Leveraging AFNet Innovations to Counter Cyber Threats

Every day, the U.S. Air Force (USAF) faces millions of attacks on its network resources worldwide and the information they contain. What stops them from succeeding? The answer is Air Force Intranet Control (AFINC), the USAF’s next-generation boundary security construct, and the increments that will follow to further strengthen network defenses and resilience at all levels of the USAF.

As the prime contractor for the program, General Dynamics Information Technology partners with the USAF to deliver this major redesign of Air Force unclassified and classified network management and network defense architecture. AFINC establishes a standardized security boundary with the Global Information Grid (GIG). Before, every Air Force base worldwide had its own link to the GIG and the Internet. The upgraded boundary consolidates 104 access points into 16 secure gateways that connect the bases into a standardized, secure Air Force intranet. The gateways are also the primary interface between each base and the Internet.

Increased Security, Greater Control, Enterprise TransparencyWith AFINC, the USAF gains a remarkable range of capabilities that significantly strengthen cyber security, network protection and information assurance (IA). A key enabler of Air Force network operations, AFINC supports powerful new capabilities for integrated network management, configuration control, sustainment and assured continuity of operations (COOP).

Centralized monitoring and management from network and security operations centers (called Integrated Management Suites) provide automated 24/7 situational awareness and control of the Air Force IT enterprise at all levels. Unclassified networks employ common equipment families and management tools, which make operations and sustainment more effective and efficient.

Enabling Proactive SecurityThrough our strengths in network automation, monitoring and integrated management, General Dynamics Information Technology supports the transition from reactive to proactive security techniques. We supplement today’s intrusion detection systems with intrusion prevention capabilities, which proactively monitor networks and enterprises to identify and remediate vulnerabilities.
