3. Research Activities

The pre-colonial and colonial-period archaeology of the Red House site in Port of Spain,

Trinidad. I plan to either author or co-author journal articles or books (on a variety of

topics) relating to the site.

Farming at the pre-colonial site at St. John in southwestern Trinidad. I am in the process

of sending grindstones to the Smithsonian Institution in Panama for starch grain and

phytolith analyses. I plan to write a monograph on my research results and have the

13

results included in a book that I plan to write on new discoveries and emerging research

issues in Caribbean archaeology.

Time conception and time reckoning in the Caribbean from 5000 BC to the 21st century. I

was given sabbatical leave in 2010/2011 specifically to undertake this research activity. I

have done thorough literature review of the topic and collated a considerable amount of

information. I plan to write a book on my research findings.

I am producing a volume dedicated to the work of Mr. George Anthony Aarons (1953-

2010), Jamaica’s first archaeologist. The volume will be comprised of chapters written by

contributors who either worked with Mr. Aarons or who are familiar with his work in

Jamaica and the Bahamas.

I was engaged in the Trinidad Railways project (1876-1968) in 2008

http://www.news.gov.tt/archive/index.php?news=820&print. Research was conducted in

tandem with Dr. Bheshem Ramlal of the Faculty of Engineering at U.W.I., St. Augustine

and Mr. Shane Pantin, a postgraduate student in the Department of History at U.W.I., St.

Augustine. Based on oral interviews of individuals who were either employed by or were

commuters on the Trinidad railways, the project was designed to explore the archaeology and

cultural /social history of railways in Trinidad. The documentary/archival data and oral

interviews are currently stored on an external drive at U.W.I., St. Augustine and will eventally be

utilised for a holistic publilcation on Trinidad Railways in 2017/2018.
