From the Director:

SUMMER FUN FOR ALL AGES Looking for free, fun activities this summer for your kids, grandkids, teens, or YOURSELF? Check out the Riverside Regional Libraries! During June and July there will be prizes and incentives for reading, free programs for preschoolers, elementary age kids, teenagers, and adults, and more. Pick up the activity-packed calendar at any of the branches and join Summer Reading Club!

EMAIL ADDRESSES—DO WE HAVE YOURS? If you change your email address, please remember to let us know. You’ll get fast notifications of books you’ve put on hold, if you have items overdue that need to be returned, if you owe any fines, and more. Our circulation software will automatically email you courtesy notices which save time, postage, and manpower.

WHO CAN GET A RIVERSIDE REGIONAL LIBRARY CARD? Anyone (ages 5 and up) who lives or owns property anywhere in Scott, Perry, or Cape County (this includes residents inside the city limits of Cape Girardeau, Jackson, Chafee, and Sikeston), or any Missouri county adjacent to these three counties can get a RRL card for free.

WHY LIBRARY CARDS ARE NECESSARY… The number on your library card identifies you and only you—your contact information, the items you have checked out, the items you have on hold, family members you are responsible for, when your books are due back, and much more. Your library card is your security that other people are not checking out items in your name--items for which you would be held liable if they are not returned or if they come back damaged. A library card is no larger than a credit card or driver’s license--which no one seems to mind to carry. It’s such a small thing that can protect you and your library account. Keep it safe. And notify the library immediately if it is lost or stolen. We will quickly close that account and issue you a new card with a new number.

LET US KNOW HOW WE’RE DOING And if you’d like to write to us, our new email address is: [email protected] Tell us how we are doing, offer suggestions, make requests for items to be added to the collection (please include which library branch you visit). We would love to hear from you.

RIVERSIDE-SIKESTON COOPERATION Did you know that residents of the Riverside Library district located within the Sikeston R-6 school district and the residents of Country Acres Estates can use the Sikeston Public Library for free—no annual fee for a library card. This is made possible by a service contract in which Riverside pays Sikeston Public Library $15,000 a year so that our patrons can use the Sikeston Public Library without having to purchase a card there.

EXPLORE MISSOURI’S CIVIL WAR HISTORY Learn about Missouri’s key role in the struggle between the Union and the Confederacy and the importance of the Trans-Mississippi Theater. Read first-hand accounts about the impact of guerrilla warfare, martial law, forced displacement and economic chaos on the bitterly divided communities across the state. The Missouri State Library has been pleased to provide funding for a number of large-scale regional collaborations among Missouri’s libraries, archives, museums and historical societies. These projects have created a wealth of online collections that describe the Civil War in detail across all regions of Missouri. Includes a broad array of newspapers, diaries, letters, photos, court cases, military records, memoirs, and books. Click on “Collections” at http://www.sos.mo.gov/mdh/CivilWar/ Explore many more Missouri history collections at www.MissouriDigitalHeritage.com

MISSOURI DEATH CERTIFICATES Death certificates contain valuable information for family historians and researchers. The Missouri Death Certificate Database, produced by the Missouri State Archives, contains over 2 million death certificates for the years 1910 to 1961, making that information available online through a searchable index that links to a digitized image of the original death certificate. The index can be searched by first name and last name, county, and by year and month. Once a name is selected, a digitized image of the original certificate can be retrieved. Search at http: / /www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/
