Personal Statement

I have always had a love of mathematics; it was always my favourite subject in school and I enjoyed working with figures and solving puzzles. Furthermore, my passion for finance was triggered whilst on a six week summer placement in 2009 working for Grant Thornton in Liverpool. It was a fantastic opportunity as it allowed me to shadow a number of accountants, visit a few of the client sites and carry out some of the audit control testing. It gave me such a great insight into the accounting environment and what the role entails and was an unprecedented experience. This then gave me the drive whilst studying for my degree in Newcastle. It was there that I discovered my preference for management accounting. My preferred modules included such aspects as; cost accounting, budgeting, performance management, decision making and studying the link between human behaviour and the management accounting system. My enthusiasm and inclination towards these modules cemented my decision to carry out my professional examinations with the CIMA route.

As well as the desire and passion for accountancy, I feel I have the personal attributes to be a successful accountant. I am an honest person with a strong sense of integrity. I am also very well organised and I am comfortable working within a highly structured environment with strict rules and regulations. My studies have also allowed me to work on my time management skills, keeping up with deadlines and being able to organise and prioritise. As well as being comfortable with structure, I am always intrigued to learn more with an inquisitive mind and an eye for detail.
