BRAIN MEDICINEFOR NON-SPECIALISTS

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS, TRANSLATION AND EXPLOITATION OF RESEARCH

The aim of this interactive workshop is to deepen and complete the online course on brain medicine for non-specialists with the most recent advances in research on diseases such as neurodegenerative, neuroimmunology and neuropsychiatric disorders. Lectures and seminars will be accompanied by visits of neurological and psychiatric facilities and labs and by discussion rounds. Experts in clinical brain medicine from local and international universities will be available on site.

The workshop is open to the whole student community and early post-docs upon application. Applications from young female investigators are highly encouraged.

This “hackathon” style workshop completes and complements the online course on intellectual property rights, translation and exploitation of research. After wrapping up some parts of the contents taught in the online course, participants will work in groups and present their ideas in the end. Lecturers from the online course will be present on-site to guide the participants through their work.

The workshop is open to the whole student community and early post-docs upon application. Applications from young female investigators are highly encouraged.

RESEARCH, ETHICS AND SOCIETAL IMPACT

This workshop aims to provide the participants with knowledge on the breadth and scope of ethical issues contained in the HBP. Lectures and hands-on sessions will be led by experts and will include topics such as the ethics of neuroscience and the neuroscience of ethics, dual use, responsible research and innovation, cognitive enhancement, ICT ethical issues, ethical use of robots, big data and individual privacy, and the use of animals in research.

This workshop is open to the whole student community and early post-docs upon application. Applications from young female investigators are highly encouraged.

NEUROBIOLOGY FOR NON-SPECIALISTS

ICT FOR NON-SPECIALISTS

The aim of this interactive workshop is to provide practical insights into basic and translational neuroscience research for interested non-specialists. The topics addressed range from essential neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, over imaging (including high resolution methods for synapse analysis) to networks. Plasticity and modulation of networks and signal transmission under physiological (like learning and memory) and pathological situations (like addiction, epilepsy or neurodegeneration) will form an essential part.

Lectures and seminars will be accompanied by lab visits, practical work and open discussion rounds. Experts in functional neuroanatomy, neurobiochemistry, neuropharmacology and psychiatry will be available on site.

This workshop is open to the whole student community and early post-docs upon application. Applications from young female investigators are highly encouraged.

Working on the frontiers between neuroscience and ICT, or medicine and ICT, requires basic knowledge in the fi eld of computer science. This workshop complements the online course ICT for non-specialists and provides practical insights into ICT research for young investigators interested in the subject without an ICT background, who require some basics for their research. Lectures and seminars will be accompanied by practical work and open discussion rounds. Experts in various areas of ICT will be available on site.

The workshop is open to the whole student community and early post-docs upon application. Applications from young female investigators are highly encouraged.

Educational activities for the upcoming funding period:The Education Programme is currently fi nalising a transdisciplinary curriculum for graduate students. From 2017 onwards, three open online courses will be off ered that teach science for non-specialists in the HBP disciplines neurobiology, ICT, and brain medicine, and two courses on the complementary subjects of ethics and IPR. Each course will be completed by a face-to-face workshop.

An advanced school will be organised on each of the core disciplines neuroscience, ICT and medicine, with an emphasis on current challenges of the fi eld. Lectures and tutorials by selected experts will provide insights into cutting-edge research issues.

Starting in 2017, an annual HBP Student Conference will be organised for young researchers from the fi elds of neuroscience, brain medicine and computer science. Through working across boundaries and linking the various fi elds, it will provide an opportunity for extensive scientifi c discussions among peers and faculty, and also a fertile soil for new, innovative ideas.

The HBP Education Programme is a multi-disciplinary teaching programme for young researchers working in and between the fi elds of neuroscience, ICT, and medicine.

The Education Programme off ers various non-specialist and advanced educational events that serve as a platform for scientifi c exchange among participants from within as well as from outside the Human Brain Project.

Master students already carrying out research

PhD students

Researchers who received their doctoral degree within the past three years

Provide young European scientists with transdisciplinary knowledge and skills

Connect young researchers within and outside the HBP

Raise awareness of the project‘s work and results

Organise workshops and advanced schools on a regular basis

Include specifi c curricula in training events to strengthen software development and project management
