“Effects on Hearing Status on Adult Speech Production”

The major goal of this project is to better understand the role that hearing plays in adult speech

motor control by using a variety of listener groups, such as cochlear implant recipients, hearing aid

users, persons who are pre-lingually deafened, elderly subjects, and normal-hearing young adults

“Constraints and Strategies in Speech Production”

The major goal of this project is to study the motor control of speech with respect to its variability,

efficiency, and communicative effectiveness. The research is designed to further develop and to test

a theoretical framework that provides a synthesis of biomechanical constraints with economy of

effort and perceptual strategies.

Classroom Credits and revised BU Schedule: There has been concern about classroom inventory and

scheduling efficiency for many years. This topic has been studied by a number of groups and outside

consultants. New room scheduling software, 25Live, has been implemented to make scheduling

increasingly more efficient and effective. I collaborated with Sharon Sankey to provide draft

schedules to the program directors for spring and fall 2017. We also assisted with solving conflicts

across programs and general guidance. Simultaneously, we also made changes to comply with

contact hours and credit assignment guidelines that were developed at BU. This work was completed

in collaboration with the Sargent Undergraduate Education Committee and the Graduate Education

Committee as well as the program directors. (Work began in 2014; review and updates are ongoing)

General Education: In addition to providing feedback on early discussions of the BU-Hub, my role has

been to work on the implementation for undergraduate programs at Sargent College with the goal to

“ensure clear and meaningful articulation of areas and pathways in the BU with school/college and

major requirements” for the following major areas:

1. Philosophical, Aesthetic, and Historical Interpretation

2. Scientific and Social Inquiry

3. Quantitative Reasoning

4. Diversity, Civic Engagement, and Global Citizenship

In collaboration with the Dean, I will also facilitate discussion about the Cross-College Challenge and

help implement the recommended advising structure for university wide general education as these

aspects of the BU-Hub undergo further development. (ongoing)

Academic Program Review: Facilitate the organization and information gathering needs across

Sargent College to meet the APR goals: “The information that is gathered as part of the review

process helps to foster academic excellence within the unit, identify methods to increase quality, and

provides critical guidance for administrative decisions. In addition, the systematic assessment of

academic programs and the use of assessment results to improve academic quality and

effectiveness are requirements of Boston University’s institutional accreditation as outlined by the

New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).” Initial work was to participate in the

preparation of the “Scope of Review” document. (ongoing)
