  • Annex 1 2009 Pledge Day on My Pledge To Act

    To Build a Harmonious Community through Care for Others and Integrity

    Aims/Objectives

    The aims of the captioned activity is to encourage kindergartens, primary and secondary schools to continue organising the Pledge Day in the new 2009/10 school year with a view to helping students to show care for others and uphold integrity as an individual, in the family, school and society through the collective commitment.

    Details

    2. In response to the long-term measures recommended by the Team Clean, the then Education and Manpower Bureau initiated the Pledge Day on My Pledge to Act Live Hygiene Live Health in 2003. The Pledge Days from the school year 2003 to 2008 were well-received with participation from kindergartens, primary and secondary schools. 3. To sustain the impact, all schools are encouraged to continue to organise the Pledge Day in the 2009/10 school year. In 2008, the Education Bureau has revised and enhanced the Moral and Civic Education Curriculum Framework by adding 2 priority values namely Care for Others and Integrity. Hence, the theme of the Pledge Day for the new school year is 2009 Pledge Day on My Pledge To Act To Build a Harmonious Community through Care for Others and Integrity, its objective is to rally concerted efforts of parents, schools and community to arouse the public awareness on the importance of helping students to develop positive values and attitudes. 4. Schools are also advised to incorporate relevant measures into the school development plans so as to help students realise the pledge, and plan the relevant learning activities for students systematically and holistically by making reference to My Pledge to Act and the newly revised 2008 Moral and Civic Education Curriculum Framework. 5. All schools will receive two posters of 2009 Pledge Day on My Pledge To Act To Build a Harmonious Community through Care for Others and Integrity by post around late August. Additional information and school exemplars will be provided for schools reference on the webpage of the Moral and Civic Education Section (www.edb.gov.hk/cd/mce) (Chinese version only) around end of August.

    WWF Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Programme

    (Primary Schools) (2009-2010 School Year)

    Aims/Objectives

    The aims of the captioned Programme are to enhance primary school students understanding of our natural environment, as well as its interaction with social and economic development.

    Details

    2. As agreed in the 2002 Johannesburg Earth Summit, 2005 was set as the year to launch the programme entitled United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (SD). The objective is to promote the concept of SD through education, which is one of the important strategies to combat environmental, social and economic problems in the 21st Century. It is hoped that through international efforts and education, the aim to enhance a better living quality, resources conservation and global economic development can be achieved. 3. The World Wide Fund For Nature Hong Kong (WWF) is going to organise five Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) programmes for primary school pupils in the school year 2009-2010. 4. Details of the ESD programmes are provided in the invitation letter from WWF as attached in Appendix 2a. 5. School heads who wish to participate in these programmes are requested to apply online, or complete the attached application form in Appendix 2h and return them to WWF. All applications will be processed on a first-come-first-served basis. The closing date for applications for Mai Po Primary School Education Programme is 30 June 2009 (Tuesday).

    MAI PO PRIMARY SCHOOL EDUCATION PROGRAMME For Primary 4 to 6 students September 2009 to August 2010

    Learning IN the environment is an effective strategy for Education for Sustainable Development. The Mai Po Nature Reserve is an open-air classroom for enriching students learning experience by developing their interest in, understanding of and concern about OUR environment.

    A. EDUCATION PROGRAMME

    WWF has developed THREE PROGRAMME OPTIONS for primary school teachers to select according to their teaching needs: 1. Wetland Detective

    Through a series of exploring, sensory and interactive activities, students will realize the importance and values of wetlands to wildlife and human. This results as well as to enhance students interest and appreciation to the natural beauty of wetland environment. This programme is open throughout the year.

    2. Story of a Bird Through bird watching and environmental games, students will learn how birds adapt to wetlands and the importance of conserving Mai Po for migratory birds and people. This programme is highly recommended for visits scheduled in Autumn, Winter and Spring.

    3. Wetland Insect Watch Through an environmental friendly insect-watching activity, students will learn how insects adapt to wetlands and understand the inter-relationship between different kinds of wildlife in our Mai Po Nature Reserve. This programme is only open in Summer and Autumn (from April to October).

    B. EDUCATION APPROACH

    The programme is conducted through a wide range of interactive activities, which include wildlife observation, demonstration, role-playing, interpretation and games. Bird watching and role playing games will be conducted for students joining either the Wetland Detective or Story of a Bird; students joining the Wetland Insect Watch will experience pond-dipping and other environmental friendly insect-watching activities.

    Learning IN the environment is an effective strategy for Education for Sustainable Development. Through different interactive activities, students knowledge on environmental and antique conservation will be enriched. The programme also provides a pot plant and student logbook after the programme.     Pre-trip briefing: A briefing and slide show at WWF Island House Conservation Studies Centre enables students to develop a clear overall picture of the history of Island House, declared monument in Hong Kong, and different plant species in Island House Arboretum.

    Hoi Ha Detective is a marine education programme using Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park as an open-air classroom. Through a series of sensory activities, students will best be able to discover the natural beauty of sandy and rocky shores ecology at Hoi Ha. The marine discovery experience culminates in a coral watching boat trip during which students will be able to explore the precious coral community well preserved in the sea of Hong Kong.

    A. EDUCATION PROGRAMME

    Hoi Ha Detective is specially designed for senior primary students. The programme will have students eyes opened to the diverse marine environment, such as coral communities, sandy and rocky shores through interesting sensory activities and environmental games. Together with the hands-on experience of observing the underwater world, students will be able to learn how marine animals adapt to the sea and the importance of conserving the marine environment and resources for people.

    B. EDUCATION APPROACH

    The programme is conducted with an interactive approach through a vast range of formats, including exploration in shallow water*, sensory activities, environmental games, role play, interpretation and marine wildlife observation and identification. Approximate one hour coral observation tour by Glass-bottomed Boat is included in the programme**.

    Sustainable lifestyle Target Education Programme (STEP) is an outreach education programme which aims to promote awareness among students of the issues of climate change and sustainable living. The content of STEP was designed to match and link to the Learning Objectives of Primary General Studies curriculum. Through a series of fun and interactive activities specially designed to meet primary school students learning needs, students will recognize themselves as the stewards of the planet, and become committed to take a STEP forward in their daily lives to follow a sustainable lifestyle, protect the environment and use resources wisely.

    EDUCATION PROGRAMME

    This one-week in-school programme comprises 4 core educational activities, extension activities and online activities: 1. Core activities (hosted by WWF Education Officers)

    Talk --- 2 levels of talk are available for junior (P1-3) and senior (P4-6) primary school students

    Exhibition --- a set of colourful and informative panels and a 3-dimensional exhibit for students to self-learn through reading Mass game --- an inter-group quiz for students to gain knowledge through interactive activities Drama --- a fun show to raise students learning interest

    2. Extension activities are classroom activities that build upon the core activities. WWF will provide teaching

    plans and related teaching tools for teachers to organize these activities. Designed to target students of different levels with diverse needs, extension activities are student-oriented which include environmental art class, environmental game, hand puppet theatre, design competition, activity worksheet, family action plan, individual action pledge, statistics collection, etc.

    3. STEPs website (www.wwf.org.hk/step) provides various multi-media and interactive educational activities

    EDUCATION APPROACH STEPs diversified educational activities enrich students learning experience and could be adopted as life-wide learning or thematic learning activities. All the core and extension activities may be flexibly integrated into school timetables in accordance with schools individual needs and characteristics.

    the programme vehicle to park outside the campus for programme materials unloading. The school campus has suitable venue (e.g. covered playground) to place the exhibits (an area of around 4 m X 6 m). The school hall is located on ground floor OR can be reached by a lift. The lift can carry goods of dimensions not less than 130 cm X 80 cm

    X 160 cm. The school hall is equipped a computer, a projector, a screen and a sound system (which includes a CD player and microphone lines). The school hall has to be available for stage set up 1 hour before the drama starts and dismantle 1 hour after the drama ends. The school will assign at least 2 janitors to assist in moving and setting up programme-related materials (e.g. exhibits and drama stage). Most of the students will complete the online pre-activity and post-activity before and after the programme week. The school will submit students learning results (e.g. student worksheets, reports, artworks etc.) within one month after the completion of

    programme. Details will be confirmed after discussion with WWF staff. Format: Save the digital copies of the student works in CD-roms/DVD-roms.

    Remarks: If WWF staff considers that the activity venue does not fulfil the above requirements on the programme day, WWF reserves the rights

    to cancel the activities without prior notice. PROGRAMME FEE AND DEPOSIT The programme is free of charge, while the school has to hand in a refundable deposit of HK$2,000 after your application is confirmed by WWF. If the following situation occurs, WWF reserves the rights not to refund the deposit:

    1. After the core activity dates and time are confirmed by WWF, the school withdraws from the programme OR 2. After the core activity dates and time are confirmed by WWF, the school changes the activity dates and time less than one month before

    Wonders of the Ocean is a marine-themed exhibition kit developed in accordance with the curriculum of General Studies. Through story telling approach, the exhibition praises the beauty of ocean and promotes marine conservation to pupils in an inspiring and intriguing way. This education resource also serves as an excellent supporting material for teachers to organize marine-themed environmental education activities in campus. The objective is to motivate pupils to learn about the environment, to enhance their understanding of the interactions between our ocean and the society, in order to achieve the goals of Education for Sustainable Development.

    INTRODUCTION

    The exhibition pack is specially designed to raise primary school students interest and concern in marine environment. The exhibition kit includes: 1. Exhibition Set

    The set contains 15 full colour A1-sized (83 cm x 58 cm) bilingual panels. The topics include the introduction of different marine and coastal organisms, destructive human activities like pollution, reclamation and over-fishing. The aim is to acquaint pupils with the importance of balance between conservation of natural resources and socio-economic activities.

    2. Teachers Guide (hard and soft copies)

    The guide includes seven factsheets which provide valuable information to further elaborate all the contents on the panels. Five ready-to-use worksheets and nine suggested marine theme activities are also included in the guide to assist teachers in organizing environmental activities in schools. The different worksheets and interactive activities in the Teachers Guide can suit for different teaching goals and study levels of students.

    EDUCATION APPROACH All the contents of the Wonders of the Ocean are presented in bilingual (Chinese and English) to enhance the language skills of students. All the cartoons and panel layout were drawn and designed by professional artists to attract primary students interest.

    2. As agreed in the 2002 Johannesburg Earth Summit, 2005 was set as the year to launch the programme entitled United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (SD). The objective is to promote the concept of SD through education, which is one of the important strategies to combat environmental, social and economic problems in the 21st Century. It is hoped that through international efforts and education, the aim to enhance a better living quality, resources conservation and global economic development can be achieved. 3.     Learning IN the environment is an effective strategy for Education for Sustainable Development. The Mai Po Nature Reserve is an open-air classroom for enriching students learning experiences by developing their interest in, understanding of and concern about OUR environment.

    A. EDUCATION PROGRAMME The Programme aims to promote understanding of wetland ecology and awareness of and concern about the conservation of

    Mai Po Inner Deep Bay a Wetland of International Importance under Ramsar Convention. SIX PROGRAMME OPTIONS have been developed to suit students different levels and learning needs. 1. Wetland Encounter (For Secondary 1 to 3)

    The programme specially designed for junior secondary students. Students can better understand the uniqueness of wetlands through different interactive activities, including word-guessing game and photo sharing.

    2. Who wants to be a Wetland Reserve Officer? (For Secondary 1 to 7) A field-based programme which enables students to understand the basic concepts and importance of conservation management through action and participation. Students will learn basic ecological surveying techniques and participate in field works in the reserve. (This progrmme would only be arranged on Tuesdays)

    3. Mangrove Ecology in Deep Bay (For Secondary 4 to 7) Through studying mangrove ecology, students will understand important functions of wetlands and become

    concerned about mangrove conservation worldwide. Students will also acquire the skills to identify different mangrove species and their adaptation features.

    4. Urban Planner @ Deep Bay (For Secondary 4 to 7) This programme highlights the different land uses in and around the Ramsar Site with special focus on the historical changes and current conflicts in land use issues. This programme will also enrich students understanding of the man-land relationship and the land use planning mechanisms in Hong Kong.

    5. Wetland Ecologist (For Secondary 4 to 7) Through interpretation, wildlife survey, field studies and discussions, students will learn about the value and

    importance of biodiversity, and lastly enhance awareness and concern about wetland conservation. (This programme equipped with online learning component. Teachers and students are required to go to the e-learning

    platform< www.wwf.org.hk/wetlandecologist/ > before visit to facilitate learning.) 6. Sustainable Development @ Deep Bay (For Secondary 4 to 7) Through introductory trip, group activities and discussions, students will learn about the concept and importance of

    sustainable development, and become aware of the necessity to conserve the wetlands. B. EDUCATIONAL APPROACH With an issue inquiry approach, the Programme serves as a case study for students to do Project Learning in studying

    environmental issues.     By studying a real case of pollution problem in Tolo Harbour and the changes in surrounding land use in Tai Po New Town, students will learn about the importance of town planning in environmental conservation.

    A. EDUCATION PROGRAMME

    Pre-trip briefing: A briefing and slide show at the WWF Island House Conservation Studies Centre enables students to develop a clear overall picture of changes in the natural landscape and land uses in the Tai Po New Town since the mid 1970s.

    Field trip: An on site field trip to different areas in Tai Po district. Stopping points include Lam Tsuen River, Tai Po Town Centre, Ting Kok Mangrove (Site of Special Scientific Interest), Yim Tin Tsai Fish Culture Zone and Tai Po Industrial Estate.

    Transport arrangement: Schools must arrange their own coach for the field study programme. The coach will be used

    during the whole programme. Coach must have a built-in public address (PA) system. The Field Study Programme will be changed to an Island House Visit if any of the above

    requirements are not met. B. EDUCATION APPROACH

    With an issue inquiry approach, the Programme serves as a case study for students to do Independent Enquiry Study (IES). A real case study approach will be adopted to emphasize the importance of balance between urban development and nature conservation.

    Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park is one first designated Marine Parks in Hong Kong. The establishment of the Marine Life Centre in the park provides access to a priceless resource for enjoyment and education, as well as an ideal place to enhance students learning experiences.

    A. EDUCATION PROGRAMME The Hoi Ha Wan Secondary School Programme aims to provide hands-on experience to the students to explore the marine environment, as well as to learn more about the importance of marine ecosystem and the threats to the sea through an interactive approach. THREE PROGRAMME OPTIONS have been developed to suit students different levels and learning needs. 1. Marine Discovery (For Secondary 1 to 3) #

    A centre-based programme covers different aspects of the marine environment, such as physical features, coral communities and associated marine life. Students will be able to understand and explore the wonders of the Hong Kongs underwater world.

    2. Who wants to be an Oceanographer? (For Secondary 4 to 7) # A centre-based programme provides practical hands-on experience of marine science. Activities include simple measurements on air and sea climates, visibility and salinity of seawater as well as observation of the plankton which helps the students to understand the relationship between the physical features and the complex marine ecosystem.

    3. Who wants to be a Coastal Ecologist? (For Secondary 4 to 7) Students will be able to investigate the intertidal environment through a series of field studies* focusing on the distribution and abundance of life in various intertidal habitats, such as rocky shore, sandy shore or mangroves (depends on the time available). (Please note that this programme will be carried out during low tide.)

    Healthy Diet Healthy Ocean is an exhibition pack developed for Education for Sustainable Development. The education resource aims to raise secondary school students awareness and understanding of environmental impacts of consuming seafood commonly available in Hong Kong and South China and to inspire the students to adopt sustainable consumption and lifestyles.     The exhibition pack was specially designed to raise secondary school students concern about the environmental impacts of consuming seafood. The exhibition pack includes: 1. Exhibition Set

The topics depicted in the panels include the environmental impacts when harvesting seafood such as overfishing, marine habitat destruction and accidental by-catch.     With four ready-to-use student activities, the guide supports teachers to run pre-activity to familiarize students with the issue before reading the panel. Moreover, the suggested post-activities assist teachers to access the learning outcome of the students after reading the panel. There are also two information sheets to provide further information on the contents of the exhibition panel. A selected glossary is provided to facilitate students interpretation while reading the panel.

    The Sunday Smile Drawing and Writing Competitions

    Aims / Objectives

    This is to invite primary schools to participate in the captioned competitions.

    2. The captioned competitions are based on the English radio programme for primary school children, The Sunday Smile, which is broadcast on RTHK3 every Sunday from 9:00 to 9:30 am. Pupils are encouraged to respond to the funny cultural serial Crazy Chris by drawing a picture of the character or writing a new ending to the story. To exercise their imagination, pupils may also write a new story for Crazy Chris. Through the competitions, we aim to develop pupils listening and writing skills and enhance their motivation in learning English. 3. The competitions are categorised into lower and upper primary levels: (i) Listen and Draw (for Primary 1-3 pupils); and (ii) Listen and Write (for Primary 4-6 pupils). Schools are invited to encourage their pupils to take part in the competitions.
