Laparoscopic surgery (minimal invasive surgery (MIS) or keyhole surgery) is growing rapidly and developing into other innovations, such as robotic surgery and endoscopic reflux surgery. Laparoscopic learning techniques has become very important, with educators needing to integrate virtual reality in laparoscopic training. There is high-grade evidence to suggest that virtual reality simulators can support both training and assessment in laparoscopy. The consultant surgeons and surgical trainees in North Queensland uses the different laparoscopic training video to obtained laparoscopic surgical skills. However, the educational impact of the virtual reality training is not known.

Background To determine the added educational value of a web-based training video (WBTV) for teaching laparoscopic surgery in North Queensland, Australia.

Objectives Results There were 17 respondents

(11.4%) Consultant surgeons (72.2%) and

surgical trainees (22.2%). Majority of participant`s sources

of learning laparoscopic surgery. from supervisors in operating

theatre (64.3%) Online Web-based training

video (7.1%) Using Animal Labs (7.1%) Black Box Trainer(7.1%) WBTV were used mainly when

required for clinical rotation Respondents without

experience in WBTV (86.7%) Have not Learnt Laparoscopic

Surgery ( 14.4 %) satisfaction with current WBTV

resources was found to vary

Awareness of Surgeons and Surgical Trainees of Web-based Techniques for Teaching

Laparoscopic Surgery in North Queensland. .

The Study was a descriptive and exploratory survey of consultant surgeons and surgical trainees at three site in North Queensland. We invited participants to complete 24-item questionnaire on knowledge and attitudes toward different techniques of learning laparoscopic surgery.

Setting & participants

The questionnaires were distributed by emails to the three Government Hospitals. ; Three selected sites: Townsville,

Surgical trainees. Already undertaken training in

basic laparoscopic techniques in years and had used video training

Completed surgical operations up to 60 cases or 100 over two years period

performing various Laparoscopic surgical procedures

Lack of awareness the main reason for not knowing WBTV attributed to the fact that participants have not been exposed to the WBTV technology used in

surgical simulation. Requirement for rotation the mean reason for using WBTV Reasons for Not Using laparoscopic Surgery Web-based Training Video Lack of time Off campus/off site rotations

Summary of Findings

Most surgeons and trainees in Hospitals learnt laparoscopic surgery from the operating theatre. Learning laparoscopic surgery from operating theatre could be demanding because patient safety is compromise. WBTV will hopefully address this gap. However, there is lack of awareness of WBTV. .Majority of Surgeons believe teaching in the OR still is the most valuable tool but are interested in learning with WBTV.

Surgical supervisor in operating theatre a major source for learning laparoscopic surgery.

Teaching of a surgical trainee is time-consuming and costly in the operating room when it involves a procedure, and the time spent in the operating theatre teaching raises enormous and inappropriate costs if it is the only avenue of teaching. Further, operating room acquired surgical skills are of variable effectiveness because of the learning curve. Study Hypothesis: Web-based training video (WBTV) learning is equivalent to conventional teaching (Standard surgical training-SLT) in improving scores in cognitive surgical skills.

Effectiveness of web-based training videos for teaching laparoscopic surgery: systematic literature review.

Search Method: Randomized clinical trials addressing this issue were identified from The Cochrane Library trials register, Medline, Embase, Science Citation Index Expanded, grey literature and reference lists and other databases. Selection criteria: The selection criteria were inclusive of Web-based model randomised clinical trials. Other criteria used were training methods that compared web-based training video versus other forms of training, including standard laparoscopic training (SLT) and supplementary animal models. Clinical trials comparing the different methods of surgical simulations were also included

In general terms, the procedure for an open appendectomy is as follows. 2014; http/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/appendectomy.

WBTV can complement standard surgical training. This model is at least as effective as other methods in complementing standard laparoscopic training. The techniques of teaching laparoscopic surgery need to be assess to know the adaptability and its benefits to various settings

Opinion of Surgeons and Registrars is needed.

.

Teaching of Laparoscopic Surgery

Thirty RCTs with 831 participants were identified and included in this review. The effectiveness of Virtual Reality Simulation (VR) was most studied, seventeen randomised clinical trial VR studies were selected from the Cochrane trial library database. Only one Web-Based Training Video (WBTV) RCT was identified in the Cochrane library trial database.
