I currently serve as the editor in chief of Harvard Health Publications, the publishing division of Harvard Medical School. The mission of Harvard Health Publications is to bring the highest quality health information to the general public in digital, multimedia, and print formats. Prior to assuming my current position, I served as Executive Editor of the New England Journal of Medicine, providing oversight for the activities of the editorial office. I had major editorial responsibilities for the Perspective section of the Journal as well as the cardiovascular research articles. In my role I interacted on a daily basis with medical scholars around the world in order to solicit their research for publication in the Journal, as well as conducting the review and editorial procedures for articles published in the Journal. I also served as an ambassador for the Journal and travel to meetings around the U.S. and throughout the world to promote the Journal’s editorial mission. In 2013-14, I took the lead on a collaborative publishing project in conjunction with Harvard Business Review on high-value health care. The New England Journal of Medicine, which has an impact factor over 50, is published weekly, in print and online, and reaches millions of readers throughout the world. During the past five years I have directed my teaching responsibilities primarily to didactic teaching in health policy, health law, and medical journalism. I have an appointment on the affiliated faculty of the Department of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School, and for the past five years I have served as a tutor for first-year students in their required one-month course in health policy. I also consult with and advise faculty colleagues within the Department of Health Care Policy and the Department of Medicine about the publication of their research. I also have an appointment on the affiliated faculty of the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Harvard Law School. I frequently (two or more times per month) participate in seminars, symposiums, and other teaching activities of the Center. I participate in the teaching of medical students and residents in two courses in medical journalism offered by the editors of the New England Journal of Medicine. These courses, which take place at the Journal’s editorial office, consist of didactic lectures, individual meetings with students, and written assignments. A majority of my scholarly writing in the past 10 years has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine and consists of more than 70 Perspective articles and editorials on a variety of topics in health policy, health law, and the safety and regulation of drugs and medical devices. I have also written articles for Health Affairs and the Petrie-Flom Center Blog (Bill of Health). As a complement to my scholarly writing, I have also written amicus briefs for U.S. Supreme Court cases in the area of health law, and I have given oral and written testimony on the regulation of drugs and medical devices to the U.S. House of Representatives (committee and subcommittee testimony) and to the U.S. Senate (committee testimony).
