A Decade Of RemembranceSpecial Commentary
By Tripp Liles
September 11, 2001.That is one of the most significant dates in
U.S. history. While the attacks of that dayspecifically hit targets in New York City, Wash-ington D.C. and rural Pennsylvania, the effectswere felt worldwide. We, as Americans, werespecifically and deeply affected.
As we reflect on that day, it’s important toremember how we felt. On that day we werenot defined by political affiliation, the color ofour skin, or by social status – we were simplyAmericans. United.
In the last decade, that sense of unity hasbeen seemingly lost. Our political leaders andnational media, representing both sides of thepolitical aisle, have chosen to forget the true
enemies who pose a real threat to our security, and have instead focused on demonizing fel-low citizens.
In all, 2,977 people from more than 90 na-tions perished during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In the Global war on Terror, allied forces havesuffered more than 362,611 casualties. Amongthose include more than 11,000 U.S. troopskilled worldwide, and more than 49,000Coalition and National (Iraqi and Afghan) sol-diers have been killed. Additionally more than2 million civilians have been killed orwounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Given these facts, perhaps we need to reflecton who our real enemies are. It’s important toremember, and return, to how we all felt on

The High End Stakes
Of Retail
In the end, has Roswell finally gotten things right for future growth?
By Tripp Liles
The economy, especi
ally on a national or
global scale, can be
confusing at best.
In our micro-econom
y, the area is experi-
encing a lot of the mi
xed signals and conf
usion
that exists nationally
. A big driving force
in the
economy overall, and
a segment that will
give
us signs of recovery,
are retailers. The sta
kes
for a local business o
wner are huge. Not j
ust
on a personal level, w
ith regards to what b
usi-
ness owners invest, b
ut also in the dollar
amounts available in
the local economy. A
c-
cording to the Burea
u of Labor Statistics,
con-
sumer spending on r
etail goods by Rosw
ell
residents totaled nea
rly $1.4 billion last y
ear –
yes that’s billion with
a B. That figure doe
s not
include areas such a
s East Cobb or neigh
bor-
ing Alpharetta, nor
the amount of money
spent by people visit
ing the area. That’s a
n av-
erage of nearly $40,
000 per household.
