The Bleeding Obvious - Why?

A major component of the well-documented “taxonomic impediment” is being eliminated. This will help accelerate the glacial pace of documenting the world’s biota. Revisions to taxonomy require reading all prior work.

EOL (and other integrator projects) will have vastly increased source data for species to draw on.

The published record is available and preserved in network space. What is and what is not the “record” is a complex subject in digital network space.

Repatriation of knowledge to high-biodiversity countries.

To digitize and mount works under copyright BHL must obtain permission from the copyright holders.

Many biodiversity journals and monographs are published by non-profit institutions or learned societies whose mission is to promote research and learning.

Some of these institutions have not sold their rights to commercial publishers and are open to sharing with the BHL.

Permissions for > 160 journal titles and growing. A global cooperation to incentivize other national-level

projects to host and preserve the content. A fruitful collaboration with the Internet Archive that has

provide high-quality scanning and free storage infrastructure.
