Innovative Use of Technology:

PALOS, Purdue University, HEC Grant (1989 to 1993) Coordinator for IUPUI site. PALOS is an interactive video/computer program designed to present

lessons on basic mathematics skills to under-prepared students. The program was integrated into the MATH M010 course. Project director: Dennis Sorge.

Annenberg/CPB Grant (Taught mathematics on educational TV network) Hosted and developed a series on Finite Mathematics through a grant, the New Pathways

Initiative, supporting the development of distance-learning opportunities at IUPUI. The grant funded the development of the series for public broadcasting. The broadcast of the series also act as a resource supplement to the traditional course.

NSF Grant (1992 to 1996) Software for Active Learning in Mathematics and Teacher Preparation. This grant funded the

development of the SEEN-Math software for Finite Mathematics and implement problem solving, collaborative learning, and new technology into the curriculum of a commuter based campus. (Helen Schwartz, Co-PI).

Other School’s Faculty Mentoring Report by Graduating Seniors (non-science majors):

Identified by 5 students graduating from Liberal Arts as, “this professor has influenced the whole course of my life and this teacher’s effect on me is invaluable.”

(2000, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2009). Identified by 17 students graduating from Liberal Arts as a professor at IUPUI outside of the

School of Liberal Arts who had a positive and remarkable influence. Student Support and Advising Services:

Primary responsibility for: math placement testing of non-mathematics majors (1988 – Pr) advising all undergraduate math majors (1990 – Pr) advising graduate students in mathematics education (1990 – Pr) Peer Mentor Program in Finite Mathematics (1992 – 2003) In collaboration with the Peer Mentoring Center, Finite Mathematics was the first course

at IUPUI to experiment with peer mentoring. Created the School of Science Student Career Services Office (2011) As Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Outreach and with startup funding from an

NSF grant, created the career center and hired a director for the career center for the School of Science, with three staff members. The center provides a range of services primarily for undergraduate science students requiring assistance in finding internships, career exploration, resume writing, and job placement services.

Graduate Student Support: MATH 495: Mathematics Teaching Seminar for Graduate Students (1998) Created a required course for graduate students within the department for teaching

mathematics. Since many of our graduate students have had little or no teaching experience and some are not familiar with American educational practice, this course provides information on how to get the course started, solve classroom problems that arise during teaching, implement grading and evaluation techniques, and perform peer evaluation of other graduate students (successful veterans).

Masters of Science Mathematics Teaching Option Redesigned the dormant Masters of Art in Mathematics Teaching (MAT degree) into a

M.S. degree that meets the new State of Indiana requirements for continuing education for in-service secondary mathematics teachers.

Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellows at IUPUI Designed a two-year plan of study for graduate students seeking secondary certification

to teach high school and middle school mathematics, and responsible for advising the Woodrow Wilson Fellows in the mathematics option.
