Welcome to our annual programme of courses and events. In 2016, we are delighted to welcome many new faces to our course programme including Andrew Griffiths, Ivor Twydell, Mary Reynolds

Thompson and Masashi Minagawa.

Other tutors include Chloe Goodchild, Satish

Kumar, Gavin Pretor-Pinney and Martin Sandbrook, following their attendance at Seed Festival: Planting Big Ideas in 2015.

We are also delighted to be hosting the Rising Women Rising World programme, alongside the many other trainings we host here.

Welcome to Hawkwood, an ethical centre providing courses,

facilitating training, offering venue hire and home of the

Centre for Future Thinking.

Our vision is about creating the world we want for now

and our future. We are a place that convenes people and

organisations from many disciplines in support of creative

endeavour, a flourishing society and a sustainable environment.

We aim to nurture and develop creativity that is personally

fulfilling and resource people to respond positively to our

current and future societal and environmental context.

Founded in 1948, Hawkwood is a registered charity and its

educational activity supports the wellbeing of people and

planet through diverse approaches. Situated in a Grade II

listed 19th Century country house, Hawkwood is surrounded

by 42 acres overlooking the Severn Vale, and includes

sustainably managed woodland, gardens and farmland

located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Hawkwood’s Centre for Future Thinking programme provides a space for people to come together to explore their own and society’s values, and to question and debate the future of a rapidly changing world.

Rising Women Rising World is a growing, vibrant community of women on

all continents who take responsibility for co-creating a world that works for all.

The custodians of this mission are a committed group of professionals, who, over the

past 30 years have been shaping their respective fields: economics, business,

governance, security, health, ecology, media, culture, arts, education, spirituality and

indigenous wisdom. Our global network, power of collaboration and strategic

a campaigner on the ground in India and

Hetty Einzig is an independent executive

with individuals, teams and groups in the areas

Helen ChadwickFriday 19 – Sunday 21 FebruaryA creative, rewarding and accessible

weekend for anyone who would like to

try composing songs. Starting with

simple phrases and harmonies, we will

build up songs in different ways,

working individually, in pairs and in

small groups. Bring along any texts or

poems you would like to compose into

songs, and musical instruments are

welcome too. Suitable for people with

some experience of harmony singing.

Helen Chadwick is a performance

creator, singer and composer whose work

has been commissioned by the Royal Opera

House, English Touring Opera and the BBC.

She has written over 250 songs and has

recorded 10 albums.

Exquisite Japanese EmbroideryMonday 21 - Friday 25 FebruaryThis unique art form originated in

Buddhist temples and is used for the

elaborate decoration of Kimonos. This

rarely taught skill has been based at

Hawkwood for over fifteen years. Using

traditional methods and techniques you

will produce truly stunning works of art

and learn about Japanese culture. All

for over 20 years and Japanese Embroidery

for 18 years. She has exhibited in England,

Folk Orchestra and Ukulele WeekendFriday 12 – Sunday 14 FebruaryWhatever acoustic instrument you play

welcome if you would like to sing. We’ll

work through about eight tunes and

songs, splitting into smaller groups

the Aurora Ensemble returns to

Chamber Music Course. The course is

Discovering WineFriday 22 – Sunday 24 AprilMonty Waldin’s down-to-earth

approach to wine and passion for

biodynamics was revealed in his

Channel 4 show Chateau Monty. Join us

for a weekend to learn about the

history of wine, tastings and how to

make wine. This weekend will enable

you choose and enjoy wines with

renewed confidence.

Monty Waldin is a biodynamic wine

writer, critic, consultant and wine grower and

a leading authority on organic wine and

biodynamic wine. In 2007 he was the star of

the Channel 4’s Chateau Monty, following his

project to establish a new biodynamic

vineyard in the south of France. He currently

lives in Tuscany and will be coming to the UK

for this course.

There will be an open talk and wine tasting at 8pm on Saturday 23 April

Running with the Mind of MeditationFriday 29 April – Sunday 1 May This weekend is for new, casual or very

experienced runners. It is about

running and the mind that runs!

There will be an introduction, guided

mindfulness/awareness meditation,

group discussions and a chance to talk

one-to-one with the tutors about

meditation and your running style and

any problems that you encounter.

Our runs will take us into the

beautiful Cotswold landscape

surrounding Hawkwood.

John Seex is a psychotherapist,

organisational consultant and part-time

runner! John has also been practising and

teaching meditation for over 20 years and is

a student in the Shambhala tradition.

Henry Astor is a film maker based in

Oxfordshire and an avid runner who

daily basis.

Our education programmeWe offer financial assistance to people to attend our

courses through the Eileen Nesfield-Cookson bursary

fund. Last year we supported over 45 participants to attend

our courses who would otherwise not have been able to

afford to come.

Our placeIn addition, each year, we need to raise £25,000 to support

our maintenance fund. Our plans include a major

refurbishment of bathrooms and bedrooms as well as

improving the wider estate facilities such as our new

community farm build with Stroud Community Agriculture.

programme which we hope will have national impact and

will give artists, musicians, writers and theatre

practitioners the opportunity to come and stay at

Hawkwood and create work.

Our programme will offer all manner of creative people time

and space away from their usual environment and

obligations and provide a time of reflection, research,

collaboration, presentation and/or production.

We will be welcoming individuals and groups of artists to

stay and create work here which we hope to show case in

our events programme and with informal exhibitions.

A Pathless LandSensory Labyrinth TheatreWhat will boundaries look like in the future?September 2016This two-week project centres round a Sensory Labyrinth

Theatre installation, an immersive experience and a

combination of experiential research into borders,

belonging, nationalism, equality, emigration, immigration,

social change, environmentalism, diversity, inclusivity and

global citizenship. The sensory labyrinth theatre combines

compassion, courage and artistic wizardry. It will take your

thinking well out of the box and into the future. With sincere

enquiry at its heart our project will inspire hope and original,

creative action.

our cateringHawkwood prides itself on providing delicious healthy meals and sourcing ingredients that are home grown, local, fair-trade, seasonal and organic as far as possible.

All our meals are home cooked and prepared daily on site

by experienced, excellent cooks with meat and vegetarian

options. Some of the produce comes from the kitchen walled

garden and Stroud Community Agriculture’s biodynamic

farm on site. Ethical food suppliers Essential Trading, Bristol

and Global Organics, Stroud make a weekly delivery.

Our tea and coffee is organic fair trade and supplied by

Ethical Addictions of Gloucester. Tom Morrow supplies the

biodynamic cordials and our licensed bar serves organic

wine from Vintage Roots and organic Wyldwood Cider from

H. Weston’s & Sons, Ledbury. Organic beer is supplied by

Stroud Brewery, who also bring the spent organic malt up to

the Stroud Community Agriculture farm to feed the pigs.

A typical day begins with a generous breakfast buffet

including eggs and porridge, then homemade biscuits for

morning coffee break, a two course lunch, homemade cake

in the afternoon, and all rounded off with a vegetarian

supper for residential guests. We can cater for almost all

dietary requirements if advance notice is given.

how to find usCar: access Stroud from the M5 (J13) or M4

westbound (J15) via the A419. On reaching

the town, follow signs for the A46 towards

Cheltenham. Pass under the railway viaduct,

past the Vue Cinema (on the right), turn left

(1st exit) at the roundabout, and bear right

(2nd exit) at the next roundabout.

Turn right onto Painswick Old Road

(signposted ‘Wick Street’). Hawkwood is

a mile up the road, on the right.

Train: Stroud is on the London Paddington

to Cheltenham Spa line, just over 1.5 hours

from London and 35 minutes from

Cheltenham, where there are connections

to Birmingham and the north. The station is

30-40 minutes walk from Hawkwood and

taxis are usually available.

Coach: Stroud has a limited National

Express coach service from London’s Victoria

Coach Station, Heathrow Airport and from

several other cities.

Air: Nearest airports are Bristol (40 miles;

bus/train), Birmingham (70 miles; train) and

London Heathrow (100 miles; coach/train).
