Monumental inscriptions relating to burials, 1558-1653

The old church of Banbury,,,as demolished in 1790. In spite of specificlegislation to the contrary virtually all the many monumental inscriptionsinside the church were destroyed. Only four survived to be re-erected in thenew church (in one of the staircase lobbies). These are to John and JoanKnight (1587 and 1590), and William Knight (1631), both quoted below;Margaret wife of Bezaleele Knight, died 1685;..John Baxter, died 1772.

Fortunately some of the monumental inscriptions were copied by Anthonya Wood(1632-1695) and Richard Rawlinson(1690-1755). These are quoted infull in the Oxfordshire RecordSociety edition of their collections (Part One,O.R.S. Vol. 2, 1920), pages 21-30, from which this abstract has been made. They are also quoted in The History of Banbwy, by Alfred Beesley (1841).pages 272 and 492-497.1.
