The truth is, of course, that we celebratethese great events each week in our worship,and hopefully remember them each day in ourlives. The death and resurrection of Jesus arepart of our foundations. The Ascension is partof who we are. Pentecost is the sign that theHoly Spirit is with us all the time—God can bealive in our lives. It’s just good to have specialdays when we particularly focus our eyes onsomething that is special to us. It is importantto ensure that they are not the only days whenthose events are the focus of our hearts andminds.
One thing that these great events (as wellas the great events of Christmas) remind us isthat God got himself and gets himself involvedin our lives. He is not a “God out there” (I’mpointing at the sky at this moment), rather, heis a “God in here” (I’m pointing at my chest atthis moment). These special events remind usthat God chooses to involve himself directly inwhat happens to us. I suppose the greatestremembrance of all is Pentecost—when weremember that the Holy Spirit came on thedisciples of Jesus—and stayed on in the heartsand lives of all God’s people down through theages.
On Easter Sunday I mentioned that I waschatting to a neighbour who felt he had lost hisfaith, and had stopped going to his church. Forhim: “I can’t believe in a divine beinganymore.” Somewhere he had picked up theidea that God is out there, a great being whojuggles the earth and the planets and the sunsand the universe and keeps them going. WhileGod is a “Divine Being,” I had to think—whatis more important for me isn’t the “DivineBeing” who is God, rather that I have acompanion through life who shares life withme, both the good and the bad, the despair andthe hope, the sadness and the joy. I don’t haveto reach out to a “Divine Being out there,” Ican turn to the “Companion Beside Me,” thecompanion who is here involved in my life.

Dear Friends,
A few weeks ago we particularly re-membered that Jesus died on the crossfor us, after walking into Jerusalem,surrounded by crowds of fans and sup-porters. Three days later we celebratedJesus rising from the dead, burstingalive from the tomb. A day or two be-fore this magazine came out, on the 29th
May, we celebrated Jesus ascendingand returning to his Father. In the nextweek or so—the 8th June to be precise—we celebrate the sending of the HolySpirit onto the disciples, and launchingthe church down through the ages, rightdown to us. April, May and June arebusy times in the church calendar.

At St. Cyprian’s. it is good to mark this ina special way—which we will do at Pentecost.We make our main service in the morning ahealing service—a place where we can andwill pray for people who feel they need to havea special encounter with the “God with us.”For some, it may be that we are suffering insome way, physically. For others it can be thatwe are suffering in our minds, or hearts, orsouls. For others, it may be that we aresuffering in our relationships, in our families.It may simply be that we feel heavy-laden—just not as alive as we feel we could be or wantto be. In our service at 10.30am on Pentecost(8th June), there will be the opportunity toreceive special prayer for healing—that Godthrough his Spirit will encounter us in a specialway.
We do this because we believe—God isinvolved with our lives, and God wants to beinvolved in our lives. The promise of that iscertain—it is there in Good Friday, Easter

Inspiration....Festo Kivengere
Sadly, I heard the preacher died of Cancerthree years later in his late 60s. Remarkably, Icame to understand later that he had been afriend of my Brother-in-Law John, when Johnhad been a mission partner in Uganda throughall the time when Idi Amin had been at hisworst until his overthrow in 1979. The man
was called Festo Kivengere, and he was theBishop of Kigali in Uganda.
That evening we had heard a phenomenalsermon. I don’t know how long it had been—perhaps an hour—or what had been thecontent, although I am sure it was about lovebecause he preached about love andforgiveness. But the sermon was the man—simply saying: look and see what God can dowith someone who is open to God.
Two great figures dominate the history ofthe church through that time in Africa. JananiLuwum and Festo Kivengere. Both Ugandan.Both Bishops. Both with great friendship andrespect for each other, but both quite differentin their calling. Janani Luwum was apassionate Christian who was a born leader,and his ministry took him rapidly from ParishPriest, to Principal of a Theological College,To Bishop, to Archbishop of the Churchthroughout the central African Region.
Festo Kivengeri was much more the greatevangelistic preacher—the Billy Graham ofAfrica, the Focus of the Northern UgandanRevival. He embodied the passion andenthusiasm of Christ that he spoke about. Hechanged people’s hearts—or perhaps better tosay he had people wanting the Holy Spirit tochange their hearts. He spoke about Christ, andChrist came alive in peoples’ lives.
On 16th February 1977, The Bishops ofUganda were summoned to a meeting with IdiAmin. Festo Kivengere had already had to fleethe country a few days before. After themeeting all except Janani Luwum wereallowed to leave. Janani Luwum was founddead the next day. Festo Kivengere himselfhad simply driven as far as he could on thenight he escaped, till the petrol ran out, thenwalked all night to freedom in Rwanda.
In 1985, I was Student Vice President atSt. John’s Theological College, Notting-ham, and had to host the guest preacherat our weekly service. It was part of therole. There had been half a dozen of uson the table—including the preacher,and it had been a good, friendly, funny,lively, blokey conversation. The guestpreacher had been a natural part of thegroup—although fair to say his longsideburns were well out of fashion bythen! And I received a warm hug as thePrincipal of the college came to collecthim at the end of the meal to take him towherever he was to stay the night.

After the overthrow of Amin, FestoKivengere returned to Uganda and ministeredthere until his death in 1988.
What was perhaps most remarkable aboutFesto Kivengere is that he never lost that senseof joy and love and forgiveness thatcharacterises the Christian faith, and hispassion to proclaim Jesus Christ. He wrote:“On the cross, Jesus said, ‘Father, forgivethem, because they know not what they do.’As evil as Idi Amin is, how can I do lesstoward him?”
I felt touched by this man on that Thursday
evening in 1985. He was someone who couldreach out to anyone. A final thought?Kivengere was known as a great storytellerand often thrilled his own and other’s childrenwith his storytelling skills. A favorite story ofhis: “One day a little girl sat watching hermother working in the kitchen. She asked hermummy, ‘What does God do all day long?’For a while the mother was stumped, but thenshe said, ‘Darling, I’ll tell you what God doesall day long. He spends his whole day mendingbroken things.’

‘An octogenarian takes a wrylyhumorous look at what it’s like to be
old in an era of the relentlessly new’
David Winter is in his early eighties and aretired Anglican priest. He uses stories fromboth Old and New Testament to explore thebiblical attitude to old age and contrasts thatwith the attitude we find in our own culturewhere youth is everything and old age isgenerally seen in a very negative light. Thelast two chapters look at the ‘final question’ ina way I found very helpful, but having saidthat, this book is mainly about living ratherthan about dying and it is encouraginglypositive about life as we get older.
Perhaps one of the weaknesses is that itdoes not tackle at any great depth, the possiblesuffering and mental decline that many of usfear most. However, there is still plenty ofencouragement to help us face getting olderwith hope, looking out for the gifts that wehave developed with age and experience andthe things we still have to offer even when we
are not as energetic or mobile as we used to be.The style is readable and does not assume thereader has a specific faith although theauthor’s own faith obviously influences hisapproach.
This is a book for anyone who wants tothink about getting older in a constructive wayeven if they are not yet ‘old’ themselves. Ihave a copy which I am willing to lend and itis available to buy online. Please ask me orLes if you would like to borrow the book toread or look before you buy.

Lenzie Branch
The Pilates method was developed in thelate 18th Century by Joseph Pilates, a radicalidea for that time. Classes should be in smallgroups, so allowing the Instructor time tocheck that everyone is working and breathingwith the correct method. Plenty for us all tothink about and perhaps join one of Jane’sclasses.
Sally (right, behind our banner!) andCatherine represented our Branch at theDiocesan Festival Service on 10th May. Thiswas held at St John the Evangelist, Dumfries.They travelled down by train to meet with theother Branches at a service where LynneTemby, our World Wide MU President (left inpicture below) talked about the challenges shehas faced and encouraging us all to stem out ofour comfort zones. She planted a ‘weddingcake tree’ to commemorate her presence at theservice.
At the end of May, the Province held aReaching Out day in Perth. Paul and PatHindle attended along with our DiocesanPresident, Ann Glenesk. It was led by a teamfrom the Faith and Policy Unit at Mary

Our meeting in May was hosted by JaneMeek, who is a Pilates Instructor. Shedescribed in detail how Pilates strength-ens the ‘core’ muscles of the abdomen,so allowing controlled movement ofother parts of the body.

Fundraising on a Massive Scale
11–17 MAY
Our small team here at St Cyprian’s,once again, took part in the massivefundraising effort made by ChristianAid across Scotland to help those inneed around the world.
I would like to add my thanks to those ofthe team at Christian Aid Scotland. Theywrote on their website:
“Whether you helped to organise, orattended, a fundraising event, went door-to-door distributing and collecting our redenvelopes, or put a donation into one of thoseenvelopes, we want to say a big thank you foryour support.
We greatly appreciate the ongoingcommitment to the work of Christian Aidshown by our supporters, which allows us tocontinue our work eradicating the causes ofpoverty around the world.
Once again our hardy band of house-to-house collectors pounded the streets of
Scotland, and we anticipate that they will haveraised around a million pounds by doing so.
This effort, together with collections inchurch, coffee mornings, book sales and otherevents that are often fixtures in the calendar inlocal communities across Scotland, meanswe’re confident that Christian Aid Week 2014will raise over £1.5 million in total inScotland.”
Our team raised over £640 through thedoor to door collection and more than £320 atthe joint churches coffee morning, which wehosted this year.

Recipes
Easy Ginger CakeIngredients:
7 oz self-raising flour7 oz sugar1 tsp ground ginger (although I put intwice as much to give it a real gingerkick)1 tsp bicarbonate of soda2 oz margarine1 egg—beaten2 tbsp golden syrup9 fl oz hot water
1) Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F/gas mk4.Grease and line an 11in x 7in bakingtin (or equivalent) with greaseproofpaper.
2) Mix the flour, sugar, ginger and bicarbtogether in a bowl. Using your fingers,rub in the margarine until the mixtureresembles breadcrumbs. Add thebeaten egg, syrup and hot water andmix well with a wooden spoon.
3) Pour the mixture into the prepared tinand bake in the middle of the oven for35-40 minutes, or until golden brownand the top is springy to the touch.Leave to cool in the tin. Once cool, butinto squares.
Beer BreadBasic recipe:
13 oz self-raising flour3 tablespoons castor (or granulated)sugar12 fl oz beer (of any type)
1) Mix together the flour and sugar. Addthe beer, and mix, at first using awooden spoon, but then your fingers.Pour the sticky mixture into a greased9 x 5in loaf tin.
2) Bake for 55 - 60 minutes at180°C/350°F/gas mk 4.
Using beer (or lager) gives you a fairly savourybread which is nice with, for example, butterand cheese. However, this is a great recipe forexperimenting. Some of the things you mighttry include:
● You could add herbs to the mix (driedor fresh) to make a herb bread.
● 5 minutes before it is cooked, putgrated cheese on the top, to make acheese bread.
● My own favourite: instead of beer,you can use cider to make a sweetfruit bread.
● You could add sultanas or other driedfruit to make a fruit loaf. (My all timefavourite I made with cider and fruit!)
● You could add cheese and chillies tothe initial mix...........
● You could think up all sorts of ideasfor yourself............

While I was poorly, or at least gettingbetter, I tried cooking some cakes. Icame up with two easy recipes whichproduced great food, so thought youmight like them:

Starting at LenzieOld, the walk paused atSt Cyprian’s (above) andthen proceeded on toKirkintilloch where itprocessed up Townhead(left) to join the mainwalk starting at StMary’s.
From St Mary’s,the walk headed toSt Ninian’s, then toSt David’s andfinally to the BaptistChurch where aconcluding servicewas held.
