Sourav S Bhowmick is an Associate Professor in the School of Computer Engineering, NanyangTechnological University and the Director of Centre for Advanced Information Systems (CAIS).He is currently Visiting Associate Professor at the Biological Engineering Division, Mas-sachusetts Institute of Technology (MA, USA). He also holds the position of Singapore-MITAlliance (SMA) Fellow in Computation and Systems Biology program (2005–2010). Souravreceived his Ph.D. in computer engineering in 2001. Sourav’s key research contributions are summarized as follows.

• His research team is the first to undertake a systematic study on mining structural evo-lution of tree-structured data. This work received “Best Interdisciplinary Paper Award”in ACM CIKM 2004. Subsequently, they proposed solutions to a series of novel problemsrelated to mining evolution of tree and graph structured data. Some of these works werepublished in ACM WWW 2006 and 2007, ACM SIGKDD 2006, ACM CIKM 2005, 2008,and VLDB 2009.

• His team is the first to build a system called XBlend that blends xml query processingwith visual query formulation to turbo-charge query performance by exploiting the la-tency offered by visual interfaces. The results of this work were published in ICDE 2006,DASFAA 2007, and ICDE 2009.

a member of the editorial boards of several international journals. Sourav has been tutorialspeaker for several international conferences such as ER 2006, APWeb 2008, WAIM 2008, andPAKDD 2009. He has co-authored a book entitled “Web Data Management: A WarehouseApproach” (Springers Verlag, October 2003). Sourav is a member of ACM and an affiliatemember of IEEE.

Key Research Contributions

• Mining Evolution of Tree & Graph-Structured Data (2002 — present): Many real-life data can be represented as tree and graph structured data. Different data mining techniqueshave been recently proposed to mine such complex structured data. Existing techniques focus onsnapshot collection of tree/graph structured data while the data collections keep evolving in realapplications. Our key contribution in this research is a system called treasure-miner for dis-covering novel knowledge from the historical change patterns of tree and graph structured data.To the best of our knowledge, none of the previous works have considered the issue of miningchanges to historical tree/graph structured data (our research results first appeared in ACM CIKM2004). Such mining results can be useful in many applications such as e-commerce, web site main-tenance, web site personalization, effective web advertisement, web event detection, xml indexmaintenance, intelligent xml query processing, xml caching, etc. In this context, we have designedand implemented various novel mining algorithms. Our research results have appeared in premiumconferences/journals such as ACM SIGKDD, ACM WWW, VLDB, ACM CIKM, & DKE. Some ofthese publications received ACM best paper and ACM student travel awards.

• Efficient XPath Processing in Tree-Unaware RDBMS (2005 — 2009) : With the rapidemergence of xml as the de facto standard for exchanging data on the Web, the interest on efficientlyquerying growing xml data sources using existing relational framework has increased. Current ap-proaches for evaluating XPath expressions in rdbms can be arguably categorized into tree-aware andtree-unaware types. In the former approach, the database kernel is invaded to make it understandtree-shaped data. In the latter, the kernel is not modified primarily due to benefits with respect toportability and ease of implementation on top of off-the-shelf rdbms. The research community hasshown that tree-aware approaches are more scalable and perform orders of magnitude faster thansome tree-unaware approaches. Our key contribution in this domain is our novel schema-oblivioustree-unaware system called xcalibur that we have been developing since 2005. The xcalibur

project is an exploration of how far we can push the idea of using mature tree-unaware rdbms

technology to design and build a full-fledged XPath processor. To the best of our knowledge, weare the first to show that, contrary to popular belief, it is indeed possible for schema-oblivious tree-unaware strategy to outperform state-of-the-art schema-conscious tree-unaware approaches (such asShared Inlining), commercial XPath support in rdbms (such as MS SQL 2005), and several nativetree-aware approaches (such as TJFast). For the first time, we also show that the performance gapbetween tree-unaware and tree-aware approach like MonetDB/XQuery can be significantly reducedand even outperformed in certain cases. Our research results are published in DASFAA and ACMCIKM.

• Scalable XML Change Detection (2002 — 2006): Since online information changes fre-quently, being able to quickly detect the changes in xml documents is important to many ap-plications. Our study showed that existing main-memory algorithms for xml change detectionsuffer from the scalability problem as they fail to detect changes to large xml documents due tolack of memory. Our novel contribution is that we develop a xml change detection system calledxanadue, to address the scalability issue by detecting changes using the relational database sys-tem. The xanadue project is an investigation of how far we can push the idea of using maturerdbms technology to design and build a full-fledged xml change management system, without

invading the database kernel to make it tree aware. To the best of our knowledge, xanadue isthe first system to detect changes to xml data using relational backends (Our research results firstappeared in DEXA 2004). Our results show that xanadue is orders of magnitude faster and morescalable than the main memory-based approaches for larger xml documents. More importantly, ourapproach has much superior result quality than the main memory-based approaches. Our researchresults appeared in premium conferences such as ACM SIGMOD, ACM CIKM, DKE, & ER. Oneof our publication received ACM student travel award.

• Warehousing the Web (1998 — 2001): How does anyone find and manage relevant informationamong the millions of pages linked together in unpredictable tangles on the Internet? What makesthe Web so exciting is its potential to transcend geography to bring information on myriad topicsdirectly to the desktop. Yet without any consistent How does one locate and retrieve desired infor-mation easily and quickly in this huge information repository? This research address the problem ofefficient management of historical Web information from the database perspective. We investigateissues in the construction of a Web data warehouse called whoweda that materializes and managesuseful information from the Web in order to support strategic decision making. Managing data ina Web warehouse requires us to develop a suitable data model and a set of operators to manipulatedata components in the model, and to look into efficient storage structures and indexing mecha-nisms for Web data. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematic effort for building aweb warehouse (our first research results appeared in IEEE ADL 1998). The results related to thisresearch are published in several international conferences and journals including DEXA, ICDCS,DASFAA, ER, DKE & TKDE.
