Diet and StressIt is common knowledge that dietary deficiencies can cause stress. A magnesium deficiencyis widely recognised as a source of stress. Thiamine, essential for the function of neural tissuesand important in the gastrointestinal function of monogastric animals is widely used to relievestress in equines. Although it is not clear how they function, certain herbs have been shownto actively reduce stress. Amino acids, particularly l-tryptophan, which have the effect ofprolonging the viability or increasing the production of endorphins, are almost standardcomponents in commercial products. Electrolyte SupplementBecause horses are large animals, they have proportionally more heat producing mass, andless surface area from which to radiate heat. They depend on the cooling power of largequantities of perspiration to maintain safe internal temperatures. Unlike human sweat, equinesweat is hypertonic; it contains higher levels of electrolytes than blood plasma. The loss oflarge quantities of water and electrolytes means that horses require serious attention to theirwater and electrolyte intake to maintain optimum fitness during intensive work.

Why use Electrolytes?Horses lose electrolytes daily through sweat and other excreta. Directions for useOral dosing: Add 200 g of Ostri-Dox to one litre water. Mix well. Dose one ml/kg of body-weight, of the above mixture once per day for 5-7 days.Water application: Add 5 g (one heaped measure (including) to one litre of drinking water for5-7 consecutive days. Medicated water must be freshly prepared every 24 hours. Removeall other sources of water until the medicated water has been consumed. Keep medicatedwater in the shadeFeed Application: Add 25 g (5 heaped measure (including)) to 10kg of feed for 5-7consecutive days.

Directions for useOstrich chicks: Day old – Mix 10 gram of Ostri-Flora in 50ml of water and dose 5ml per chick. On 3rd & 5th days of life – mix 10 g of Ostri-Flora in 1kg of food.Environmental / Nutritional change: Mix 5 gram of Ostri-Flora in 1 litre of drinking water, 2 days beforeand 1 day after period of change for 3 consecutive days.

Antibiotic therapy: Treat with antibiotics in the morning followed byOstri-Flora in the afternoon. Mix 5 gram of Ostri-Flora in 1 litre ofdrinking water for the duration of antibiotic treatment +/- 8 hours afterevery antibiotic treatment.

Severe stress conditions: Mix 10 g of Ostri-florain 1 litre of drinking water for 3 consecutive days.
