THE FOOTBALL RAMBLER
Football’s Believe it or not 2: 10 funny and strange football stories
Players invoke card frenzy
Jose Manuel Barro Escandon went a little bit card crazy in a match involving first division teams Recreativo Linense and Saladillo de Algeciras. The match descended into a massive brawl which forced the referee to abandon the game before going into each dressing room and showing nine red cards per team.
A dose of his own medicine
During the 1930 World Cup semifinal between Argentina and the United States, the American trainer sprinted onto the pitch to argue with the referee. In the process he threw his medical bag to the ground, opened a bottle of chloroform and then collapsed to the ground as he’d knocked himself out.
Legendary United fan
Norman Windram, a lifelong Manchester United fan, claimed in 2002 to have been at every Manchester United match at Old Trafford since 1926. He said he watched his first game aged four-years-old and attended over 1,800 home matches in a row making him one of the loyalist supporters the club has ever had.
No jokes allowed
The Chile Under-20 squad were fined in 2002 for laughing. The country’s FA decided to punish the players as someone told a joke which caused the whole squad to fall about laughing. The coach complained as he struggled to regain authority and control after the joke had been told.

Chicken wings for losers
Grimsby Town manager Brian Laws is alleged to have thrown a plate of chicken wings at Ivano Bonetti in 1996 after the team had lost a match. The gaffer was apparently unhappy with Bonetti’s lack of effort throughout the game and hurled the chicken at the player through his frustration.
Blatter knows what’s up
Sepp Blatter, the head of FIFA, didn’t exactly cover himself in glory when he was answering questions about the women’s game in 2004. He suggested a way to make the women’s game more popular would be to bring in more feminine clothing such as much tighter shorts.
Fancy dressed footballer
Newcastle United midfielder Clarence Acuna was pulled over by police after attending the club’s Christmas party in 1999. However, it was a caution with a difference because the Chilean was dressed as Captain Hook as the police asked him various questions related to his driving skills.
“Honey! I’m busy!”
A trainer was sent off in 2005 when he answered his mobile phone in the middle of the pitch. Dave Nicholls was treating a player on the pitch when his phone started to ring in his pocket. Without thinking he naturally answered and an angry referee sent the trainer off which meant he was restricted from the dug out for the rest of the game.
Balotelli can be trusted with kids
Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli stormed into the office of a headmaster in 2011. A young fan asked Balotelli for an autograph at training which prompted the Italian to ask why he wasn’t at school. The fan explained he was being bullied which prompted Balotelli to go to the school with the boy and his mother and demand to see the headmaster to sort the incident out.
Mind your head
Ronnie Simpson of Celtic was hit on the head by a brick as he warmed up for a match against Racing Club of Argentina in 1967. As he went about his pre-match routine, a fan threw the brick in his direction. He was subsequently injured and couldn’t continue which meant he was replaced by reserve player John Fallon.

Riddle Answer - Darkness
COACHES BOX
U14 Youth – Match Report Historic Game, Historic Goal: Co–coach Dave Sayers called it soon after hearing that the U14s had lost their opener v
Glenorchy by 0-7 last week. He predicted that we’d win our next game against our
club’s fiercest rivals, the Kingborough Lions. Dave missed Thursday night’s training
session due to a work trip but on Friday I was able to inform him that his prediction
could well be on the money. At that very same training session something just clicked
into place!! All the things we’ve repeatedly been drumming into the players such as formation, moving
and calling for the ball – well it was as though somebody had flicked a switch. Not that I saw any of it as
the Huonville Soccer Ground was enveloped in a Stygian darkness at the time (unfortunately no-one was
able to flick the light switch). Still, I figured if they could do all this in total blackness they’d surely have
the edge in broad daylight. I mentioned last week that the first ever Sea Dragon Junior matches took
place on 12 April 2008. However, it was not until the 3 May of that same year that the club chalked up its
first ever win as the then U9s defeated Kingborough Lions by 4-2 with Isaac Beecroft (3) and Vincent
Chancellor (1) getting on the score-sheet. On Saturday Isaac and Vincent took the field for the U14s, as
did Jake Buckland, Hugh McGarry, Josh Wilson and Archie Cumper who also took part in our first ever win
all those years ago. However, it wasn’t one of the aforementioned who scored the club’s first ever youth
goal. Ten minutes in and after a cagey opening which we edged narrowly on the strength of a couple of
counter attacks based on quick flowing interchanges, Rowan Shelton won the ball just inside his own half
and as is his wont he made a bee-line in the direction of their goal. Running at break-neck speed and with
team-mates left and right of him he struck terror into the back-peddling Kingborough defense. Rowan
spotted a gap opening up in the home defense akin to when Moses parted the Red Sea way back
sometime in the fourteenth century (give or take a few millennium) and he went through it like a knife
through butter, before slotting past the keeper from twelve yards out. It was only a matter of time before
the floodgates opened and when they did it left our opponents wishing forlornly that Noah had been
around to build them a boat. With Vincent, Isaac, Hugh, Jake, Christian Sayers and Rowan playing flowing
football and combining in their half of the field it was no surprise that both Jake and Christian added to
the score-line before the half was out. It was a surprise that we only got another three in the second half
courtesy of Rowan (again), Isaac (who was breaching their defense at will and on another day might have
grabbed a hat-trick) and Hugh. Our second half keeper Brady Cook only touched the ball once in the half
and that was to collect the ball for a goal kick. Hannah Parish and Jake Ainslie were very solid in the full-
back roles while nothing was getting passed Silas Richter in the center of defense. Josh had his best ever
game in the midfield holding role where he seemed to be constantly in the thick of it while Archie after
coming out of an almost action-less first half in goal made an impressive contribution across three
different positions after half time, particularly in midfield where he was well supported by Arya Clare.
Hard to pick a best on ground this week as there were so many worthy contenders. Dave suggested Hugh
might have just nicked it so we’ll go with that, but it was certainly a close run thing. It’s good to get the
monkey off our back after the previous week’s heavy loss. In this level of competition if you look regularly
at the League Ladders you’ll note that every season at every age group and across all divisions there’s
always a team who gets tailed off at the bottom, losing practically every week. I’m pleased to say that
that team is NOT us!! Roll on Saturday.

Message for All Parents (and Kids): If your child is unable to play for any reason please contact your team coach or reply to Dave Sayers who
will pass message on as if we know in time we may be able to get a player from one of the other teams to
double up and therefore we avoid playing short or having to borrow from the other team. Telephone
numbers/email of team coaches above fixtures, results and scorers – item 9.
7. Canteen roster (Coordinator – Alison Nicholas – contact details below):
We are now calling for volunteers for canteen roster. Please let Alison know when you can
volunteer.
Volunteering for canteen is easy and a great way for soccer parents to catch up with others!
This weekend we have seven home games. If each family (without coaching commitments)
can help out one Saturday during the term the canteen will run at its best (and most profitable).
Instructions for Volunteers:
What to do?
One of the volunteers needs to buy/bring :
-500ml milk
-4 loaves of bread
-dozen free range eggs (to go with our free range bacon!!!)
-sliced onion
Please work out who will do this amongst your group.
Please take along 2 tea towels, and the receipts for the items above so you can get your
money back.
Bacon and sausages are supplied by Alison (thanks to Boks and Nicholas butchery) at
training on Friday or Saturday morning.
If more sausages etc. are required on the day they can be purchased locally in Cygnet.
Please arrive 15mins before first game starts.
When you get there the canteen will be unlocked. All the stock and supplies are in plastic
boxes on the table. Setup; cook bacon first, and eggs to order for the egg and bacon
sangers; cook onion and sausages, serve then clean up and put everything back.
It is always fantastic if there are home-made muffins, scones or biscuits but only bring these if
you want to...
Thanks for your support!

8. Match Reports
Cygnet U/6
It was a tough day for our budding soccer stars, however they seemed to be having a great time
regardless. A sign of great sportsmanship, to loose in such a positive manner. St Aloysius was strong and
fast scoring 7 goals to our 1, although we did stop another 10 or 15 attempts. Fantastic defence from
Archie who also made a couple of nice breaks. Charlie Gorringe played a powerful game foiling many
attempts by the St Aloysius strikers’ he was also heavily marked and was unable to get a run at goals.
Abby was strong in the midfield, able to turn the ball many times and always in the thick of it. Charlie
Hooper showed of some awesome footwork, turning the ball efficiently and sneeking a goal pass the
confused St Aloysius defensive line. Flynn was full of enthusiasm and did some great kicks, a sign of great
things to come. William showed some great foot skills and got right in there amongst it.
Great to see the team playing hard right to the end, good job.
Alby
Cygnet U/6 1 lost to St Aloysius Ref 7 (Charlie Hooper 1)
Cygnet U/7 Green Our 6 goals were not won easily, with Huon Valley putting up great defense and having a few near misses
of their own. Rory scored a beautiful goal, sneaking through the opponents’ forest of feet with very
skillful weaving work. Huon also showed off fancy footwork, the highlight being the “jumping ball”, which
scored lots of laughs and provided a sense of fun to the game. Tommy’s two goals were won through
perseverance, taking the ball most of the length of the field, right into the goals. Harry really got involved
in the action and showed his skill reaches beyond defense, to strategic passing to his teammates. As
usual, Benny showed focus and determination with strong kicks and energy, following through to score
three goals.
Cygnet U/7 Green 6 def Huon Valley 0 (Benny 3, Tommy 2, Rory 1)

The skills we are working on in training are really showing through.
Great ball control dribbling and passing displayed this week, dominated the game.
We had an easy win. well done boys.
Cygnet U/7 White 12 def Southern Christian College 0 (Kes, 2. Floyd, 4. Matthew, 6.)
Cygnet U/8 Green Last season our opposition faced the might of our all boys team. At this time Kingborough Lions Black
had, as we were, been undefeated. We went on and hammered them in each encounter there on.

This year Kingborough Lions Black rocked up to face the even more might of our star studded boys and
girls. Kingborough seemed confident on the coach handshake and mentioned their big victory in the first
game. I was modest and said we did alright.
Kick off saw us a little lacking in energy and the first 5 minutes were a tussle in midfield. Then we
proceeded to completely dominate Kingborough with non stop action, particularly with shots on goal (a
number just off target). Everyone was outstanding yet again, and special mention to our goal keepers
who learned that when your team dominates, there is not much to do. Whilst not our most fluent
performance, we were dominant and ran out 7-0 winners. Kingborough walked away yet again scheming
on how to match the U8 Green Sea Dragons.
Great team performance guys.

Cygnet U/8 White Great team work from our under 8s white team. The relentless attacking of Joshua, Sasha and Griffin
made it impossible for Calvin at times to even catch their breath, and they received great support from
our defensive stars – Otis, Toby and Archie. Archie worked like a pro with his teammate, in Griffin getting
the teams 1st goal. Otis brought out his signature ball, a move that clears the bunch, landing it right up
the other end to safety. Toby was constantly getting amongst the pack and attacking and defending
ferociously. Sophia and Jack did a superb and feisty effort in goals!! They followed and implemented all
direction that were given. Jack, showing fearless defence on one occasion, diving on the ball with much
tenacity.
Well done Team
Cygnet White 4 def Calvin 0 (Josh 1, Griffin 2, Jack 1)
Cygnet U/9 Green
The day’s matches didn’t get off to a good start with a pitch double-booking for the U9 Green and U9
White teams. After some discussion with the dog club, we agreed to set up a makeshift pitch using some
borrowed cones. Further protests from the dog competition resulted in a relocation of the match to
bottom side of Soldiers Memorial for the U9 White match and further attempts to snaffle a free of pitch
proved unsuccessful! In the end all players got a kick around playing 6-a-side without goalies on a ½ size
pitch and U6 pop-up goals! I think the parents were more upset than the kids who all seemed to enjoy
themselves once we got going.
New Town proved to be a worthy opponent (and probably deserved a few more goals then they got given
the amount of shots they had and the small goals). In the end, Cygnet played better and deservedly

notched up three goals from Oscar L, Coby and Leyroy. Leyroy’s deserves a special mention being his first
this season, the first for the Sea Dragons and his first ever in a club match. Nice work mate.
Good play and effort from everyone again this week. Looking forward to getting stuck into it all properly
after the holidays.

The game started late as the pitch that was supposed to be available had been triple booked – a National
Dog Championship and a kick boxing event as well as our soccer match. A temporary pitch was
established on some spare ground and the game got underway. The delay must have really fired up the
kids with Rory, Ned, Saras and Codi being particularly active and Toby having the game of his life being
very active and supportive in play. All the players seemed to gel much better this week and worked
together as a team. Well done to you all, and thanks to Leeroy for filling in due to our slightly depleted
numbers which will be at full strength next term now that the sailing season is over.
Ned had a very successful game with a goal scored on his own and setting up another for Codi to finish
off. Codi scored 5 for the match. The opposing Friends team couldn’t keep up with our girls and boys,
scoring only one goal for the match.
Cygnet Sea Dragons White 6 def Friends 1 (Ned 1, Codi 5)
U/10 Green
There are days where it all falls into place - rock solid defence, ferocious midfield and goal sneaking
forwards. The display today was first rate. An open field, stunning dribbling skills, spectacular crosses,
headed goals and great first touch. Special mention to Luca, Kai & Josh in defence/goals today who
stopped EVERYTHING. Great effort. The boys left everything on the field today and I dont think we could
have done much more.

The team faced up against St. Theresa at the Soldier's Memorial grounds. We fielded a team of only nine
players with Jake once again steeping in for his second match of the day to make up the numbers, and
with no substitutes available it was to be an all-out slugfest to the end for all concerned.
The team started off well with the occasional foray into the forward line, however the opposition had
solid defense so opportunities for shots at goal were restricted. Will it seems has been practicing with
some great tackles put in throughout the game. Isaac and Marley were consistent in pushing the ball

through midfield ever searching for an opportunity to nudge forward. Hamish was a player of all positions
going from defense to attack and back. Sadie and Molly both played well in defense, continually chasing
down the ball and making it difficult for the opposition to get their shots off. Noah too, played well and
showed great courage in playing on when he received a shot to the face that would have floored and
sidelined many others. Toby had a great match in midfield and his fitness showed through towards the
end as he kept on slogging away. And Jake showed great courage in goals and managed to keep the final
score respectable.
It was a long match against a well organized opponent, and without any substitutes the Cygnet team
showed great tenacity in pushing to the end.
Cygnet Sea Dragons White 0 lost to St Thereses 5

The U12's played Taroona today and started well. After spurning some early chances we were unlucky to
find ourselves 1-0 down, although in fairness it was a great strike and Caedence got a hand to it and
almost kept it out. Then, just like last week we missed a decisive penalty that could have levelled the
scores before half time.
Still a pretty even half and we were unfortunate not to have scored from open play going into the break,
the penalty miss aside.
HT 0 - 1
After losing a soft goal in the second half and finding ourselves down 2-0 we were still trying to get our
first goal. Again, it was the dreaded penalty spot that let us down, as we missed yet another chance to
get into the scoring charts and make a proper game of it.
Who would believe we practised penalties this week... Anyhow, despite losing some wind from our sails
after the two penalty misses... we battled on but found ourselves counting our missed chances as
Taroona scored twice in the last twelve minutes.
Good progress from last week, the defence played well and for the most part did a good job of keeping
their shape. Despite the scoreline, there were some great individual performances today. Now we just
need to get that first goal on the board and turn the solo performances into a team.
In summary, I felt we were unlucky today but you have to make your own luck when the chips are down.
Still, not the result we deserved or wanted. We will have to work harder...

Cygnet Sea-Dragon Victory Song
Chorus:
Green is the Colour
Football is the Game
We’re all together
And winning is our aim
So cheer us on
Through the sun and the rain
For Cygnet, Cygnet is our name
Verse 1:
Here by the Huon whether rain or fine
We can shine
All the time
Home or away
Come and see us play
You’re welcome any day.
Repeat Chorus
To Finish:
What do we eat?
Seaweed
How do we eat it?
Raw
