BORN TO PRAISE YOU • Getting Started • Page 2

You’d love to teach your kids to worship—really worship.

You’d love to include your kids in worship services with congregational participation.

You’d love to breathe new life into your kids choir program.

Maybe you don’t have a kids choir and do not know where to start.

Maybe you are a volunteer leading a kids choir and don’t have a lot of time, experience, or resources.

Children’s Worship Series is for you!

Here’s why:

The goal of Children’s Worship Series (CWS) is to raise up a new generation of worshipers. Many churches emphasize evangelism and discipleship, but it’s hard to find a systematic method that will teach kids how to worship. And worship is the thing that we will do forever! CWS exists to equip churches with elements that will cause children to grow spiritually, while developing lifelong worship and discipleship values.

CWS is great for churches that desire to move from a musical-driven mode to a worship-based model. It is also a scalable resource—ideal for any size kids choir. Since the focus is on worship, the number of singers is irrelevant. What is important is that the leadership has a passion for worship that is infectious, a love for kids that is boundless, and a conviction that, while God is changeless, our methods and materials must adapt in order to meet the needs of today’s children.

Calling All Kids Leaders!

BORN TO PRAISE YOU • Getting Started • Page 3

CWS is adaptable—you can use it as is, or you can choose applicable elements for your situation. Each song can stand alone; so, even if you have a thriving choir program, you can supplement it with this material. If you choose to use all of the music, you have two options for presenting it to your congregation or audience: a worship-service format or a character-driven choir performance.

The lesson plans provide step-by-step teaching instructions that most adults, or older teens, can lead with minimal preparation. Basic musical understanding is helpful, but not required, for leaders. The simple games and crafts included for younger choirs are optional.

Each lesson plan includes a devotional that can be used independently in children’s church, chapel services, camps, and so forth. The choreography videos show simple, fun movement that will aid in learning and sharing the songs.

The music of Community Bible Church Kids Choir is innovative and appealing. There is a great mix of new music, classic and current praise and worship songs, as well as contemporary Christian music. The songs are in kid-friendly keys and are sung by children in our program. The tracks are fresh and engaging for kids.

There is no product like this available in the marketplace. The methods used are tried and true. CWS works!

Watching kids worship authentically in rehearsals and seeing the power of their leadership during worship services are two of the most moving things I’ve ever experienced. While I try to teach kids to be excellent musicians and confident performers, I constantly remind myself that this should never be an end unto itself. When we perform well, we entertain a congregation only for the moment. When we teach kids to engage in worship and, in turn, motivate a congregation to do the same, we have done something eternal. Hearts are changed, and Jesus is exalted.

We hope that CWS is a resource that will prove to be as transformational for your church and community as it has been for ours. Please let us know if we can do anything to assist you in implementing this material.

May God richly bless your ministry!

How to Use Children’s Worship Series

for SpringSo, you’ve purchased Children’s Worship Series (CWS) for your choir, and you’re excited and ready for a fresh start. Now that you have an arsenal of teaching materials at your fingertips—lesson plans, lyric sheets, lead sheets, multiple audio tracks, piano/vocal music, PowerPoint® files, choreography video, and program scripts—do you feel like you need one of those mall maps that says “You are here!”? Don’t worry! CWS was planned and constructed with the volunteer director in mind.

Discovering the DVD-ROM and Digital BundleThe DVD-ROM or downloadable digital bundle contains everything you need to have a successful semester. This resource provides you with all of the CWS Born To Praise You materials: PDFs, mp3 audio, mp4 video, and PowerPoint® files. Please be aware that the DVD-ROM is a storage medium; thus, it is not playable in any CD or DVD player.

All mp3 audio must be transferred to a playable audio CD or computer audio player (iTunes®, QuickTime®, etc.) of your choice.

Video files must be imported into DVD authoring/finishing software (iMovie®, Roxio®, AuthorScript®, etc.) and burned to a playable DVD or imported into media presentation software (MediaShout®, ProPresenter®, EasyWorship®, etc.).

Where to StartBegin on page 7, with “How to Maintain a Kids Choir Program.” This informative guide walks you through the processes of planning, promotion, registration, volunteer recruitment, communication, and how to maintain momentum.

Are you ready to jump in? You’ll find 10 Weekly Lesson Plans that build upon one another and prepare you for a presentation or worship service after Week 10. Each plan is easy to use, with practical, teachable music and instruction; a time for worship and devotion; and suggestions for games and activities. For those with music training, lead sheets and piano/vocal music are also included. Week 10 is a dress rehearsal outline, with time-tested suggestions, to make this preparation time run smoothly.

Two nonseasonal program scripts are provided. You can choose a character-driven, drama/musical-style performance or a worship-based model, designed to lead a congregation as part of a regular worship service.

Every song has a choreography video which can be used to prepare leaders in advance, or to teach kids during rehearsal. Each Weekly Lesson Plan has a corresponding Power- Point presentation, which includes lyrics for each song and the Scriptures discussed during devotional time.*

If you’re looking for children’s choir material that can be executed with minimal preparation and a small staff, CWS is for you! With the step-by-step weekly plans, choreography videos, PowerPoint files, and multiple audio, you are ready to go. You may also duplicate and print ANY files.

If you have many volunteers and want to take your choir program to the next level, we have great news for you! CWS is easily adaptable for any size group. There are opportunities to add small-group dances, costumes, and props to maximize your choir performance or enhance your worship experience, as well as utilize the gifts of volunteers.

If you have an established, successful choir program, use this resource and its songs as supplements. Adjust the materials to meet your particular needs.

Your kids will love this new music! It will get them excited about worshiping Jesus. We can’t wait to see how God will move in the lives of your children this semester.

*If you choose not to use the PowerPoint presentations, lead sheets or lyric sheets can be printed for the kids. Printthem, hole punch, and place in a three-ring binder/folder for each child, or make booklets using a plastic spiral-binding system.

WELCOME AND WORSHIP

NOTES: If your choirs are normally divided into smaller units in multiple classrooms, combine Older and Younger groups for the Kickoff. Use the Younger Choir lesson plan for Week 1. If only Older Choirs are meeting together for the first week, use this Older-only lesson plan.

Collect or prepare: • pencils (one per kid)• paper• calculators for Older Choir kids (most cell phones have these)• instruction sheet for Older Choir game, if desired• 12 different colors of helium balloons and signs to represent 12 months of the year• party favors (one per kid), such as party hats, crowns, streamers, horns, blowouts, kazoos,

glow sticks, lip whistles, hand clappers, slide flutes, mini maracas, ball clackers, and so forth• birthday-themed cupcakes, mini cupcakes, or sheet cake• paper plates, napkins, forks

(Designate 12 areas of the room for birthday months. Mark each with a balloon and sign.)

(As kids arrive, divide them into pairs.)

Older Choir GameThis math problem reveals your date of birth! • Give each pair an instruction sheet, or call out the following steps:

• Ask your partner what month he/she was born; write the corresponding number (1-12).• Multiply by 4.• Add 13.• Multiply by 25.• Subtract 200.• Add the day of the month your partner was born.• Multiply by 2.• Subtract 40.

Play demo of “Born to Praise You,” and various other songs from this semester, as kids arrive for the Kickoff.

• Multiply by 50.• Add the last two digits of the year your partner was born.• Subtract 10,500.• The answer is your partner’s date of birth!

It’s so good to be back in choir! Our theme this semester is Born to Praise You. We will discover that, from the moment we were born, we were created to worship. Let’s listen to our theme song. Every time we hear the words born, praise, or worship, we will stand up/sit down. During part of the song, we will also do this:

(Demonstrate the stomp-stomp-clap movement for the Bridge. It can be heard on the demo.) stomp stomp clap (rest) stomp stomp clap (rest) 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4

(During the Bridge, lead kids in the stomp-stomp-clap movement. If it is too difficult for your group, wait and try it once they have learned the song.)

Isn’t that a great song? It has such a wonderful message: we were all born to praise the Lord! Let’s talk some more about when we were born. We’re going to break into groups by birthday month.

•Instruct kids to move to the area designated for their birthday month.• Once kids are in groups, they discuss favorite things about their birthday month,

such as holidays, weather/season, birthday party ideas, and so forth.• Allow time for discussion, then ask a representative from each group to quickly

share some of the favorite things mentioned.• Randomly distribute party favors.

Now, we are going to celebrate with our party favors:

• If your party favor makes noise or has an action, make some noise!• If your party favor is quiet, then yell, “I was born to praise the Lord,”

and use your party favor to celebrate—put on party hats, dance withyour glow sticks, move your streamers, and so forth.

(After the celebration, tell kids to return to their seats and put party favors under their chairs to take home at the end of choir.)

Play demo of “Born to Praise You.” Monitor kids as they stand up and sit down.

Display Psalm 8:1-2 on a screen, white board, chalkboard, or poster board.

MESSAGE

Look at this verse:

“O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens. You have taught children and infants to [give you praise], silencing your enemies and all who oppose you” (Psalm 8:1-2, NLT). Scripture quotation taken from the Holy Bible, New Living Translation, copyright © 1996, 2004, 2007, 2013 by Tyndale House Foundation. Used by permission of Tyndale House Publishers, Inc., Carol Stream, IL 60188. All rights reserved.

(Read these statements aloud, and have kids fill in the words where you pause.)

• Lord, Your ____________ __________ fills the __________.• Your _________ is higher than the ___________.

That means Jesus’ name is the best name in heaven and on earth!

• You teach ___________ (that’s you!) and __________ (that used to be you!)to give You ________.

When do you learn to praise Jesus? You arrive in this world with the ability and desire to praise Jesus. Who taught you how to do that? God did!

Did you know that you were born to worship? Point to your neighbor and say, “You were born to worship.”

(Kids respond.)

Being in choir helps us learn ways to worship. It also helps us learn how to lead others. Kids choir is like worship school for life, helping us become lifelong worshipers—here on earth and someday in heaven. God has given each of you a gift, talent, or personality trait that can be used to show others who Jesus is. Sing the Verse of “Born to Praise You,” a cappella, with me:

I was born to praise You I was born to praise You I was born to praise You Jesus

(majestic) (name) (earth)(glory)

BORN TO PRAISE YOU • Older Choir • Week 1 • Page 5

I was born to sing Your song Worship You my whole life long I was born to praise You so here I go

Let’s take a minute to think about ways that you praise and serve Jesus in your own special way. Maybe you are a great friend, or an exceptional dancer who shares your talents with others in worship at church. Perhaps you like to read and memorize Bible verses and share them with people around you. Maybe you are a great helper, or you pray for others regularly. Close your eyes and think about it.

(Give them one minute to think about this.)

We will sing the Verse again. When you sing so here I go, imagine yourself doing some of the things you thought about. Dedicate those gifts to the Lord.

(Repeat the Verse, then give kids a minute or so to pray silently, before offering this prayer.)

PRAY: Lord, thank You for creating us to praise You. Help us learn how to praise You better, so that we experience Your presence and power in our lives. Help us discover that we can praise You in lots of ways, using different kinds of gifts. Help us give our best for Your glory. Lord, we were born to praise You. I commit my life to worship You forever. Amen.

Older Choir

CHARACTERS:Noah— believer and typical boy; can be dressed like choir, but should wear a backpack

and carry a water bottleAva— believer; friendly and willing to help; can be dressed like choir, but should wear

a backpack and carry a notebook or folder with a paper sticking out of it Ethan— goes to church, but more of a slacker and goof-off; can be dressed like choir,

but should wear a small backpack that is light, with little, if anything, inside Zoey— believer; very smart and likes to use big words; confident and serious; can be

dressed like choir, but should wear a full backpack and carry two books

(Choir is standing on risers/in loft. Apart from choir, action takes place at school. There should be space for walking, as if in a hallway. A table should be set off to one side. Characters should appear to be walking in hallway, as if to class.)

Media Note: Headset microphones will work best, if available, so kids can have full range of motion for gestures/movements. Mute actor microphones during choir songs.

Note: These speaking parts occur during “Let Praise Awaken.”

(over meas. 2-9 of “Let Praise Awaken”)Noah:  God, I’m ready to praise You! I’m ready to sing and worship You with all my heart!

Ava:  I will wake up singing Your songs! It’s a new day to praise You!

Ethan:  I will wake up the world with my praise!

Zoey:  It’s time for kids like us to rise and sing!

(over meas. 63-71 of “Let Praise Awaken”)Noah:  Let my praise reach every nation!

Ava:  I will sing of Your greatness no matter where I am.

Ethan:  We lift You up, Jesus!

Zoey:  Cover the earth with Your glory, so the whole world will know how great You are!

Ethan:  We’re going to explode with worship!

Ava:  We praise You, Jesus!

(after “Let Praise Awaken”)Ethan:  Whew! Thank goodness Ms. Jenkins is out today! I didn’t do my homework.

Ava:  You never do your homework.

Ethan:  Oh yeah, right…I don’t. Let me see your science worksheet. (grabs paper sticking out of notebook/folder)

Ava:  Hey, give that back. (Noah grabs it from Ethan)

Noah:  I might want to copy that too. I don’t understand the water cycle.

Zoey:  (grabs paper and hands it back to Ava) First of all, we don’t copy. And second, the water cycle is easy: evaporation, condensation, precipitation. The sun heats up water and turns it into vapor—evaporation. Up in the atmosphere, the vapor cools and changes back into water—condensation. The water falls back down to earth—precipitation. Then the whole thing starts over again.

Ethan:  That’s too hard. Those are big words. The only thing I remember from class is that you can’t make any more water.

Noah:  Yeah, water just recycles. This water right here (takes sip from water bottle) might have been from a lake where a dinosaur was doing the backstroke. (imitates backstroke)

Ava:  Geez….Maybe this song will help: (sung to “She’ll Be Coming ’Round the Mountain” tune) Water travels in a cycle, yes it does; Water travels in a cycle, yes it does. It goes up—evaporation. It forms clouds of condensation. Falls down as precipitation, yes it does. (Ava takes a bow)

Ethan:  Yeah, that helps. But wouldn’t it be easier just to copy your paper?

Ava:  God doesn’t like cheaters. Think about it like this: God is all around us, just like water. He is in three forms like water: He is our Father, our Savior, and the Holy Spirit. Sometimes He is gentle, and sometimes His presence is heavy. Then, sometimes He opens up the heavens and shows us His glory!

“OPEN UP THE HEAVENS”

Solos on mics: ______________________________ (Verse 1)

______________________________ (Verse 2)

______________________________ (Bridge)

Ethan:  Now we’ve got God descending like a cloud. How does that work?

Ava:  God is a part of everything. Aren’t you listening at church?

Zoey:  Yep, King of kings and Lord of lords, powerful Victor, the Lion and the Lamb.

Noah:  That’s my favorite part of this next song—“Hail, hail, Lion of Judah!”

“VICTORY CHANT”
