CYFEILLION ARCHIFAU CLWYD - DARLITH
“Rhentu ceiliogod, llestri arian a seddi Eglwys a oedd yn hyrwyddo
statws parch ac awdurdod yng Ngogledd Ddwyrain Cymru, tua 1500-1700
- cipolwg ar Archif Teulu Mostyn”.
Gan Dr. Shaun Evans, BA
(Caerefrog), PhD (Bangor).
Cyfarwyddwr Sefydliad
Ymchwil Ystadau Cymru yn
Mhrifysgol Bangor a Cadei-
rydd Fforwm treftadaeth
Gogledd Dwyrain Cymru
O ddiwedd y cyfnod canoloesol hyd at ddechrau’r
ugeinfed ganrif roedd y rhan fwyaf o dir Gogledd
Ddwyrain Cymru yn eiddo i ystadau megis Y Waun,
Hanmer, Cinmel, Lleweni, Plas-y-Ward, Trefalun ac
Wynnstay.
Tra bu’r ystadau hyn yn weithredol llwyddodd y
mwyafrif o ystadau i gadw casgliadau helaeth o
gofnodion, yn manylu ar y dylanwadau yr oedd
ganddynt o fewn ystod eang o feysydd gwahanol,
megis gwleidyddiaeth, crefydd, rhyfel a diwylliant, yn
ogystal â phensaernïaeth, diwylliant, ffermio a
llenyddiaeth.
Cedwir y mwyafrif o’r casgliadau hyn bellach mewn
archifdai cyhoeddus ac maent yn adnodd gwych ar
gyfer ymchwilio i hanes Cymru. Bydd y ddarlith hon
yn trafod cofnodion o archif Mostyn i arddangos rhai
o’r dulliau mwyaf arloesol i foneddigion Gogledd
Ddwyrain Cymru eu defnyddio i geisio hyrwyddo eu
statws, parch ac awdurdod yn ystod yr 16 ac 17 gan-
rif.

FRIENDS OF THE CLWYD ARCHIVES - LECTURE
“Rent capons, silver plate and church pews promoting status, honour
and authority in North East Wales, c. 1500-1700-some insights from the
Mostyn family Archive”.
by Dr. Shaun Evans, BA
(York), PhD (Aberystwyth).
Director of the Institute for
the Study of Welsh Estates
at Bangor University and
Chair of the North East
Wales Heritage Forum.
From the late medieval period through to the early
part of the twentieth century, estates such as Chirk,
Hanmer, Kinmel, Lleweni, Plas-y-Ward, Trevalyn
and Wynnstay dominated the landscape of North
East Wales.
During the course of their existence most of these
estates built up extensive collections of records,
detailing the immense influences they exerted on
areas ranging from politics, religion, warfare and
industry, through to architecture, culture, farming
and literature.
Most of these collections are now housed in public
archives and provide an outstanding resource for
exploring the history of Wales. This lecture will
draw upon records from the Mostyn archive to
showcase some of the more innovative ways in
which the gentry of North East Wales attempted to
promote their status, honour and authority across
the 16th and 17th century.
