M ember SPOTLIGHT: THE PENGUINFor ten years, the Penguin has been a familiar landmark in downtown Bethany Beach. Originally opened as the Penguin Diner in 2007 by Mark Neumann, the restaurant catered to families, particularly with young children, and the diner-style décor included lots of artwork by children both local and visiting from out of town. In 2007, Katie McLeud and daughters Jen and Lee relocated to the area from Vermont, where they were organic farmers before it was trendy. Along the way, Katie, the general manager decided to “retire,” which she admits “didn’t exactly go as planned.” Once Mark’s children were grown, he decided it was time to make a change, and it didn’t take long before Mark lured Katie out of retirement to partner with him and revamp the Penguin Diner to The Penguin. Still family-friendly, the restaurant was remodeled, and the checkered black and white motif with red accents was replaced by serene blue tones, still retaining the whimsical aspect of penguins throughout. The kitchen was completely remodeled to be more efficient and the Penguin was reborn. Boasting a farm-to-table menu, the Penguin sources food locally and offers a seasonal fresh menu year-round, as well as a full bar. Using 100% organic, grass-fed beef and cage-free chicken, farm fresh locally sourced fruits and vegetables, excellent local Maryland crab, fresh fish and seafood, the restaurant serves up the finest and freshest local product available. Katie has not lost her Vermont roots, featuring pure maple syrup and Cabot cheese from her home state on the menu. During the summer, breakfast, lunch and dinner are served, while in the off-season breakfast and lunch are available on the weekends. The next time you get a hankering for fresh, honest food, go no further than the Penguin on Garfield Parkway in Bethany Beach, where they “are as concerned with what you put in your mouth as you are.”

AROUND THE Quiet ResortsCALL FOR 2018 NETWORKING HOSTS!

With 2018 looming just around the corner, the Chamber is busy confirming next year’s slate of networking events – and we need hosts! Hosting a net-working event is a great way to showcase your business to fellow Chamber members. All hosts are highlighted in E-Currents heading into the event, as well as mentioned here, in the monthly newsletter. Opportunities include:

Business After HoursTypically held on the fourth Wednesday of each month from 5 to 7 p.m. Host provides private space, food, and cash bar to accommodate 75+ guests.

Membership MeetingsTypically held on the first Thursday of the month from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. Host provides private space and breakfast for 50+ guests, while the Chamber helps offset the cost of breakfast with a per guest reimbursement following the event.

Connect for CoffeeTypically held on the second Tuesday or Wednesday of the month from 8:00 – 10:00 a.m. Host provides networking space for 20-30 guests, coffee, and breakfast (either complimentary or for purchase).

Not interested in hosting, but still want to get your business in front of Cham-ber members? Consider a Member Spotlight at an upcoming Business After Hours. For $100, member spotlights receive dedicated table space within the venue to promote your business and/or upcoming events, inclusion in event promo heading up to the event, plus a chance to plug your business during welcome remarks.

The Chamber is also interested in suggestions for networking topics. Let us know what you think we should cover in the coming year!
