ACTUAL  POSITION      November  2010  to  now      Chief   of   the   Section   of   Otorhinolaryngology,  Department   of   Surgery,   School   of   Medicine,  University   of   Cagliari.   The   post   is   hold   at   the   Azienda   Ospedaliero-­‐Universitaria,   P.O.   S  Giovanni  di  Dio,  Via  Ospedale,  54,  09124,  Cagliari,  Italy  (20  dedicated  beds  for  in  patient  and  Day  Surgery,  2  dedicated  theatres,  ENT  on  call  24/24  hrs  )    November  2010  to  now      Director   of   the   School   of   Specialization   in   Otorhinolaryngology,   School   of   Medicine,  University  of  Cagliari,  Italy:  3  Sprs  every  year  for    a  total  of  4  year  as  a  basic  ENT  training.    November  2010  to  now      Associate   Professor   and   the   only   official   teacher   of   otorhinolaryngology   at   the   School   of  Medicine  of  the  University  of  Cagliari.    The  ENT  Section  of  the  Department  of  Surgery  of  the  University  of  Cagliari  has  20  dedicated  ENT  beds,  with  2  dedicated  theatres  and  an  annual  mean  ward  admissions  of  1700  patients;  it  offer  specialistic  care  to  the  majority  of  the  Sardinian  population  and  some  cases    from  the  peninsula,  being   the   regional   reference  center   for   the  diagnosis  and   treatment  of   the  ENT  pathology.  The   ENT   department   is   24/24   hrs   on   call   and   it   is   part   of   the   Italian   NHS,   offering  consultation   for   GPs,   ENT   specialist   on   the   territory   and   the   Accident   and   Emergency  Departments  of  the  San.  Giovanni  di  Dio  Hospital  of  the  Azienda  Ospedaliero-­‐Universitaria  of  Cagliari  and   the  other  Hospitals  of   the  Sardinia   region.  The  on  call   service  cover  adult  and  pediatric   ENT   minor   and   major   pathologies.   Connected   to   the   ENT   structure   is   the  Audiophoniatric  Section.  As   the   Chief   of   the   ENT   structure,   Prof.   Puxeddu   is   always   responsible   for   the   problems  encountered  by  his  ENT  colleagues  and  can  be  contacted  every  moment  in  case  of  complex  cases.    The  Managerial  activity  of  Professor  Puxeddu  include  targeting  the  budget  objectives  yearly  discussed  with  the  Chief  Executive  and  his  staff,  and  the  coordination  of  52  employed  in  the  ENT  structure  including  doctors,  nurses,  audiometrists  and  logopaedics.

PAST  POSITIONS    March  2006  –October  2010    Permanent   Consultant   Otorhinolaryngologist,   Head   and   Neck   Surgeon   at   the   ENT  Department  of  the  Queen  Alexandra  Hospitals  Trust,  Cosham  Portsmouth,  UK.  Honorary  Associate  Professor  at  the  University  of  Cagliari,  Italy    2001-­‐  March  2006    As   Consultant   in   Otolaryngology   (Sub-­‐speciality   Head   &   Neck   Surgery)   and     University  Associate   Professor   with   contemporaneous   medical   assignments   at   the   Section   of  Otorhinolaryngology  of   the  Department  of   Surgical   Sciences   and  Organ   Transplantation  of  the  University  of  Cagliari,  Italy,  Dr.  Roberto  Puxeddu  was  constantly  involved  in  patient  care  in  the  clinic  and  in  the  operating  room.     The  Section  of  Otorhinolaryngology  had  38  beds  with  2  independent  operating  rooms  for   ENT   procedures,   2   for   general   anaesthesia   and   for   local   anaesthesia.   It   had   a   mean  annual  admission  of  1700  in-­‐patients,  and  it  serves  a  great  part  of  the  population  of  Sardinia  as   the   main   referral   centre.   The   Section   of   Otorhinolaryngology   of   the   Department   of  Surgical   Sciences   and  Organ   Transplantation   of   the  University   of   Cagliari,   as   a   part   of   the  Hospital   San  Giovanni   di   Dio   of   the  National   Health   System,   is   on   call   24   hours   a   day   for  regular   proposal   of   admission   from   general   practitioners,   the   ENT   specialists   outside   the  hospital,  and   for  emergencies   from  the  Main  Emergency  Service  of   the  hospital,   for  adults  and   for   children.   In   2003,   20,953   new   patients   were   evaluated   at   the   Section   of  Otorhinolaryngology  of   the  Department  of   Surgical   Sciences   and  Organ   Transplantation  of  the  University  of  Cagliari.     As   the   Director   of   the   Structure   of   Head   and   Neck   Microsurgery   and   Endoscopic  Surgery  within   the   Section   of  Otorhinolaryngology   of   the  Department   of   Surgical   Sciences  and  Organ  Transplantation  of  the  University  of  Cagliari,  Dr.  Puxeddu  was  fully  responsible  for  the  medical   and   surgical  planning  of   the   in-­‐   and  out-­‐patients  affected  by  naso-­‐sinusal   and  laryngeal  pathologies.    The  previous  workload  of  Dr.  Puxeddu  included:    • the   on-­‐call   is   1:3   rota,   and  when   on-­‐call   he   is   the   responsible   doctor   covering   the  Section   including   the   surgical   wards,   with   the   management   of   acute   airway   problems   in  adults  and  children,  main  and  minor  hemorrhagic  problems,  acute  inflammatory  disease  (i.e.  mastoiditis,  complicated  sinusitis,  deep  neck  abscesses)  and  ENT  trauma.    • 38  hr/week  of  medical   activity   as   stated  by   the   Italian  NHS   (Dr.   Puxeddu   collected  more  than  600  hours  extra  of  medical  assistance  within  the  Section,  as  can  be  proved  by  the  Administration;    • 6  operating  sessions  per  week,  excluding  those  performed  for  the  emergencies;

• daily  Head  and  Neck  surgical  activity  (the  Consultant  body  includes  4  Head  and  Neck  Surgeons);   from  September  1991  to  February  2006,  Dr.  Roberto  Puxeddu  performed  more  than  3600  surgical  procedures;    • supervision  of  the  surgical  in-­‐patients;      1994-­‐2001    In   1994,   Dr.   Puxeddu   was   confirmed   to   the   post   of   University   Researcher   with  contemporaneous   medical   assignments   at   the   Section   of   Otorhinolaryngology,  Department  of  Surgical  Sciences  and  Organ  Transplantation  of  the  University  of  Cagliari,  Italy.  He  was   immediately   involved   in   all   the   activities   of   the   Section  with   a  on-­‐call   1:5  rota   and   from   1997,   as   Consultant   in   Otolaryngology   (Sub-­‐speciality   Head   &   Neck  Surgery),  with  an  on-­‐call  of  1:3  rota.  When  on-­‐call  he  was  the  responsible  doctor  covering  the  Section   including  the  surgical  wards.  The  workload  of  Dr.  Puxeddu  was  substantially  similar   to   the   present   appointment   with   a   progressive   increase   in   responsibilities   for  surgical  and  managing  duties.  During  this  period,  Dr.  Puxeddu  consolidated  his  experience  in  the  diagnosis  and  management  of  head  and  neck  cancer  patients.  It  also  allowed  he  to  develop  his  independent  practice.      1991-­‐1994    For  specialist  training,  Dr.  Puxeddu  moved  to  the  Institute  of  Ear,  Nose  and  Throat  Clinic  at  Brescia  University,  which  though  busy  (new  patient  attendance,  45.000/year).  The  Institute  performs  about  2000  major  and  minor  head  and  neck  surgical  procedures  prevalently  in  the  oncologic   field,   with   traditional   as   well   as   endoscopic   laser   and   non-­‐laser   surgery.   This  provided  the  ENT  basic  and  some  of  the  advanced  experience  of  Dr.  Puxeddu.   In  the  same  years,  Dr.  Puxeddu  performed  250  hr/year  of  research  activity  and  scheduled  basic  teaching  at  the  University  of  Cagliari  as  a  non-­‐confirmed  researcher.  He  was  progressively  responsible  for  the  diagnosis  and  management  of  surgical  and  medical  ENT  cases.    SURGICAL  EXPERIENCE    Between  1991  and  February  2006  and   from  November  2010   till   now,  Prof.  Roberto  Puxeddu  progressly  performed    5150  Head  and  Neck  surgical  procedures  as  first,  second  or  supervisor  as  summarized  by  the  Management  of  the  Hospital  San.  Giovanni  di  Dio   in  Cagliari.  From  March  2006   to   January   2013   Professor   Roberto   Puxeddu   performer   1481   Head   and   Neck   surgical  procedures   as   first   surgeon,   second   surgeon   or   supervisor   at   the  Queen   Alexandra   Teaching  Hospital  in  Portsmouth,  UK  for  a  total  of  6631  surgical  procedures.  The   number   does   not   includes   the   procedures   performed   at   the  Ospedale   Brotzu   of   Cagliari  during  a  strict  cooperation  with  the  neurosurgeons  for  the  transnasal  endoscopic  approach  to  the  Sella  and  Clivus.    Mr.  Puxeddu  is  competent  in:    ENT  EMERGENCY  PROCEDURES
