SUMMARY OF RESEARCH INTERESTS
Inter-disciplinary including the physiology, behaviour, ecology and conservation of southern
African terrestrial vertebrates. Particular aspects relate to:
Ecosystem health in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, South Africa, including
conservation, general biology, effect of changing land use (including urban ecology)
and climate change on fish, herps, birds, and mammals. Species studied include: Cape
Parrots, bushbuck, oribi, pelicans, Nile crocodiles, fruit bats, raptors, Cape vultures,
small carnivores and feral cats.
Ecophysiology-Vertebrate response to food availability in unpredictable
environments- implications for their ecophysiology and conservation. Energy and
water turnover of nectarivores, herbivores and frugivores. Digestive constraints. Diet
switching. Nutritional and physiological effects of secondary compounds. Thermal
physiology.
Science education-Problems experienced Life Science students. Development of
appropriate teaching strategies to address these. Scientific Method. Human capacity
development.

Organiser of the annual Cape Parrot Big Birding Day
This day is organised by myself and students to monitor Cape Parrots from KZN to the
Eastern Cape and involves birders, conservation bodies, conservancies, land-owners and other
interested people. I am involved in the co-ordination and synthesis of results of data collected
during this day-long monitoring of Cape Parrots by groups of birders. This is the 21st year of
the event. It is now run under the auspices of the Cape Parrot Working Group of which I am
an executive member (currently chair) and responsible for the portfolio of research.
OTHER UNIVERSITY ACTIVITIES
Teaching
I am a member of the School of Life Sciences, UKZN, Pietermaritzburg campus. In addition
to my teaching, I was Class Officer for the Science Foundation Programme (SFP) Biology
from 1994-2001, and co-ordinator of the Bioscience first year classes (1994-2000). I was
module co-ordinator for Bioscience 102 (2003-2004), Biology 104 then Biology 108 (2005-
to 2008), Biology 101 (2007), and Biology 200 (2010). I co-ordinated and taught Biology 222
(2006, 2010- 2015), and Biology 390 (2007-2016). My main teaching in my earlier years
focussed on SFP Biology and first years, but since I have taught more 2nd year courses
(Vertebrate Biology, and Animal Physiology), 3rd year Biol 300 and 390 courses, and
49
Honours (vertebrate Biology). I co-ordinate and teach a vertebrate Honours module and
supervise Honours projects. I have been responsible for organising the student demonstrators
for practicals in the school as well as their remuneration. I was part of the School Publicity
team. I assist in organising Open Day exhibitions, and student attendance at conferences, and
submitting reports about Zoology UKZN to the Zoological Society of Southern Africa.
Internship and Mentor programmes UKZN Pietermaritzburg
I have supervised and involved Black internship and other undergraduate students from 1995-
to the present in my research. There are usually 2-6 students per year. They spend their spare
time during the term and vacations assisting me with my research. I managed to get funding
from DEA for an apprenticeship programme for undergraduate Biology students. This has
resulted in students (10-12) working at various institutions during vacations under my
management. Many of these students have continued with postgraduate studies. Most of these
students valued not only the work experience but also the economic benefits.
Acknowledgements
I am indebted to my husband James Wood, our two daughters Tori and Emmi, my students,
colleagues at UKZN as well as colleagues in other tertiary institutions and non-government
organisations, and funders for their support and encouragement over the years.
