What is CYCLONE?

• The terrifying word ‘Cyclone’ has been derived from the Greek word ‘Cyclos’ meaning coil of a snake.

• Cyclone in meteorology refers to any low pressure area with winds spiraling inwards. Cyclones rotate clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere and anti-clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere.

• Cyclone is the general term for a variety of low pressure system types, such as tropical cyclones, extra tropical cyclones and tornadoes

But the Australian Bureau of Meteorology defines the term to mean a dust devil where “local hot spots can develop on the ground, drawing in cooler air from around them and causing spiraling of the air”.

The American Meteorological Society also agrees on the newer definition of a willy-willy. While the term was previously used to denote a tropical cyclone, it is now commonly used in reference to dust devils.

There is confusion in the definition of a willy-willy. In the United States, the National Weather Service defines a willy-willy as “a tropical cyclone of hurricane strength near Australia”.

in IndiaIndia is highly vulnerable to natural hazards especially earthquakes, floods,

drought, cyclone and landslides. The cyclones that occur between Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn are known as Tropical Cyclones. Indian sub-continent is the worst affected region

of the world, having a coast line of 7516 kms. It  is exposed

to nearly 10% of the world’s Tropical Cyclones. Although cyclones affect the entire coast of India the East Coast is more prone compared to the West Coast.

Analysed data for the period 1980-2000 shows that on an average, annually 370 million people are exposed to cyclones in India and also

nearly 308 cyclones (out of which 103 were severe) affected the East Coast.
