Curriculum Vitae How do a résumé and curriculum vitae differ? Primarily it comes down to use, format, and length. USE A curriculum vitae, or CV, is a type of résumé generally used by professionals in academia or science. Some graduate schools ask for a CV rather than a résumé. They focus on professional, academic, and research accomplishments. FORMAT There is no set format for a CV. It is always best to check with an advisor to see if there is a particular way that is more pleasing to professionals in your field. However there are a few pointers that apply across the board: A CV does not have a title stating ‘Curriculum Vitae’, just as a résumé does not have a glaring ‘Résumé’ emblazoned across the masthead. Objectives or profiles are not used on a CV. Make sure you stick with the facts. A CV is not the place to pat yourself on the back and wax eloquent on how wonderful you are. Education is always listed first. Be sure to include master’s thesis, dissertation title, and professional licenses or certifications. INCLUDE: Teaching experience, including classes taught Research experience which could include papers presented, or any publications Related experience which could include internships, practicums, and fieldwork Honors, awards, grants, scholarships, or fellowships Affiliations and memberships LENGTH Résumés are limited to one, possibly two pages. USE

A curriculum vitae, or CV, is a type of résumé generally used by professionals in academia or science. Some graduate schools ask for a CV rather than a résumé. They focus on professional, academic, and research accomplishments.

FORMAT

There is no set format for a CV. It is always best to check with an advisor to see if there is a particular way that is more pleasing to professionals in your field. However there are a few pointers that apply across the board:

A CV does not have a title stating ‘Curriculum Vitae’, just as a résumé does not have a glaring ‘Résumé’ emblazoned across the masthead.

INCLUDE:

Teaching experience, including classes taught

Research experience which could include papers presented, or any publications

Related experience which could include internships, practicums, and fieldwork

Honors, awards, grants, scholarships, or fellowships

Affiliations and memberships

LENGTH

Résumés are limited to one, possibly two pages. But a CV can go on for many pages, as long as it is well organized and concise. Hansen, Randall S. “Preparing a Curriculum Vitae (CV).” Quintessential Careers. February 2009. http://www.quintcareers.com/curriculum_vitae.html
