Today we continue to focus on the task of ensuring that mission and ministry with children and young people is prioritised, performed well and passed on. CYM works with colleges, agencies and churches across the UK to ensure the very best training and support is provided for this vital area. In this prospectus you will find details on the programmes we have for volunteers seeking to strengthen their foundations in children and youth ministry; degree courses for individuals starting their career in youth or children’s work; professional development and postgraduate study for experienced practitioners looking to enhance their skills and understanding.

connected to a professional practice agency where you will have the opportunity to put into practice what you learn, and learn through what you experience in practice. CYM has been a pioneer in this approach to theological education for ministry and mission.

CYM centres and agencies understand what is needed to support this type of learning. In addition to the core teaching staff and administrators who run your courses, CYM draws on the expertise of experienced practitioners as tutors and mentors. Offering flexible study with a range of part-time options, combining theory, theology and hands-on experience, makes our courses popular with learners from diverse backgrounds and Christian traditions. Endorsed by the Education Training Standards Committees for England, Wales and Ireland, the Youth & Community courses offer professionally qualified (JNC) status.

Why study with CYM?

Since 1997 we have trained nearly 2,000 youth and children’s works and have supported work in over 300 churches and organisations.

CYM today has 5 learning centres and 16 Engage Agencies around the UK with over 35 tutors and staff committed to providing higher and further education programmes for children and youth work.

Over 75% of our 2013 degree students have secured an employed position before they finish their final year

and 66% finished CYM with a 2:1 or better.

88% of our 2013 class on the BA said that their

course had prepared them for professional life in their chosen field and

we scored 90% for overall satisfaction on the National

Student Survey for 2013.

In the 2013 NSS we scored 97% for overall academic support from our students studying towards the BA (Hons) in Youth Work and Communities and Practical Theology

Being a student at CYM gave me the space to find out who I was in Christ and how I can serve Him with the skills He has given me. I learnt to be less fearful of being out of my comfort zone and making sure I aim for continually developing professionally – so now I’m starting an MA! Engage: Children’s Ministry is flexible training for those in children’s ministry. It will provide you with the knowledge and skills that you need to be a competent and confident Christian children’s worker within your church or organisation.

ENGAGE: CHILDREN’S MINISTRY OFFERS:

The course awards continuing professional development points for Skills Active Level 3 Playwork skills and is a doorway to further training, including CYM degrees. It is suitable for young leaders, gap-year volunteers and intern.

COURSE STRUCTURE:It is delivered through six units.

Unit 1: Being There The role of a children’s worker and the principles of children’s ministry

THERE ARE 4 TYPES OF LEARNING WITHIN ENGAGE.

For each Unit this will normally be divided across:

• Learning 5 hours contact learning through a training day

• Thinking 10 – 20 hours of private study

• Doing 12+ hours of face to face children’s work

• Talking 3 hours with a mentor

A total of 30 ‘notional’ hours for a single Unit equates to 3 playwork CPD credits. Engage is flexible: learners complete the assessed work for Units in their own time. Support is provided through the handbooks for each unit, an online learning resource community, training days and e-mail support for assessments.

The course can be accessed at different levels. Learners can undertake the fully assessed course; others simply attend the training days.

VALIDATION:

CYM has developed Engage: Children’s Ministry from our experience of training children and family workers over the last four years.

This course builds upon the ‘Core Skills’ and ‘More Core Skills’ framework devised by CGMC as the benchmark for initial training in children’s work and introduces an element of practice based assessment of professional Playwork skills (endorsed with SkillsActive CPD points).

This combination provides a foundation qualification suitable for volunteers and workers and affirms their understanding and skills for work in church and non-church contexts. For those who do not have A-levels, Engage: Children’s Ministry is a suitable access qualification for degree programmes.

It is specifically designed for part-time, volunteer and full-time youth leaders, working with young people from 11 - 19.

PLACEMENTEach learner needs a placement where they can undertake 3-5 hours of youth work a week. This can be voluntary or paid work, but must be supported by a line manager. Engage: Youth Ministry encourages learners to reflect on their practice and uses specific tasks in the course to help helpers develop new skills and introduced new concepts to their work. A mentor helps these learners to reflect on their practice and assignments enable learners to identify and demonstrate their understanding and skills.

• Up to 1 year to complete

VALIDATION:This is a nationally recognised qualification and it is on the Qualification Credit Framework (QCF)

Successful completion of Engage: Youth Ministry leads to a nationally recognised qualification accredited by NOCN (National Open College Network) and a JNC endorsement as a youth support worker. This course has been professionally validated by the Education Training Standards (ETS) Committee of the National Youth Agency (NYA). By selecting a course recognised by the JNC you ensure that the course is fit for purpose. Many employers, both voluntary and community and statutory ask for JNC recognised qualifications.

Enable: Schools work is the UK’s first ever stand-alone qualification for Christian work in Primary, Secondary and Further Education settings. It is about strengthening relationships in schools with accredited training from Edexcel.

In September 2014 we plan to introduce an additional programme of study at Diploma level. This further in-depth programme will be available to those who have already completed the Certificate.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Christian working voluntarily in schools or colleges in the UK, which can include:

• children’s workers

• youth workers

• ministers who visit schools to take assemblies/lessons,

• full time schools workers

• volunteers

COURSE CONTENT

Education and Mission: What is the purpose of education? Does the church have a role to play in helping shape this? What does the mission of God look like in education? Should collective worship have a place in education today? We will explore and allow you to wrestle with the potential conflicts and synergies between the church and education and to develop your own understanding about why you do what you do.

What makes a great schools worker?: We explore the skills and character required of a Christian working in education, developing public speaking skills, relational work and teaching among others. With an opportunity to review and critique a variety of approaches of

Christian schools work, learners will be challenged to discover what is at the heart of what a school expects and needs from them as volunteer workers. Alongside this, some practical tools to help you initiate and maintain positive relationships with children, young people and staff, whether in one to one, group work or other settings.

Strategic schools work: We will explore strategy, vision and how to take a tactical look at the work you are doing in schools. Thinking about key questions such as ‘what are you aiming to achieve?’ and ‘how do you know when you have achieved it?’ as well as ‘how do I make contact with a school to begin offering input?’. Opportunities to draw on the experience of projects and individuals who have been working in education for decades both through the teaching of the course, interviews on the main teaching days and case studies.

Behaviour Management: This is a topic that is in high demand in training for Christian schools work, and with good reason. If you have a good handle on this issue and set up a positive learning environment from the start, the children and young people you are working with a much more likely to have an engaging and positive experience with you. We will provide teaching and interactive

learning about effective behaviour management. We will explore how to create positive learning environments, what affects students’ behaviour and how to cope when it all goes wrong.

Resourcing your work: Developing resources is an important part of working in education. They need to be both inspirational and engaging for students, and also fit in well with the curriculum or themes that are set by the school. In a role where you want to spend most of your time actually engaging with the students and not at your desk writing materials, we teach you skills in developing high quality material for use in curricular and extra-curricular settings. You will have plenty of ideas and ready to use tools to take away with you.

VALIDATION

This course is registered in the QCF (Qualifications and Curriculum Framework) as ‘Voluntary Work in Educational Settings. (Level 3) and accredited from Edexcel, the UK’s largest awarding body. Edexcel is the body that agrees and approves qualifications for those who work in schools across England. As a result, head teachers will be aware of them and recognise your ability to work appropriately and effectively within their school.

Developed in partnership with the Creative Communities Unit at Staffordshire University, the FdA in Community Based Pioneer Ministry offers students the opportunity to gain skills in pioneer ministry in community settings, which will be transferable into a range of contexts.

Students will be based in a range of ministry contexts, predominantly churches and community projects. This award does not form a pathway for ordination training, but is designed for individuals from a variety of backgrounds who wish to explore their vocation, develop their ministry skills and gain a qualification which reflects their practical experience.

WHO IS IT FOR? The FdA in Community Based Pioneer Ministry is ideally suited for those who want to be active in Pioneer Ministry whilst developing the skills and insights that will support this work. Candidates will have experience of mission and ministry in a pioneer setting or related field and will usually be employed or taking internship or voluntary roles in an organisation or church. This fda provides accessible Higher Education whilst working in roles such as:

• A leader (non-ordained) in a church plant or fresh expression of church

• A member of an urban mission team

• A community based evangelist or youth ministry coordinator

WHERE CAN I STUDY? The course will be offered at: CAMBRIDGE CYM

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Fees are £4,950 (FT) per annum subject to inflation, and studied full time will take two years to complete.

Course fees are eligible for student loan funding. Students can also apply for maintenance loans.

WHAT ARE THE ACADEMIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS? Academic entry requirements are 80 UCAS points, an appropriate access qualification or evidence of equivalent prior learning.

EXIT POSSIBILITIES Progression onto a BA (Hons) in Contextual Ministry is available.

STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE: One of the key elements of CYM courses is the focus on learning by doing. Throughout their time on the course, students will work in an appropriate pioneer ministry context, such as a church, Christian community project, church plant, fresh expression, chaplaincy setting, YFC centre or mission agency.

Through this practical experience they will develop their skills and have the opportunity to put into practice all they are learning through their academic work. They will also compile portfolios of their work around five competencies:

Undergraduates cover many core topics including: Understanding Communities and Culture, Learning and Discipleship, Spirituality for Pioneer Ministry, Leading and Managing, and many more.

As well as the Award Leader and Module Tutors, students will be assigned a Personal Tutor, who will be their first point of contact at the Centre. They will also have an experienced pioneer mentor, who will support them during the course and opportunities to visit other pioneering projects and to learn from a range of experienced practitioners.

This degree differs from anything CYM has ever done, in that it is not only for those working with children and young people. This exciting course combines theory, theology and hands-on experience, as well as an additional qualification in play work, to ensure that those working with children and their families are able to do so in a way that encourages holistic development and growth.

WHO IS IT FOR? This unique degree course equips Christian children and family workers to work in church and community settings with children (up to age 13) and their families.

Students need some prior experience of working with children and an ability to engage with the specific needs of children and those that care for them.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? We aim to keep our courses as accessible as possible by opting for the lowest permitted level of tuition fee. Course fees are eligible for student loan funding. Students can also apply for maintenance loans.

For the Academic Year 2013/14 the fee for this course for United Kingdom and European Union students is £5,950.

WHAT ARE THE ACADEMIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS? Applicants must:

• provide three references

• have a current CRB enhanced disclosure or ISA Registration

This unique degree course equips Christian youth workers to work alongside other educational professionals in and with schools and other establishments for young people aged 11 – 25.

WHO IS IT FOR? This exciting course combines theory, theology and hands-on experience to ensure Christian youth workers are able to offer holistic support to young people in the educational system. Students need some prior experience of working with young people and an ability to engage with the specific needs and demands of a school community.




WHAT ARE THE ACADEMIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS? In order for a student to comply with our validation for the School, Youth and Community Work course students need to be doing a minimum of a session a week working in a school context.

This course is a great opportunity to train for Christian youth work. It covers everything that you need, to develop current skills, and to gain new ones. It is challenging at times, but the support that you receive through CYM is unique, and is so different to the normal University experience. WHO IS IT FOR? Those in employment already, but seeking professional accreditation (JNC); those with undergraduate qualifications in theology who wish to enhance their understanding of youth work practice and develop their leadership and management skills.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? The full cost of this award is currently £4,740*. This can be paid by instalments at the start of the course. Registration and payment on an annual basis is possible, so that costs can be spread as follows:

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE AGENCY

The JNC is achieved through a portfolio submission including written reflections and practice observation. This experience will be supported by regular engagement with a tutor.

Students are assigned a qualified and experienced professional practice tutor, who offers ongoing one-to-one support mentoring and supervision for the duration of the JNC component of the course. Regional study days and e-learning opportunities provide further opportunities to interact with peers and tutors. Taught modules are assessed via written assignments.

I found doing my MA with CYM to be hugely beneficial to my professional development as the National Director for YWAM England. The teaching was of a high standard, but I especially found the process of disciplined study amongst the busy-ness of my life to be an oasis. Offering both accredited and non-accredited courses delivered through our network of regional centres our accredited short courses are completed on a part time basis in 4 months. The learning experience will be focused upon discussion and critical debate. These courses have been designed to meet the needs of both workers and volunteers. They focus on practical areas for developing skills and will also help you to critically reflect on the broader environment in which you are operating including the theological, political and cultural context.

STUDENT SERVICES IN FURTHER EDUCATION We oversee the 3 Engage courses - Engage Youth Ministry, Engage Children’s Ministry and Enable Schoolswork. We provide information about applying, registration with national accreditation bodies, access to training days, Resources, such as access to my CYM, folders, course material and development. We also oversee the assessing, validation and certification. We provide training for tutors and assessors and information for a wide range of churches, para church agencies etc about the provision of training.

FINANCIAL SERVICES IN HE AND FE This small team is located in Core Services, Swindon. We run the everyday accounts for CYM along with the control and production of management information. We deal with all finance queries, invoicing, payments and accounting records.

STUDENT SERVICES IN HIGHER EDUCATION We oversee the BA & MA courses taught with CYM. Academic Registry, Admissions, Awards, myCYM and Alumni communication are all carried out at Student Services. We manage the admissions process from UCAS applications through to University

enrolment. Liaising with both our validating Universities is is our aim for student s to have the information need, when they need it. Assessments marks, awards and certificates are all controlled through Student Services as well as the organisation of CYM events and meetings.

Cambridge CYM has a long and fruitful partnership with Ridley Hall Theological College, which also trains Church of England priests. We also have close working relationships with Youth For Christ and Scripture Union.

As a student of Cambridge CYM you will have access to all the facilities that Ridley Hall has tooffer. At Cambridge CYM we see spiritual formation as a fundamental component of Christian professional development. Cambridge CYM provides the space needed to reflect on your own spirituality, as well as providing a place to learn about different approaches to spirituality among children and young people.

CCYM has a developing sense of Art and Theology and how it can be used purposefully in work with children and young people. The Art, Identity and Theology module in the third year of the BA courses is leading the way in enabling CCYM students to engage with this exciting field. Cambridge CYM

CYM Ireland was established in 2008 in response to the expressed need of churches for people trained to minister to young people.

It is a partnership between Belfast Bible College (a multicultural, non-denominational Christian learning community) and Youth Link: NI (a partnership of the four largest Christian denominations in Ireland) which exists to build excellence in youth work in faith based contexts primarily through leadership development.CYMI teaching is based at the BBC campus where students are able to avail of the excellent library resources and participate in many aspects of community life at BBC, including prayer, worship, social activities and meals. There is a professional formation focus at Youth Link’s premises which also provides the largest youth work and ministry library in Ireland.

Students spend a significant proportion of each week working with a professional practice agency and have opportunities during the year to experience alternative approaches to youth work, engage in field trips to youth and community work projects and enjoy retreats with an emphasis on spiritual formation. Graduates have a strong

track record of being able to progress into employment or to further training required for their chosen vocation.

At Midlands CYM there is an emphasis on lifelong learning and formation and we have developed, in consultation with graduates, a philosophy of formation based on the seven strands of academic, spiritual, personal, professional, ministerial, theological, community.

We are committed to the development of the whole person. We offer a retreat on Holy Island to graduates, and have at least two day conferences a year for our wider community of tutors, line managers and graduates. Our ongoing links with YFC mean we also have a mission focus and an expertise in work in schools.We have also developed a link with Faithful Neighbourhood Centre and Dr Andrew Smith in Birmingham and each student participates in a residential exploring work in a multicultural and multi-faith context.

Midlands CYM

At Oxford CYM there is an emphasis on mission, with opportunities to rub shoulders with CMS mission partners from all over the world and with Oxford Youth Works’ team of youth workers working in local schools and the wider community.

CMS regularly have a mission theologian in residence, and offer opportunities for short-term overseas mission trips.Field trips to schools, children’s centres, community work projects and places of worship are included, as well as retreat days. In addition this year we are offering a programme of study skills and key people work skills through regular workshops. We share fantastic modern premises with CMS (Church Mission Society) and Oxford Youth Works on the Oxford ring road, with bus connections to the station.

Oxford is a thriving university town, with opportunities to taste the cuisine of almost every country in the world on the famous multi-cultural Cowley Road. Transport links are good with trains from Paddington, Birmingham and the south coast, and coaches from London every 12 minutes!

CYM’s Engage programme is flexible, practice based, training to enhance the confidence, credibility and creativity of part-time workers, volunteer leaders and gap year students engaged in children and youth work.With two separate programmes for children and youth work Engage provides a curriculum, online learning resources and a framework for professionally assessing practice that can be tailor made to support the training needs of churches and Christian organisations.

Through our Engage Agency scheme, CYM can provide the induction, resources and ongoing

support to enable your church or project to deliver training that is tailor made and meets the needs of your children and youth work leaders. Working with Agencies, CYM provides and ensures quality training materials, enabling Agencies to make the best use of the materials within their context. This partnership approach spreads costs, shares income and works smartly to engage people committed to action with accessible training.

CYM already partners with over a dozen agencies across the country who like us are committed to investing in children and youth work. A CYM Engage Agency can be a church looking to resource other churches in their area; a denominational training course seeking to

provide a nationally recognised qualification, or a Christian organisation seeking to meet the training of gap year volunteers taking a year out to serve in children and /or youth work.

Each year we recruit nearly two hundred volunteers and part-time workers in these agencies and beyond, but that’s not enough! We believe more people should have the opportunity to engage in training to build confidence, enhance credibility and release creativity in children and youth work.
