Biographical summary of research career Alfred Muller started his research career in 2001 and developed a keen interest in crystallography, primarily focusing organnometallic compounds with applications in catalysis and pharmaceutical application. Most of his training in the area was under the guidance of Andre Roodt (University of the Free State) and Åke Oskarsson (Lund University). He completed his Phd in 2004 at the University of Johannesburg and then accepted a position as post-doctoral fellow to start a single crystal X-ray facility at the University of the Free State. During his stay approx. 300 data collection were conducted, most of the data from this refined and interpreted by him. He also contributed to the finalization of several research articles from this work, and still continue to do so. In 2007 he was appointed as senior lecturer to educate first years and develop a crystallography course for honors level students. In 2008 he accepted a position at the University of Johannesburg where he also managed a similar X-ray diffraction facility, and with additional lecturing duties in the area of inorganic chemistry. He also continues to contribute to all fields of chemistry where crystallography plays a vital rule in the understanding of various systems. In 2009 he obtained an Y2 rating as young scientist with the National Research Foundation. Together with his interest for crystallography he also developed an interest for computational chemistry, which supplemented his findings from crystallography very well. Highlights from this include the cluster he build for the department from scratch with decommissioned computers received from UJ, and the research visit to TU/e in the Netherlands where he contributed in the research for computing catalytic systems for CO oxidation. The combination of the two skills resulted in several papers illustrating the complementarity thereof. Additionally an interest for high-resolution crystallography (also known as charge-density analysis) developed, resulting in a cum laude MSc study. The above field is a research area not fully active in South Africa, despite a large international community. Alfred Muller also served on various committees, e.g. the organizing committee of the Rhemantec international symposium. Currently he is chair of the coordination committee of the SACI (Gauteng region) since 2011. He is also occasionally an invited reviewer for Acta Crystallographica Sections B and E. He is actively training students, not only at post-graduate level, but also at undergraduate level, where he is exposing these students to mini-research projects that prepares them for M and D levels. Since 2012 his research team shifted its focus towards developing new Lanthanide compounds for application in catalysis, luminescence (with application in the pharmaceutical field), magnetism and separation of these rare earth elements. Several collaborations were also initiated with the National Energy Corporation of South Africa (Necsa) who is the major role player in this area. Together with the physics department this brought about a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop research with Necsa. To date Alfred authored/co-authored 110+ articles, 95+% of these in international recognized journals. Most of these outputs have also been presented either by him, collaborators, or students at national and international level. In 2012 he was also have been awarded the prize for highest research outputs in 2011 in UJ’s science faculty at senior lecturer level.
