To Whom it may concern

My name is Nigel Fisher and I am seeking employment as a Part 1 Architecture Assistant, or Just a normal Architecture Assistant in order to get involved professionally within the field of Architecture and gain experience. I am looking for a practice that can of-fer a range and variety of projects I could experience and contribute too in pursuit of my career goals.

As I previously mentioned I am seeking to gain experience, but as a confident, mature student of 35 years old I believe and hope that I will be able to bring a broad range of experiences to your practice as well as receive. I have worked as a self employed la-bourer (where I was known simply a ‘Y’, on account of constantly asking that question, a result of my inquisitive nature and desire to learn) and eventually took up plastering as a trade.

It was that first experience as a labourer, demolishing cow sheds and helping to build 3 bespoke 3 + 4 bed house’s that has led me to my current position. The sense of pride I feel when-ever I see those house’s is tangible and real. Knowledge of this reward and pur-suit of variety is what has motivated me to become an architect.

I have a desire to continually improve myself by constantly learning new things and putting them into practise. Whilst I feel i have skills that will prove useful, I am still eager to develop and improve on these, hopefully becoming a valued member of your team.

Yours sincerely

About me

I have a passion for the built environment and a de-sire to affect lives by improving the context and envi-ronment those lives happen in.

This passion developed gradually over time, from the initial pride of working as a labourer on a building site and thinking to myself ‘I helped build that’. I then trained as a plasterer and eventually gained a degree from the University of Portsmouth in Architecture as I realized I wanted to be more involved in, and had something to offer, the initial design phase’s.

Whilst studying I greatly enjoyed all aspects of the course, taking a keen interest in sustainability issues and structure. I especially liked receiving new briefs, interrogating them thoroughly, searching for the requirements that could become integral philoso-phies creating a unique design.

I take great pride in what I do and in contributing to a team. I often try to solve problems by turning them into a positive (like using vertical drafts in towers to generate electricity), as I believe this is how the best designers resolve these issues. Whilst I feel I have a lot to offer I wish to continue learning and improving within the field of architecture.

Relevant work experience

Northampton Household waste recycling centres

I have identified this as relevant because whilst work-ing at ‘the tip’ I saw so much potential architectural salvage disposed of that I would like to some day use this environmentally friendly (and cost effective) re-source to its fullest potential.

Whilst studying i was able to participate in the Yele Music Studio design competition run by Ribba and a design charet run by Project Office to design a Tea Room for a local charity, my team place 2nd in this competition

Self employed labourer/plasterer

I started as a Building site labourer with a small construction company building small scale hous-ing developments on brown field sites, I found this very rewarding so decided to progress by learning a trade, plastering. The experience gained in every step of construction from the initial, empty site to com-pletion is something i hope will help as an architect.

In Conclusion

Thank you for taking the time to read my C,V, and consider my application for your vacancy. In addition I would like to add that I have a can do, will do attitude that coupled with a desire to learn and improve myself I believe will help me to continue to develop and move forward, and upward, in life.

I hope to meet with you soon to better demon-strate my passion in person. In person I can per-haps better explain my creative/inventive ability, discussing ideas to push the field of architec-ture forward (I have ideas for integrated tur-bines, vacuum insulation and a master planning concept that I would love to present to you) but I readily concede that can only achieve this dream within the framework of a design team, hopefully yours.

I have included some examples of my hand draw-ing abilities below as i feel this is another skill which I can offer.
