New Safety Awards Given Operators"THE SAFE DRIVING of oper-

ators like you has given MTA anational reputation," Executive Di-rector C. M. Gilliss told 12 MTAveterans on Dec. 5 as he presentedeach of them a gold safety award pinwith ruby for 15 years of operatingtransit vehicles on the system withoutchargeable accident.

The ceremony signified the rein-statement and consolidation of previ-ous safety award programs that had•een carried on by predecessor com-

‘"7-)anies, according to the Transit Cas-ualty Co.'s safety engineer, J. 1-1.Prutsman, who is in charge of thecurrent program.

"Records indicate that the lastsafety awards were issued late in1957," said Mr. Prutsman. "Sincethe formation of MTA, all operators'records have been evaluated back toJan. 1, 1945.

"From the date he is hired, orfrom Jan. 1, 1945, whichever dateis later, every Operator is in this ton-test. He is entitled to a one-year pinas soon as he completes 12 consecu-tive months of Operation without a

chargeable accident or other awardpenalty. For each consecutive 12-month period of similar operationthereafter, he is entitled to an addi-tional year's award.

"If an operator has a chargeableaccident after winning a pin, his eli-gibility for the next award beginsthe day after the accident."

Specially chosen to represent theirrespective divisions at the openingceremony, the 12 operators who re-ceived their pins from Mr. Gillisswere among 60 who had won 15-yearpins as of last June 30.

General Superintendent of Trans-portation George F. Goehler and Mr.Prutsman later visited the divisionsto present the remaining 15-year pinsas well as the lesser awards won todate.

A similar system of safety awards,based on avoidance of employee in-juries, is being worked out in theMaintenance, Electrical, and Way andStructures departments, according toAssistant General Manager M. EdwinWright.

Division 7, West Hollywood

The considerable expansion inmanpower and facilities at the WestHollywood division in the Aast yearemphasizes its importance in MTAplans. The number of operators hasincreased from 241 to 362 since June19, when Division 4 was closed andits drivers were shifted to Divisions3 and 7, which are now the largestsingle divisions in manpower on thesystem.

The garage, built new only half adozen years ago, has been enlargedso that its pits can accommodate sixinstead of three buses. The storeroom,

A tire room on the north end ofthe lot was opened in October.

Division 1 to Add Buses Next May 1DIVISION 1 will become a com-

bination trolley coach and bus divi-sion about May 1, states AssistantGeneral Manager M. Edwin Wright.

"The relocation of the Electrical,Way and Structures, and MechanicalEngineering department to Macy St.,and the use of the Macy yard to storeequipment and materials now at Ver-non Yard, make it necessary to movethe 120 buses now stored at Macy tonew quarters," Mr. Wright said."Some will be moved to Division 1and some to Division 2."

The opening of the new transpor-tation building at Division 1 in mid-

November was but the first step innew construction at that point. Shownabove in the shaded portions of theplot plan are the garage addition,service station, bus washer, and vac-uum cleaner listed in the last issue ofTHE EMBLEM. Portions of the lot tobe graded and paved are also shown.

Other new features will be newyard lighting, motor-operated doorsat each end of the garage, drivewaysfor buses an both Central and Ala-meda, and five 10,000-gallon tanksfor fuel and oil, Mr. Wright said.The stockroom will also be enlarged.

Mr. Payrowwas selected bya committee of

Monte business leaders not con-nected in any way with MTA. Theydid not know until several days afterthey had selected a letter praising acertain Operator for his courtesy thatthe person was Frank Payrow, becauseall letters in the tontest are retypedin blank from the originals. That is,all references to name, number, andline are eliminated in the retyping.

The winning letter praised theOperator as "always courteous anclip)patient," "a careful and cautious driv-er [who] thinks ahead before plung-ing into traffic," "always cheerful,"and one who "goes out of his way tobe helpful."

A Division 2 operator with morethan 14 years of service, Mr. Payrowlives in Long Beach with his wifeand two children: Diane, 17, a Stu-dent at Long Beach City College; andSteven, 9, a Cub Scout. Both parentsare active in the Cub pack.

The operator's hobby is landscap-ing his home with rocks, cactus, andwagon wheels.

Decision to Purchase 175 New BusesIs Among Recent Authority Actions

THE PURCHASE OF 175 newbuses for delivery in 1961 was ap-proved by the Authority at its Nov.15 meeting.

The Authority approved the re-commendation of its purchasing com-rnittee that 140 of the buses be pur-chased from General Motors and 35from the Flxible Co.

In making the committee's recom-mendation to the Authority, Chair-man Don Belding pointed out:

"The purchase of the 140 GMmotor coaches recommended herewould cost the Authority $177,764more than would 140 coaches offeredby the Flxible Company. However,the stall of MTA reports that thedifference in delivery schedules be-tween the two companies representsa difference in operating and mainten-ance costs of $206,000 in favor ofthe GM delivery. The purchase of the140 GM buses, therefore, representsa net saving to the Authority of$28,000."

General Motors will build 80 busesof the City type and 60 of the inter-urban type. Of the latter, 30 willhave gearshifts, and 30, automatictransmissions.

The 35 from Flxible will be all ofthe City type.

OTHER DECISIONS

At the same meeting, the Authoritydecided to:

1. Rent Part of the Pasadena busstorage building to the Tournamentof Roses Association for the construc-tion and decoration of floats betweenDec. 7 and Jan. 2.

2. Request bids for MTA's Petrol-eum requirements for one year begin-ning Feb. 1, 1961.

3. Authorize relocation of the16,500-volt high line from poles to

underground on Hoover St. between20th and 22nd Sts., where the SantaMonica Freeway is coming through.

4. Authorize construction, for about$7,700, of a radio maintenance shopon the ground floor of the Mainten-ance Department building at Divi-sion 2. This new shop will replacethe existing shop, which is to be torndown.

5. Authorize the $6,000 installa-tion, under the viaduct at Sixth an.Main Sts., of light and power switch-ing facilities to replace some of thoseat the Sixth and Alameda Sts. sub-station, which will be removed. (Seeplan on p. 9).

The new 240-volt light and powerswitch will serve the Los Angeles St.bus terminal, the viaduct (includingrail switching facilities but not trolleypower), the switch tower, and Divi-sion 11 maintenance facilities andstorage yards.

Line Car Operator Retires

A LVIN U. CALVERT, Division12 operator who piloted the line carat night for more than eight year

retired Oct. 131111/after service from1942 with MTAand its predeces-sors.

He spent thefirst 10 years ofhis service work-ing out of theSubway Termin-al on box mo-tors.

His retirementfollowed a year of indefinite sickleave. He and Mrs. Calvert plan totravel when he becomes well enough.

Debra Makes Her Wish

On the Candy Cane Bus

"PLEASE, SANTA, I want a jack-in-the-box and a cash register,” saysDebra Lee James, making her wishas directed by the sign on the CandyCane Bus.

Pretty Debra Lee is the 41/2 -year-old granddaughter of Mechanic Tho-mas G. Smalley, of the South Parklthops, where the bus was painted.

The design for the red and whitestriping was worked out by GeneralForeman A. F. Kilgore. Painting wasby Kenneth Stepp, Joseph Montes,Homer Blue, and Harlan Schumacher,under the supervision of Gus Gun-dersen, body shop foreman.

Sponsored by the Downtown Busi-ness Men's Association, the CandyCane Bus is expected to add zest tothe holiday atmosphere as it travelsin regular service on lines enteringand leaving downtown Los Angeles.
