ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND ENGLISH LITERATURE This course is compulsory What will I learn?

Pupils will study a range of texts from different cultures and time periods, to investigate and examine how texts are written to influence the world around us. Pupils will study fiction and non-fiction texts written both pre and post 1914. Students will also develop their writing skills by investigating how to use language and structure to influence their reader and create deliberate effects.

What is in the course?

Reading skills: Develop your ability to identify language devices, investigate the effects created, evaluate how a writer manipulates a reader, and compare a range of texts. Writing skills: Develop your ability to use a range of punctuation with accuracy’s, and then to create a range of effects to influence your reader and create deliberate effects. You will also develop your ability to structure and craft a range of different texts for different audiences.

How will I be assessed?

A series of external examinations in June of Year 11. Please note, controlled assessment pieces are no longer part of the English and English Literature GCSE.

You will gain two GCSES: 1 GCSE English language and 1 GCSE English literature

Level 2 Route free choices: ART This course is optional What will I learn?

Pupils will have the opportunity to work in design specialisms such as graphics, fashion, contemporary crafts, 3D, textiles and sculpture as well as the traditional elements of observational drawing and critical studies. They will experience a wide range of materials, techniques and processes that allow them to enhance and develop existing skills and abilities.

What is in the course?

Pupils will produce three pieces of coursework over the duration of the course. They will work in a sketchbook and use this to investigate and research artists, art movements, materials, ideas and outcomes.

Skills needed? Knowledge and research skills, investigating and analysing ideas, experimentation of ideas through materials and techniques which will lead to personal outcomes and experiences.

How will I be assessed?

Coursework (60%) 10 hour practical examination (40%)

COMPUTING This course is optional What will I learn? Entry requirements? Skills needed for this course

GCSE Computing will provide you with an in-depth understanding of how computer technology works and a look at what goes on ‘behind the scenes’. The course will help you learn about critical thinking, analysis and problem solving, which can be transferred to other subjects and even applied in day-to-day life. If you take a GCSE in Computing you can then go on to study the subject at A Level or university. Good Mathematics grades at KS3 (level 5+) There is an emphasis on Mathematical skills including; Boolean algebra, logic and comparison. Ideally you will have some prior programming experience and require a good level of ICT literacy, you should be interested in how computers and computer systems work and have a fondness for problem solving.

What is in the course?

The course has 3 units: Computer Systems and Programming The computer systems and programming unit will teach you the theory about a wide range of issues such as hardware and software, the representation of data in computer systems, databases, computer communications and networking, programming and more. Practical Investigation The practical investigation is all about engaging with computing in the real world. You’ll look at a computing topic in more depth and carry out a practical investigation into a computing issue. Programming Project. The programming project will call on you to design, code and test a solution to three tasks using a suitable programming language.

How will I be assessed?

External formal examination (40% of final mark) Written Paper (1.5 hours). The question paper includes a mixture of short and long answer questions, some of which will require you to write program code. Internal Assessment (60% of final mark) Controlled assessment 1: A practical investigation set by the exam board (30%) Controlled assessment 2: Programming task involves developing and testing a solution to a problem set by OCR (30%)

You will obtain a GCSE in Computing. This qualification is widely recognised and accepted by employers and further education establishments.

GCSE FOOD This course is optional What will I learn?

GCSE Food is a very popular course at Poltair School. If you enjoy cooking and want to be able to make delicious meals and prepare yourself for adult life, this course could be for you. Alternatively if you are interested in a career in hospitality and hope to do a catering course at College when you leave school, then this course is also right for you. You learn about food Science and how to answer in depth questions on nutrition.

What is in the course?

Learn about cooking healthy, nutritious meals, plan menus, look at the cost of preparing meals, learn a lot of different cooking techniques including breads, pastry, biscuits, cakes, sauces, savoury dishes and desserts. Also plan how to make meals in quantity.

Skills needed for this course

This subject is ideal for those pupils who enjoy and are good at designing products and practical work and are able to answer detailed questions about existing products. As there is a significant written controlled assessment element in this option a level 5 in English is needed. Organisation skills are vital, as is communication. A high level of independence is needed throughout the course.

How will I be assessed?

The GCSE currently consists of: A theory paper at the end of the course 40% Two design folders and practical assessments 60% This may, however, change with new specifications to be released soon

What will I gain from studying this subject?

This GCSE will give pupil’s access to many College Courses and roles within the hospitality trade and food industry. Students will develop a range of kitchen skills over time and an understanding of Food Hygiene and safety

FRENCH GCSE This course is compulsory for pupils guided into the EBACC route What will I learn?

Topics included in the course are: Lifestyle Leisure Home and Environment Work and Education

What is in the course?

This course concentrates on four skills. At GCSE this involves two separate examinations in listening and reading, two controlled assessment tasks in writing and two controlled assessment tasks in the form of a dialogue in speaking.

Skills needed for this course?

This four-unit specification requires students to develop their ability to write and speak in French and to understand French when it is written down or spoken.

How will I be assessed?

The listening and reading examinations can be taken at foundation and higher levels. The writing assessment will consist of two controlled assessment tasks which will be classroom based and marked by AQA. The speaking examination lasts between 4 and 6 minutes and consists of two controlled assessment tasks in the form of a dialogue and will be internally assessed. Listening 20% Speaking 30% Reading 20% Writing 30%

What will I gain from studying this subject?

As well as a GCSE qualification, the ability to speak a Modern Language is an important asset in today’s global economy. French is widely spoken in Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. GCSE French helps students develop their language skills in a variety of contexts and a broad understanding of the culture of countries and communities where French is spoken. It encourages enjoyment of language learning and the recognition that language skills enable students to take their place in a multi-lingual global society.

GEOGRAPHY This course is optional What will I learn?

The course investigates places at all scales, from the personal to the global. Students carry out coastal fieldwork and an issues based research project as part of their GCSE. Foundation units will be studied at the start of the course allowing students to explore local environments and develop essential and transferable skills.

What is in the course?

This exciting GCSE course focuses upon a range of human and physical topics which use real life case studies to bring the subject alive. Students will be assessed at the end of their 3 year programme of study, through two examinations and two controlled assessments. Four different topics will be studied for the GCSE incorporating a range of human and physical themes:-

The coastal environment

The urban environment

Living with natural hazards (hazards studied include earthquakes, volcanoes, tropical storms and wildfires)

Investigating global tourism

Skills needed for this course?

Students must be able to communicate clearly through written work and will be required to analyse a range of topical resources. Mathematical skills including graph interpretation and creation are also required. Students will need to have a basic global awareness and feel comfortable interpreting different types of maps on a range of scales.

How will I be assessed?

Qualification: GCSE Geography Assessment: 25% controlled assessment comprising two pieces, one to be a coastal fieldwork study 75% written exam (2 separate exams lasting 1 hour 30 minutes each)

What will I gain from studying this subject?

GCSE Geography will inspire and challenge students to view the world from a range of viewpoints. Geography links well with many other subjects and makes use of digital technology at every opportunity. Through gaining a rich understanding of human and physical processes, recognising patterns and questioning differences in development, pupils broaden their appreciation of our ‘ever shrinking’ world.

HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE BTEC Level1/Level 2 First Award This course is optional What will I learn?

This qualification provides students with an engaging introduction to the Health and Social Care sector. Students will explore key themes by researching the life stages and factors affecting the growth and development of individuals, the student’s role in promoting change in an individual’s environment and gaining an understating of a set of care values used within health and social care. Students should have a keen interest in health and enjoy discussions. They will need to have good team working skills as well as the ability to work independently.

What is in the course?

The qualification consists of a compulsory ‘core’ two units making up 50% of the qualification, and a choice of two (from six) optional units. Core units 1 and 2 = 50% of the qualification Unit 1 ‘Human Lifespan Development’ Students will explore a set of life skills from infancy to later adulthood. Students will identify how factors in a person’s life such as their level of income can both affect and promote their life chances. This unit is externally assessed and will be an examination Unit 2 ‘Health and Social Care Values’ Enables the student to explore care values such as confidentiality, dignity, respect and demonstrate how they could be used within health and social care. Students will also study the importance of meeting the needs of individual people. This unit is internally assessed and will consist of a portfolio of written work.

How will I be assessed?

You will obtain a BTEC Level 2 in Health and Social care. You will also develop your skills in working with people in a range of social contexts: nursing homes, childcare provisions and day care centres. This course can be studied further at College to gain a Level 3 qualification. Health and Social Care is an important qualification for students wishing to pursue a career in the medical, caring and social services sector.

HISTORY – MODERN WORLD This course is optional What will I learn?

Studying Modern World History pupils learn about International Relations in the 20th Century. Pupils will also study political, social and economic histories of at least two countries other than Britain. Controlled Assessment focusses upon British History during both World Wars.

The course is dependent upon strong literacy skills and an ability to skilfully communicate through written work. Students will be required to analyse and evaluate historical sources and use explorative skills to investigate major historical events in the 20th Century.

HOSPITALITY BTEC LEVEL 2 This course is optional What will I learn?

Unit 1: Introducing the Hospitality Industry – this unit covers the different aspects of the hospitality industry, looking at its component parts and the different products and services that are offered as well as the essential processes involved in operating a hospitality business. Unit 2: Working in the Hospitality Industry – this unit covers the importance of team working and customer service for working in a variety of roles within the hospitality industry, and looks at other important aspects such as personal appearance and personal attributes necessary to work successfully.

What is in the course?

The qualification consists of a compulsory ‘core’ two units making up 50% of the qualification, and a mandatory and optional unit, which accounts for the further 50% of the course. The mandatory unit is: Unit 3: Food Safety and Health and Safety in Hospitality – where learners will discover the various aspects of health and safety, and food safety law in relation to those working in the hospitality industry. The optional specialist units offered within this qualification build on the core and provide learners with an opportunity to develop a wider understanding and appreciation of the hospitality industry, depending on their interests and motivation.

25% of the course is externally assessed (exam) and 75% of the course is internally assessed

What will I gain from studying this subject?

The Edexcel BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Hospitality provides the skills, knowledge and understanding for level 2 students to progress to: ● other level 2 vocational qualifications ● level 3 vocational qualifications, such as BTEC Nationals, specifically the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 in Hospitality (QCF) ● related academic qualifications ● employment within the hospitality industry for example, working in junior roles such as assistant chef, waiter/waitress, hotel porter, assistant front-of-house staff, temporary events/match day hospitality staff, concessions catering assistants, fast food servers, or apprenticeships in hospitality and catering.

This course is optional

What will I learn?

Digital Media plays an important part in many areas of our everyday lives and is also an important part of the UK economy. Cambridge Nationals in Creative iMedia will provide you with specific and transferable skills and a solid foundation in understanding and applying digital media production techniques, whether it is in employment or higher education.

What is in the course?

The Cambridge Nationals in Creative iMedia will cover 2 compulsory units: Unit 1 – Pre-production skills Planning is an essential part of working in the creative and digital media sector. This unit will enable you to understand pre-production skills and techniques, as well as gain the knowledge and skills to create digital media products and explore their application. It will also develop their understanding of the client brief, time frames, deadlines and preparation techniques that form part of the planning and creation process. Unit 2 – Creating digital graphics Digital graphics feature in many areas of our lives, and play a very important part in today’s world. The digital media sector relies heavily on these visual stimulants within products to communicate messages effectively. The aim of this unit is for you to understand the basics of digital graphics editing for the creative and digital media sector. In addition a further 2 units which include Digital game design and production Digital sound Digital video Interactive multi-media

Skills needed for this course How will I be assessed?

You will need to be creative and a confident user of ICT. You will have experience of using many different type of computer software, and a desire to learn more about how ICT can be used to create solutions to problems External formal examination (25% of final mark) Unit 1 contains a written paper which is set and marked by OCR. Internal Assessment (75% of final mark) Unit 2 and the other 2 additional optional units will be assessed through the production of coursework where you will be required to produce a portfolio of evidence towards the assessment criteria. All coursework will be assessed internally and externally moderated.

You will obtain a Cambridge National Certificate in Creative iMedia. This qualification is widely recognised and accepted by employers in digital media, gaming and online providers.

An opinion! Students must feel confident to vocalise their opinions about world issues and current affairs. Students must be able to justify their opinions and consider the opinions of others on a range of different issues. The examination is written, therefore student must be able to communication through written answers.

How will I be assessed?

This is a GCSE course which follows the AQA B Specification. There will be two external exams in the summer of year 11.

What will I gain from studying this subject?

Students will gain awareness of the world they live in and of the people who live in it. They will gain a greater knowledge and tolerance of differences amongst global beliefs and as well as being given the opportunity to explore and express their own opinions on a wide range of issues in a range of formats. The thinking skills required in this subject are useful and well respected in many A level and further education courses including law, social sciences, religious students and politics.

MEDIA STUDIES This course is optional What will I learn?

Media Studies is an exciting, creative and challenging course that develops students’ creativity as well as their understanding of the world in which we live. Pupils will explore and examine the influence of the popular media on us as consumers. Throughout the course, students will study the Key Concepts of Media Studies: Representation, Audience, Institution and Media Language. They will learn about a variety of different types of media, including comic books, the popular press, advertising, the film industry, and the music industry, to name a few. Students should have a keen interest in art and photography, ICT and English. They will need to have good team working skills as well as the ability to work independently on their own design projects.

What is in the course?

The course consists of two units: Unit 1 Investigating the Media (external examination), and Unit 2 Understanding the Media (controlled assessments). Unit 1 Investigating the Media (external examination) is based upon an in-depth study of a specific area of Media. The exam topic changes annually based on the most relevant, popular form of media in the UK. Previous exam topics have included Action Adventure Film, The Music Press, The Promotion and Marketing of Gaming; upcoming exam topics include Science Fiction Films and Television Game Shows. Unit 2 Understanding the Media (controlled assessments) develops students’ ability to evaluate the meaning of media texts in both printed and moving forms. Assignment 1 focuses on how target audiences are represented in print, while Assignment 2 develops an understanding of how the film industry promotes films through various types of media. Assignment 3 is a culmination of the skills learned throughout the course, and pupils will produce a music video using the music of their choice.

How will I be assessed?

Students are given a pre-release task one month prior to the exam, and they are expected to plan their own media campaign based on the task for the exam. Internal Assessment (60% of final mark) Students complete three controlled assessments covering three key areas of the media as noted above. The controlled assessments are a mixture of annotated texts, essay answers, and practical video productions.

MUSIC This course is optional What will I learn?

Music is an exciting course that offers opportunities to explore various different musical styles creatively. It is essential that pupils are willing to perform. Pupils will learn to listen to and appraise music, develop their performance skills and learn to compose their own music in a variety of styles. GCSE music students are expected to learn an instrument or study voice; these lessons are provided by the school and are an important part of the course. Performance and active music making is an integral part of the course, so it is vital that pupils develop the confidence to perform by themselves and as part of ensembles.

What is in the course?

Pupils will study various elements of music through three strands of learning; The Western Classical Tradition; Popular Music from the 20th and 21st centuries and World Music. They will learn through performance, composition and listening work, and should expect to commit some time outside of classroom lessons to practising their chosen instrument or singing. Free weekly instrumental/singing lessons are provided either individually or in a small group. Pupils must be committed to attending these lessons.

Skills needed for this course?

We would like to invite all interested pupils to follow the GCSE music course. However, you must be fully committed to learning to play an instrument through attendance at the regular instrumental lessons which will be provided. You should bear in mind that 80% of the final GCSE grade is drawn from your ability to perform and compose music. You should:

- Already play an instrument or sing to at least grade 3 standard or: - Have been attending regular instrumental lessons at school since September 2014.

If you don’t meet either of these criteria then you must attend 3 ‘taster sessions’ prior to making your options choice. These sessions will take place after school and details will be provided very soon during year 8 lesson time.

PERFORMING ARTS - DRAMA LEVEL 2 BTEC This course is optional What will I learn?

This course is for the pupil who loves acting, using lighting and sound, and enjoys performing and working in a group situation. Pupils will develop their practical expertise in improvisation, devised theatre, scripted work, dance/drama, theatre in education. Performing Arts is an exciting, creative and challenging course and has been designed to help candidates meet those challenges.

What is in the course?

Pupils will perform to a variety of audiences, for example children, adults and primary schools. It is essential that pupils are willing to perform. Pupils will have the opportunity to attend the theatre to view a wide range of performances. This will assist them in their own devised pieces as well as prepare them for their written examination. Pupils must be prepared to rehearse during break-times and after school at times.

How will I be assessed?

80% Portfolio – you will complete assignments which are focused around learning and developing warm up techniques, character research and exploration, devising plays, performing scripted plays and evaluating your work and the work of others. You will then also complete two externally assessed assignments which involve preparing for an audition, writing a letter of application for a job in the Performing Arts industry (exam) and exploring the Performing Arts Industry (exam)

What will I gain from studying this subject?

The opportunity to develop interactive and leadership skills, the ability to be a creative thinker and speaking and listening skills. The course provides an excellent progression route into Level 3 courses at college. Students wishing to pursue a career in theatre production, media and performance related arts would benefit greatly from this course.

PHOTOGRAPHY This course is optional What will I learn?

Pupils will have the opportunity to work in several photography specialisms such as graphics, fashion, contemporary photography, and animation, compositional as well as the traditional elements of observational drawing and critical studies linking to photography. They will experience a wide range of materials, techniques and processes that allow them to enhance and develop new or existing skills and abilities in digital media.

Skills needed? Knowledge and research skills, investigating and analysing ideas, experimentation of ideas through materials and techniques which will lead to personal outcomes and experiences.

What is in the course?

Students will use the first year as a foundation into connecting with materials, processes, techniques and researching artists/photographers and crafts people. The aim is for students to gain an understanding into the delivery of a GCSE in Art & Photography.

You will be assessed on developing and connecting to research, investigation, exploring ideas, analysing processes and producing different concepts within Art and Photography.

Your GCSE Coursework will start in yr10. Pupils will produce three pieces of coursework over the duration of the course. They will work in a sketchbook and use this to investigate and research artists, art movements, materials, ideas and outcomes.

Students will learn to become a successful designer and manufacturer of unique products using wood, metal and plastics, or in electronics and graphic media .You will learn to use up to date equipment to make quality products and show how they fit into a competitive market. Some pupils may specialise in Electronic systems.

What is in the course? Wood, Metal , Plastics and electronic systems

Pupils will develop their practical skills in a range of materials, developing products that satisfy a human or commercial need. They will gain valuable skills in drawing styles and will need to understand how products are designed and manufactured. Pupils will make full use of computer systems to design products and cut materials with computer machinery. Pupils who enjoy designing and making 3 dimensional objects will love this course. They will make full use of computer systems to design circuits and CAD/CAM to manufacture their ideas. Students who enjoy making could go on to develop more advanced systems in order to solve real life problems and then evaluate their success.
