SACE Isomax S current-limiting circuit-breakers:more solutions for every possible need
SACE Isomax S3X, S4X and S6Xcurrent-limiting circuit-breakers
The SAC E S3X - S4X - S6X models form a new range
of current limiting circuit-breakers, developed within
the SA C E Isomax S series of moulded-case circuit-
breakers.
These units are characterised by a rated service
voltage U e of 690 V a.c. , rated uninterrupted cur-
rents of 125 A to 630 A, service currents up to 630 A
and a rated limit short-circuit breaking capacity of
200 kA at 380/415 V a .c. and 75 kA at 690 V a .c.
T he circuit-break ers comply with the IE C 947-2
standards and are available in three and four-pole
fixed, plug-in and withdrawable versions.
The function of a current-limi ting circuit-breaker is to
the limit the specific let-through energy to a mini-
mum in the event of short-circuits, protecting the cir-
cuits and equipment downstream.
The breaking system adopted, which features two
fixed contacts for each pole, makes it possible to
provide extremely fast breaking for very high short-
circuit currents. In addition, the special shape of the breaking com-
ponents makes it possible to limit the peak fault cur-
rent to values that are significantly lower than those
of the short-circuit current in the point of installation.

breakers conforming tothe IEC 947- 2 international

that differ from those used for the corresponding au-
tomatic circuit-breakers and are listed in the chapter
entitled O rdering codes.
C onversely, the fixed parts of plug-in and withdraw-
able current-limiting circuit-breakers can be used
both for the current-limiting circuit-breakers them-
selves and for the corresponding SA C E S3 - S4 - S6
automatic circuit-breakers.
The same applies to the accessories. The S3X, S4X
and S6X current-limiting circuit-breakers can use the
same accessories as the corresponding automaticcircuit-break ers, which naturally retain the same elec-
trical characteristics.
The only exceptions are as follows:
the mechanical interlock plate for two vertically-
installed circuit-breakers
the bracket for mounting on a D IN channel.
The circuit diagrams for the SAC E S3X, S4X and S6X
circuit-breakers are the same as the corresponding
SA C E S3, S4 and S6 automatic circuit-breakers.
The current-limiting ci rcuit-break ers share the fol-
lowing characteristics with the automatic circuit-
breakers: the same standardised depth of 103.5 mm,
the same standardised widths of 105 (S3X-S4X) / 210
(S6X) mm for the three-pole versions and 140 (S3X-
S4X) / 280 (S6X) mm for the four-pole versions, the
same mounting holes for the plug-in and withdraw-
able versions and the same mounting holes on the
compartment door for all versions and all accesso-
ries.
The high opening speed significantly reduces the
electrodynamic stresses to which the circuit-break-
ers downstream are exposed in the event of a fault.
Integration with the SACE Isomax Sfamily
This range of current-limi ting circuit-breakers has
been conceived as a dedicated product for a spe-
cific use while at the same time being integrated in
the general SA C E Isomax S design.
This brings the user significant benefits, enabling
them to optimise stocks, standardise their support
and installation structures and rationalise circuit-
breaker selection thanks to a versatility that mak es it
possible to cover all their low-voltage application
requirements.
The new current-limi ting ci rcuit-break ers offer the
same benefits of modular construction as the SAC E
Isomax S series.
A ll the other versions can be created from the ba-
sic version using special conversion kits.
The conversion of the current-limi ting circuit-breaker
from a fixed part to a moving part for a plug-in orwithdrawable circuit-breaker uses conversion kits

Efficiency and flexibility in every application
Applications
These current-limiting circuit-breakers are suitable
for installation in all types of civi l, industrial and serv-
ice sector installations, as well as for electrical in-
stallations on board ships, in mines or on oil rigs, as
well as, generally speaking, in any installations where
high power generators and transformers make it pos-
sible for very high short-circuit currents of up to 200kA
at 380/415 V~ , 180 kA at 440 V~ and 75 kA at 690 V~
to occur.
The circuit-breakers can be positioned downstream
of the power supply either to provide general protec-
tion (installations, multi-user systems and electrical
lines) or for protecting electrical equipment (motors,
generators, transformers and capacitors).
They can also be fitted in systems where back-up
protection is required that allows the use of circuit-
breakers downstream which have a lower breaking
capacity than the prospective short-circuit current in
the point of installation.
The breaking capacities of the SAC E Isomax S cur-
rent-limiting circuit-breakers are higher than the bestvalues achieved by other units of this type.

The electrical characteristics of SA C E Isomax S
current-limiting circuit-breakers make it
possible to establish equivalents and
comparisons with the circuit-breakers in the old
SA C E Limitor series to determine replacements
for the latter when upgrading an installation.
The construction characteristics of these circuit-breakers
enable them to offer outstanding reliability, an essential
requisite to guarantee continuity of service under even
the most severe installation conditions.

Versions and connections
SA C E S3X, S4X and S6X current-limiting circuit-break-
ers are available in three-pole and four-pole fixed
(F), plug-in (P) and withdrawable (W) versions. It
should be noted that the fixed parts in the plug-in and
withdrawable versions are the same as the corre-
sponding S3, S4 and S6 automatic circuit-breakers.
In addition, as with the latter, the withdrawable cir-
cuit-breakers are always fitted with the front flange
for locks with a lever operating mechanism or, alter-
natively, with a rotary handle operating mechanismor motor operator.
The current-limiting circuit-breakers are character-
ised by a varied range of terminals that enable the
circuit-breaker to be connected to the installation in
the manner best suited to the installation require-
ments.
For some versions and type of terminals the supply
foresees the fitting of terminal covers (high or low).
These terminal covers form part of the circuit-break-
ers standard equipment.
In particular, low terminal covers are always required
for:
the fixed parts of plug-in or withdrawable circuit-
breakers
fixed circuit-breakers with threaded rear terminals
or spreaded extended front terminals,
and high terminal covers for:
fixed circuit-breakers with rear terminals for C u/A lcables.
The table below shows the basic version (fixed cir-
cuit-breaker with front terminals) and the various types
of terminals available with their related terminal cov-
ers.
If the terminal covers are not specified they must be
ordered separately.

Versions and connections
The different types of terminals, which can be com-
bined in different ways with one another (top of one
type, bottom of another), enable one to connect the
circuit-breaker to the installation in the most suitable
way to meet the installations requirements.
We can distinguish between:
front terminals that allow one to connect cables
or busbars, working directly from the front of the
circuit-breaker.
rear terminalswhich enable the circuit-breakersto be installed in switchboards with rear access to
either cable or busbar connections.
Terminals are available for connecting busbars or
cables terminated with cable terminals, as are termi-
nals for connecting bare wires directly. T he informa-
tion required to make the connections is summa-
rised for each type of terminal. D ifferent flat bar di-
mensions and compositions are recommended for
busbar connections. The minimum depth required
of flat bars with different compositions from those rec-
ommended are also specified. For bare cable con-
nections, the minimum and maximum cable cross-
section areas that can be clamped in the terminals
are shown together with the terminal diameter. The tightening torque values for the screws on cable
terminals and the screws for connecting busbars to
flat bar terminals are also shown.

Construction characteristics
SA C E S3X, S4X and S6X current-limiting circuit-break-
ers offer the highest standards of safety and operat-
ing reliability. T hanks to A BB SA C Es extensive expe-
rience in the field of L .V. moulded-case circuit-break-
ers and the tried and tested characteristics of the
SA C E Isomax S series from which the current-limit-
ing circuit-breakers have been developed.
The main construction characteristics of the current-
limiting circuit-breakers are listed below.
D ouble insulation with total segregation of the power
circuits and auxiliary circuits.
Easy to inspect, simply requiring one to remove the
cover with the circuit-breaker out of service, reduc-
ing operating times and installation down times.
M icroprocessor-based electronic releases ( for types
S4X and S6X) that meet the European Directives on
electromagnetic compatibility (EM C ) .
C ircuit-breaker can be racked in and out with the
compartment door closed, offering maximum opera-
tor safety and the possibility of building internal-arc-
proof switchboards.

Isolation behaviour. In the open position, the circuit-
breaker guarantees isolation of the circuit in compli-
ance with IEC Standard 947-2.
The insulation distances are ample, ensuring there
are no leakage currents and guaranteeing the di-
electric strength against any overvoltages across the
input and output.
Vibration resistance and possibility of using the cir-
cuit-breaker for naval and aseismatic installations.
The rated characteristics of the circuit-breaker re-
main unchanged irrespective of its installation posi-
tion.
A fibreglass-reinforced synthetic resin moulded in-
sulating case, corrosion-proofed main metal com-
ponents and appropriate galvanising enable use in
damp - saline climates.
Protection grade IP20 for all versions (excluding the
terminals) and IP30 for the front parts of circuit-break-
ers installed in switchboards.
Possibility of achieving protection grade IP54 for cir-
cuit-breakers installed in switchboards with compart-
ment door-mounted crank handle operating mecha-
nisms by using special seals available to order.

Operating temperature
Conditions of use and power loss values
SA C E Isomax S3X - S4X - S6X current-limiting circuit-
breakers can be used in ambient conditions in which
the temperature of the surrounding atmosphere is
between -25 C and + 70 C.
C ircuit-breakers fitted with a thermomagnetic over-
current release have the thermal element set for a
reference temperature of +40 C .
The thermal tripping threshold for a given setting falls
at temperatures between + 40 C and + 70 C due to
the behaviour of the releases bimetal strip in relationto temperature.
C onversely, one needs to take an increase in the
thermal tripping threshold into account for tempera-
tures below +40 C (see table) .
The microprocessor-based electronic overcurrent re-
leases do not undergo any changes in performance
with changes in temperature. But one does need to
reduce the maximum overload protection setting (L)
to take into account the phenomena that occur in the
copper parts of the circuit breakers through which
the phase current passes (moving contacts, fixed
contacts and connection terminals) and which lead
to a fall in the rated uninterrupted current.
C ircuit-break er performance is not guaranteed for
temperatures above + 70 C .
In order to ensure continuity of operation for an in-stallation, one needs to carefully evaluate how to
keep the temperature within acceptable levels for
the operation of all the various devices concerned
and not just the circuit breakers by, for example, us-
ing forced ventilation in the switchboards and in the
rooms where they are installed.

SA C E S3X - S4X - S6X circuit-breakers do not undergo any change in their rated
performance up to a height of 2000 m.
A s the height increases, changes occur in the properties of the atmosphere
regarding its composition, d ielectric capaci ty, cooling power and pressure.
The performance of the circuit-breakers therefore undergoes derating that can
essentially be measured in terms of the changes in the main parameters such as
the maximum rated operating voltage and rated uninterrupted current.

Notes The contact isolators on the fixed parts of S3-S4 circuit-breakers (p lug-in and withdrawable versions) have been modified (during 1997) to
make them suitable for the movi ng pa rts of S3X-S4X current-limiting circuit-breakers.
The new contact isolators are supplied in the conversion ki t for S3X-S4X models (used for converting them into moving parts) . T he operation
is simple to perform and can be carried out by the user with the help of the instructions supplied. It enables one to maintain the compatibility
of S3X-S4X models and S3-S4 fixed parts that are already stored in the warehouse or installed.
The modification is not required on S3X or S4X current-limiting ci rcuit-breakers that are supplied complete with fixed parts or on fixed parts
purchased after February 1998.
The contact isolators can be supplied as spare parts if required.
The existing fixed parts for S3-S4 circuit-break ers are not compatible with current-limi ting apparatus if they are fitted with front terminals for
copper cables FC C u.
