Feb. 2014 – May 2014 Career Counseling Laboratory at University of Baltimore

I served as a research assistant in Dr. Courtney E. Gasser’s Career Counseling Spring 2014 Laboratory at University of Baltimore. During this time, I assisted with several research projects, including a career adaptability study, a study on supervision of mental health clinicians and a job search groups study. My duties included conducting literature reviews on career counseling survey instruments, administering a career adaptability study to participants, organizing and tracking articles, and searching for contact information for clinician supervisors.

Sep. 2012 – April 2013 “Who Will I Be: The Effect of Identity Salience on Black Women’s Perceptions of Discrimination”

For my senior thesis in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, I chose to examine the effect of identity salience on Black women’s perceptions of discrimination. In doing so, I created and conducted an experiment in which Black and White women were given no prime, a gender prime, or given a gender-ethnicity prime before being asked to imagine a situation in which they were being discriminated against. Data analysis and subsequent interpretation reinforced the Ethnic-Prominence Hypothesis, namely that Black women not given a prime will attribute discrimination to their ethnicity.

Sep. 2011 – April 2012 Junior Independent Work

For my junior research projects in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, I completed several projects including one detailing some proposed reasons for gender differences in depression and another suggesting how Cognitive Developmental Theory, a theory about how children come to understand a gender, can be applied to the formation of racial stereotypes due to parallel developmental patterns. The most extensive of these papers proposes that due to social stress from factors unique to the experience of Black women, Black women are more likely to exhibit higher rates of depression and depressive symptoms.
