    FEATURES AND BENEFITS

    The SM-Helical Buddybox drive combines the worldfamous SM-CYCLO speed reducer and a single stageparallel shaft helical gearbox in shaft mounted design. Itincorporates the well known shock load characteristics ofthe cycloidal reducer with the adaptability of a shaft

    mounted design.

    The selection of SM-Helical Buddybox combinationis designed to maintain the high overload capacitythroughout the drive for which SM-CYCLO reducershave become famous, so Sumitomo is able to extend thestandard warranty to 24 months continuous operation.

    HIGH EFFICIENCY EVEN AT HIGHRATIOS

    Overall efficiency of the SM-Helical Buddyboxapproaches 95% even at reduction ratios up to 416:1.

    The gearmotor and reducer design illustrated in thisbrochure comprise a standard SM-CYCLO gearmotor orreducer attached to a 3.5:1 (nominal) ratio, shaftmounted, helical speed reducer with hollow bore.

    The SM-Helical Buddybox is secured to the driveshaft using a Taper-Grip bushing locking system.

    EASE OF INSTALLATIONCompare the SM-Helical Buddybox to other shaft

    mount torque drives. The drive is delivered completelyassembled and ready for fitting on the driven shaft.

    NO ON-SITE ASSEMBLYREQUIREDWith other torque arm drives, assembly of the motor,

    motor platform, sheaves, belts, belt guard, bushing andtorque arm is required. With SM-Helical Buddybox thebushing is already in place and only the torque armneeds fitting.

    KEYLESS TAPER-GRIP BUSHINGThe principle of using locked tapers to secure power

    transmission components has been established formany years. Our bushing system is based on the well

    known locking capabilities of conventional taperbushings with one very significant difference: the HelicalBuddybox Taper-Grip bushing has a series of tapersurfaces in the form of a continuous helix. The tapersare machined in the hub and on the bushings in the formof a shallow screw thread, which enables the bushing tobe installed from either end of the output hub, dependentonly on customer choice and convenience. With thebushing assembled into the front face of the gear unit,access to the locking screws is immediate and

    unobstructed. Similarly, if the front face must be clear thenthe bushing can be fitted to the reverse side. The lockingsurface goes completely through the bore.

    ASSEMBLYAfter the bushing is screwed into the hub, the reducer

    can be conveniently positioned on the driven shaft.Locking is effected by sequentially tightening the screws,which draw the bushing axially against the opposingtapers in the hub, thus generating the clamping forcealong the whole length of the bushing in contact with the

    shaft.Units can be easily installed on existing shafts that

    may already include a keyway, even though the key willnot be required.

    The bushing is manufactured from ductile iron whichhas properties similar to steel and has a certain degree ofself lubrication. This alleviates the problem of frettingcorrosion which is the cause of so many problemsassociated with the removal of shaft mount reducers.

    GENERALSelection of the SM-Helical Buddybox should be

    based on actual horsepower and torque requirementsat the output shaft. Unlike some conventional gearreducers, the SM-Helical Buddybox maintains very high

    efficiency over a wide range of ratios. Proper selectionfrequently permits the use of reduced input powerrequirements without sacrificing torque at the outputshaft.

    DRIVE RATINGSStandard SM-Helical Buddybox drives are designed

    and built for long, minimum maintenance, 10 hour dailyservice under conditions of uniform loads (equivalent toAGMA service factor 1.0). When an application involvesmore severe conditions, catalog ratings must be dividedby the proper service factors.

    SERVICE FACTORIn general, gear drives are rated for a specific

    application by the use of service factors. Eachapplication has its own conditions and operatingrequirements. There are three load classifications:uniform, moderate shock, and heavy shock.These are further classified into duration of service perday and the prime mover (see table below).

    Duration of service, frequency and severity of shockmust be determined in order to select the proper SM-Helical Buddybox drive for a specific application. Toassist in the selection process, AGMA has definedstandard service factors. However, the service factors tobe used for the selection of the SM-Helical Buddybox

    differ from the standard service factors of AGMA asshown in the table. The SM-Helical Buddybox reducerservice factors are smaller than those of AGMA becauseAGMA service factors are determined on the basis of thegear strength in conventional worm or helical speedreducers.

    The SM-CYCLO portion of the SM-Helical Buddyboxhas a higher overload capacity than conventionalreducers as a result of a greater number of reductionelements in contact and the high quality material of thecomponents (i.e.: 52100 vacuum degassed steel).

    EXCESSIVE OVERLOADSThe SM-Helical Buddybox speed reducer, when

    used at AGMA Service Factor of 1.0, can withstand a

    momentary peak torque of 200% of rated torque (100%overload). SM-Helical Buddybox speed reducers provide300% momentary intermittent shock load capacity andare warranted for 2 years from date of shipment. Referto our standard terms and conditions for our completewarranty.

    INSTALLATION

    The Helical Buddybox Taper-Grip bushing isdesigned to give an easy on, easy off fit to the shaft forassembly and maintenance while giving a firm grip tothe shaft during operation. The Taper-Grip bushingmay be fitted from either end of the hub; you should

    ensure you have adequate access for correct tighteningof the screws.

    Note: Satisfactory performance depends on properinstallation. Therefore all instructions on this page andin the Helical Buddybox Operation and MaintenanceManual must be followed carefully.

    Fitting the Reducer on the Shaft

    1. Check the size and condition of the shaft to which thereducer will be fitted. Permissible shaft tolerances aregiven in Table 1 below.

    2. Ensure all mating surfaces of the hub, the inside andoutside diameters of the Taper-Grip bushing and theshaft are free from burrs and corrosion. Clean eachsurface with a solvent to remove all traces of greaseand oil.

    3. Lightly oil each screw and insert into the bushingflange; ensure they do not protrude beyond the rearface.

    4. Insert the face keys of the thrust collar into the slotson the hub and centralize. Screw the tapered bushing

    into the hub in a clockwise direction until the flangecontacts the thrust collar.

    5. Unscrew the Taper-Grip bushing until the screws arealigned with the pockets in the face of the thrust

    collar and a gap of 1mm minimum exists between theflange and thrust collar. This may be easier if one ofthe screws is removed and the pocket viewedthrough the threaded hole. Finger tighten all screwsinto the pockets.

    6. Slide the reducer onto the shaft at least as far as thecounter bore in the Taper-Grip bushing. Graduallytighten each screw in a star pattern to the torquelevels shown in Table 2.

    7. Install the torque arm assembly if one is used.

    8. After mounting is complete, the Helical Buddybox canthen be filled with oil. Please follow proper guidelinesfor oil lubrication.

    Oil Replenishment and Change Interval

    a) Maintain proper oil levels at all times.

    b) Check oil quantity every 2500 hours. If the oil iscontaminated, burned or waxed, change the oilimmediately and flush if necessary.

    c) Under normal operating conditions, Sumitomorecommends an oil change every 5000 hours ofoperation. The intervals should not exceed 2 years.

    d) An oil change after the first 500 hours of operation ishighly recommended.

    e) If the unit will be running in a high ambient, highhumidity, or corrosive environment, the lubricant willhave to be changed more frequently. Consult thefactory for recommendations.

    f) The Cyclo portion and helical portion must be filledwith oil separately. Oil does not flow from onesection to the other.
