WRITE MORE LETTERS TO:YOUR SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVES,

AND POSSIBLY YOUR GOVERNOR(Especially NY Because of the Battleground, Fort, Town and original USS Ticonderoga!)

Edit this letter as you like (instead of saying as a TICONDEROGA sailor you would say:As the parent, relative, friend of a TICONDEROGA sailor) or send it as is.Be sure to insert your personal information, remove these instructions.YOUR NAME ( Change to Black & remove this remark)YOUR ADDRESS ( Change to Black & remove this remark)YOUR CITY STATE ZIP ( Change to Black & remove this remark)

DATE: ( Date you send & remove this remark)

Dear Senator:, Representative:, or Governor: ? ( Replace with name & change to black)

I am writing to ask the Secretary of the Navy, The Honorable Richard Spencer, to approve an eventthat would be unique in Naval History. The first AEGIS ship was the USS TICONDEROGA, CG-47.It had the new AN/SPY Radar. The opportunity now exists to allow another AEGIS ship, this timewith the new AMDR Radar to also be named USS TICONDEROGA. This would be any ship afterDDG-127. This opportunity will probably never be available again. As a relative of aTICONDEROGA sailor (or as a TICONDEROGA sailor) I am deeply desirous of seeing anothership carry that name and for it to have the new AMDR Radar would be doubly rewarding.

I realize that the naming schema for DDGs is not that of battles, but I think an exception could bemade in this case (as was made by Secretary Lehman when he named CG-51 USS THOMAS SGATES). It would be nice if it was homeported in Norfolk, VA as was CG-47 or homeported in SanDiego, CA, the homeport of USS TICONDEROGA, CVA/CVS-14. It would be great to see USSTICONDEROGA sailing with the DDG-106, USS STOCKDALE, as James B Stockdale was XO andCO of VF-51 flying off USS TICONDEROGA, CVA-14 in 1963 and then again in 1964 during theGulf of Tonkin incident and sailing with the DDG-108, Wayne E Meyer as RADM Meyer was theFather of AEGIS and USS TICONDEROGA, CG-47 was the first of those AEGIS ships and withone of the Navy’s newest ships the DDG-116, USS THOMAS J HUDNER, as Thomas J Hudner wasthe XO of VF-53 flying off USS TICONDEROGA, CVA-14 in 1964.

I am sure there are many others in our fine state that have ties to USS TICONDEROGA and wouldalso appreciate anything you could do to help us in this effort to make Naval history.

Thank you for your consideration of this request.

Sincerely,

The Honorable Richard V. SpencerSecretary of the Navy1000 Navy PentagonWashington, D. C. 20350-1000

Dear Mr. Secretary:

Congratulations on becoming the 76th SECNAV. It would be great to see you start your career by making NavalHistory. I am writing to ask you to approve an event that would be unique in Naval History. As you may knowthe first AEGIS ship with the AN/SPY radar was the USS TICONDEROGA, CG-47. The opportunity now existsto allow an AEGIS ship on which the new ADMR radar is installed to also be named USS TICONDEROGA. Thatwould be any ship after DDG-127. This opportunity will probably never be available again. As a TICONDEROGAsailor I am deeply desirous of seeing another ship carry that name and to be one with the new AMDR radar wouldbe doubly rewarding.

I realize that the naming schema for DDGs is not that of battles but I think an exception could be made in this caseso that a little Navy History could be made. The “Naming Schema” was broken by Secretary Lehman when henamed CG-51 Thomas S Gates so there is a precedence for it.

This naming would also be historical in that: The first AEGIS USS TICONDEROGA had the MK 26 Point andShoot Missile Launcher and this one would have the Vertical Launching SystemThe first AEGIS USS TICONDEROGA was built in Pascagoula, MS and this one is also or this one is built in Bath,METhe first AEGIS USS TICONDEROGA was homeported in Norfolk, VA and this one also or this one is homeportedin San Diego, CA, the homeport of USS TICONDEROGA, CVA/CVS-14

It would be great to see USS TICONDEROGA sailing with the DDG-106, USS STOCKDALE, as James B Stockdalewas XO and CO of VF-51 flying off USS TICONDEROGA, CVA-14 in 1963 and then again in 1964 during theGulf of Tonkin incident and sailing with the DDG-108, Wayne E Meyer as RADM Meyer was the Father of AEGISand USS TICONDEROGA, CG-47 was the first of those AEGIS ships and with one of the Navy’s newest ships theDDG-116, USS THOMAS J HUDNER, as Thomas J Hudner was the XO of VF-53 flying off USS TICONDEROGA,CVA-14 in 1964.

As you can see a lot of history can be made by naming another ship USS TICONDEROGA.

Thank you for your consideration of this request. Let’s make history together.

Sincerely

Secretary’s LetterHello Shipmates,Well, a lot has been happening in our family, not the leastbeing a move from Colorado to Texas. I wouldn’t evenmention it, but, since I am Secretary, it will affect any of youthat want to mail something to me.Beginning in February the new mailing address for dues payments, obituaries, stories, articles, personal information changes (address, phone, e-mail, etc.) and donationswill be:

Big T Veterans’ Association (or) USS Ticonderoga Veterans’ AssociationP O Box 3178, Universal City, TX 78148

Holly and I have lived in Colorado most of our lives and we have always loved it.However, some of our most important family members (grandchildren) have “gonesouth” and it is too difficult to be a burden to them from 900 miles away!

The glitch on the last Newsletter address label should be fixed on this one. Yourmembership status or dues paid thru date should again appear right above your nameon the label. If the date is older than today you probably owe some dues (the goodnews is that we have rolled the dues back to $20/year).

We are always looking for interesting “stuff” to put in the newsletter. If you haveTico stories, anecdotes, articles, cartoons, pictures, etc. that you think might beinteresting to the rest of us, send copies to the above address (this is a family newsletterso keep it clean and not too political or angry). You may get published in a futurenewsletter.

Welcome to new members! We want to get to know you and hope we can meetyou at one of our annual reunions. Holly and I are looking forward to May in NewOrleans (especially since it might just be a road trip from our New Texas address). We have always had fun in the “Big Easy”. The Association tries to move the reunionsaround so they will be more convenient to members from various parts of the country. We know they can be expensive so we try to keep costs as low as we can withoutsacrificing quality. However, once you have attended one you may get hooked!I hope you all have a very good 2018.

If the email column on the roster has an N in the field,or if it has changed or if you would like us to have it,please contact me at [email protected]. Thank You.

- Secretary

TREASURERS REPORTAs we wind down 2017 and enter into 2018, the USS Ticonderoga

Veterans Association has remained financially strong. In the last quarter,we have had 11 new members joining our ranks and several current membersbecome “Life Members”. Our association member numbers have remainedrelatively constant with new members signing up while we bear the loss ofsome of our long time existing members. Membership growth is a constant effort within our organization as it isa necessary concern for every member. We all should be reaching out to ourformer shipmates of both Carrier and Cruiser, inviting them to join our organization and possiblyattend annual reunions. In addition to this organization, on Facebook (Social Media), theTiconderoga (Both CV-14 and CG-47) has a website that is separate from our formal organizationthat is great place to reconnect with former shipmates. The Facebook site is “USS TiconderogaCV-CVA-CVS & CG47”. Click on and sign in, post your experiences, and see the Tico experiencesof others. You will like the site. To enhance our membership we are outsourcing a Data Entry effort to digitalize some of ourships records to assist in locating former shipmates. We have reams of shipmate data that needs tobe condensed and digitalized where it can be helpful in finding contact information of our manyshipmates. To help to offset the cost of this outsourcing, donations are requested and should bereferenced as “Data Entry – Shipmate Locator”. Another need that we have in our organization is to also digitalize all of our “Cruise Books”that we make available at each annual reunion. Some of these books go back to 1944 and have beensteadily deteriorating over time. In addition, some of these books were lost and others damageddue to past storms in Florida. Our plan is to have all of these cruise books scanned, digitalized, andmade available at the reunions to be looked at by using “Lap Top” computers. To offset the costof this effort, we will be saving $600-$700 per year in shipping costs that we annually pay. Themain cost of this project is the purchase of 8 Lap Top “Chrome Books” where shipmates at thereunion can drill down on these computers and view their desired cruise book. We are in an era of massive computer fraud and identity theft. During the past 4 years we havebeen publishing our quarterly Financial Statements in the newsletters and on our website. At thetime, we felt that is was important to show our membership the strong financial status of ourorganization, however, it made us vulnerable. This allowed our financial status open to the publicand potential hackers. In order to protect the assets of our organization we will immediatelydiscontinue publishing our financial details. The Treasurer will still have the responsibility todrafting quarterly statements, and submit them, along with bank records, to the President and our3 man Financial Oversight Committee. Our association is currently involved in a search for a new permanent Treasurer. I am currentlyfilling in as Acting Treasurer until a replacement can be found. Please contact Big T President,Steve Codding (309-827-4017) for consideration for this key position in our organization. Lookingforward to seeing you in New Orleans May 17 th thru May 21st.Sincerely,

George Passantino - Acting Treasurer
