Athletessometimes use Troodos for altitude training.

Agia Napa / Protaras Agia Napa and Protaras are major holiday destinations withplenty of hotels and recreational facilities along with sportsand fitness training venues.

Banks & Currency:Cyprus currency is the euro, which is divided into 100 cent.Banks accept and exchange all major currencies. Mostrestaurants, major shops, etc. accept credit cards.Public banking hours: Monday-Friday 08:30hrs to 13:30hrsShopping / Business Hours: As an approximate guide, openinghours in Cyprus are 09:00hrs to 18:00hrs, with a one hourlunch break. Water:Cyprus mains tap water is safe to drink. Given the hot climate, it is important not to waste water.

Driving:Driving is on the left. Hire cars are widely available and are easily identified bytheir red number plates featuring a "Z" prefix. Driversunder 25 years of age holding a driving licence for lessthan 3 years at the time of rental, must inform the carrental company so that under-age insurance coverage isprovided.Seat belts must be worn front and rear in cars. Helmets mustbe worn when riding motorcycles.Drinking and driving is punishable by law.
