Activity:

It is July 10. The school board met last night and you learned that you were appointed assistant principal at East Westchester High School. You are moving from just south of Northland, so you are not really familiar with the area or the school campus. Excited about your new position, you report to the principal’s office bright and early. The principal, Mr. Hightower, meets with you and welcomes you the team. He also explains that he is a bit overwhelmed, being down an administrator. Teachers return on August 1, and, he still needs to hire a chemistry teacher, an AP economics teacher, and a cheerleading coach. Among the list of duties that you are assigned, Mr. Hightower explains that he is making you responsible for the school’s safety plan. The plan is to be reviewed by someone at the district's central office by July 27, and presented to the staff on day one of pre-planning.

With the people around you, list the steps that you would take to develop a safety plan for the high school. Be prepared to share your list.

Testing Plan; Title I Plan; School Improvement Plan?

Personal organization will be reflected in the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization. These tips were

developed by a famous organizational guru.

Strive to be authentic - Be honest with yourself about what you want and why you do what you do.

Seek trusted relationships - Put your effort in building relationships with people you trust and can count on. Be sure those people can trust and count on you.

Page 40: Curriculum - Organizational Managementcurriculum.cowetaschools.org/images/professional_learning...Moreland Elementary School Organizational Manage ment to LKES # 4 The leader fosters

Take care of yourself - You need your health and your energy to be effective. Seek balance in your life.

Listen to your body and organize your day accordingly (when possible.) Realize that in this business, your day will

frequently organize itself without consulting you.

Set a few priorities and stick to them - If everything is equally important, nothing is prioritized.

Page 41: Curriculum - Organizational Managementcurriculum.cowetaschools.org/images/professional_learning...Moreland Elementary School Organizational Manage ment to LKES # 4 The leader fosters

Learn to turn down opportunities that are inconsistent with your priorities - It’s hard to say no, but it can bedone. Know the difference between priorities andpreferences.

Set aside time for focused effort - Find out what thislooks like for you - early mornings/evenings/weekends. It's okay to shut your door occasionally. (Develop a code word with support staff.)

Page 42: Curriculum - Organizational Managementcurriculum.cowetaschools.org/images/professional_learning...Moreland Elementary School Organizational Manage ment to LKES # 4 The leader fosters

Always look for ways of doing things better and faster -Strive to continuously improve efficiency. Remember, when you delegate one task, something else will probably go undone.

Build solid process - Develop procedures that last and runwithout your attention. If it can be done more simply, with fewer people and fewer steps, it is probably better.Know when a check is okay, instead of the check+.

Page 43: Curriculum - Organizational Managementcurriculum.cowetaschools.org/images/professional_learning...Moreland Elementary School Organizational Manage ment to LKES # 4 The leader fosters

Spot trouble ahead and address it - It is your responsibilityto think through the process and determine potentialproblems. Be proactive.

Break your goals into smaller chunks, and work on onechunk at a time - Be methodical. You probably didthis for students to help them organize.

Finish what’s important and stop doing what is not important- Determine what you need to address, what you can stop doing, and what you can delegate.

Page 44: Curriculum - Organizational Managementcurriculum.cowetaschools.org/images/professional_learning...Moreland Elementary School Organizational Manage ment to LKES # 4 The leader fosters

These management practices are three hundred years old

and were developed by Benjamin Franklin.

He was committed to each new behavior.

He worked on only one behavior at a time.

He assessed his progress and referred to his notes dailey.
