Research Interests

Biological oceanography with emphasis on primary production as a function of nutrient supply, light and variations in marine climate. Pioneered integration of marine laboratory and field investigations in Norway, including studies of chemical composition of phytoplankton using unialgal cultures. Also specialised in the photobiology and bio-optics of marine phytoplankton, with emphasis on photo-acclimation and P vs E curves. The field activity has, besides local waters been concentrated on the ecology of the Barents Sea and the Southern Ocean.

Forskningsprofil

Comments re 2C-8C:

2C: Pp. 5-31, 185-188, and 209-232 have been written by myself. This includes the chapters: "Resources of the sea", "What is oceanography?", "Costs and personnel in Norwegian oceanographical research, 1963-1972", and "A review of the history of Norwegian oceanograp-hical research up to the second world war"; the latter was written in cooperation with Professor H. Mosby, University of Bergen. The final version was approved by the Norwegian Oceanographical Committee

3C: The first 63 pages were written by myself. The final version was approved by The Norwegian Oceanographical Committee

4C: Introductory parts and parts covering pelagic research were written by myself. The document was extended with a chapter covering questions related to oil pollution and approved by the two research councils in question and the Ministry of the Environment in May 1983

7C: This book in Norwegian has been edited and in part written by the editorial committee on basis of input from participants in Pro Mare. For resons mainly of style the final versions of the chapters were in the main written by me. This book is the final report from Pro Mare to Norwegian fisheries and environmental managements as well as stafthe research councils. It also is used by ocean- and fisheries-relevant organizations and as a textbook for students (universities, district colleges etc). 2500 copies were printed; 2000 more were printed in spring 1994.

8C: This book has been written/edited on basis of inputs from NTNU researchers and colleagues at other research institutions in Trondheim. It was presented as a millenium gift from the Museum to the people of the Trondheimsfjord rregion.
