RESEARCH INTERESTS

The taxonomy and classification of bacteria in fish. Disease pathogenesis, pathogen detection, diagnosis and control of bacterial fish diseases in hatcheries. Investigation of the genetic differences between species of bacteria from salmon in different natural reserves. The causes behind differences in prevalence of bacteria in fish in different reserves and years. Study of causes of shell disease in crabs. Analysis of micro flora of salmon spawning reserves.

TECHNICAL AND RELATED SKILLS

Preparation of Media: Create appropriate environments for the growth of microorganisms.

Collecting Samples of hydrobionts (fish, crabs and mussels): Bio-analysis, visual examination for pathology, bacteriological inoculation from organs and injuries.

Collecting Samples of Water: Direct and deep inoculation and filtration.

Isolation and Identification of Microorganisms: Investigation of the morphology, cultural and biochemical properties of bacteria using classic methods and test systems (BioMerieux and Lachema). Identification of the taxonomic position of isolated bacteria and the investigation of their sensitivity to antibiotics.

Experimental Inoculation: Direct inoculation of bacterial pathogens into live fish and subsequent recorded observations.

2011Ustimenko, E. A. & Sergeenko, N. V. Cause of Furunculosis Aeromonas salmonicida in spawning sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka Walbaum) in Azabachye Lake. Fisheries, V.12, 3 (47), 2011, 576-586.The paper described the results of the bacteriological investigation of spawning sockeye salmon from Azabachye lake in 2004-2009. The A. salmonicida that we isolated in Azabachye lake shared some of the peculiarities inherent to the bacteria of this species isolated from fish in reservoirs of the Asian coast of the Pacific Ocean before. However, some of the characteristics of the bacteria we isolated from fish in Azabachye lake were unique to this lake. Pathogenesity of the isolated bacteria A. salmonicidа showed its potential danger for salmon populations.

The comparative analysis of the contamination of Pacific salmon pathogens, their influence on commodity quality and their epidemiological value from research between 1990-2006 was carried out. The kinds of salmon having the greatest epidemiological value for the distribution of anisakiosis and difillobothriosis on Kamchatka peninsula were determined.

2005Sergeenko, N. V. & Ustimenko, E. A. Characterization of strains of Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida isolated from spawning salmon in fish hatcheries on Kamchatka. In: Health and Diseases of Aquatic Organisms: Bilateral Perspectives R.C. Cipriano, I.S. Shchelkunov (Eds.), 2005, 256-259.Incidents of carriers of Aeromonas salmonicida among spawning salmon populations were detected in 2001-2002. Somewhat “atypical” characteristics were similar to reports of atypical strains isolated in Japan. In order to test the pathogenicity of the strain, an isolate from chum salmon was inoculated into fingerlings.

2000Sergeenko, N. V., Ustimenko, E. A. & Pugaeva, V. P. Determination of the pathogenicity of the vibrions, isolated from pink salmon, Oncorhynchus gorbuscha (Walbaum) in Karaginsky gulf (Kamchatka). Investigation of the biological water resources of the Kamchatka and the Northwest part of the Pacific ocean, Kamchatka Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography V22, 2000, 185-187.In 1997-1998 in Karaginsky Bay in the Bearing Sea a highly pathogenic strain of Vibrio anguillarun was isolated from diseased pink salmon. Using the immersion method, it was determined that 76% of the fry died and 80% were infected.
