● Nuclear power is the 5th largest source of electricity in India after coal,

gas, hydroelectricity and wind power. Up to march 2018, India has 7

nuclear power plants and there 22 nuclear reactors are in operation in

the country. India has total installed nuclear capacity of 6,780 MW.

● India's and Asia's first nuclear reactor was the Apsara research reactor

at Mumbai . The domestic uranium reserve in India is small and country

is dependent on uranium imports from other country to provide fuel to

its nuclear power industry. Since 1990s, Russia has been a major

supplier of nuclear fuel to India.

● The Iran–Israel proxy conflict, or Iran–Israel proxy warand Iran–Israel Cold War, is a proxy

war between Iran and Israel in the 21st century. The conflict is bound in the political struggle

of Iranian leadership against Israel and its declared aim to dissolve the Jewish state, with the

counter aim of Israel to prevent nuclear weapons being acquired by the Iranian government

and downgrading its allies and proxies such as the Lebanese Hezbollah political-militant

organization.

● The conflict gradually emerged from Iran's hostile stance toward Israel following the Iranian

Revolution 1979, into covert Iranian support of Hezbollah during the South Lebanon conflict

(1985–2000) and by 2005 developed into a proxy regional conflict. In 2006, Iran was actively

involved in supporting Hezbollah during the 2006 Lebanon War and in parallel began

supporting Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Israel, on the other hand, initiated a

campaign to harm the Iranian nuclear program, utilizing several anti-regime militias within

Iran. Upon the onset of the Syrian Civil War, the conflict escalated and by 2018 turned into

direct Iranian-Israeli warfare.

● Key issues in the conflict include Iran's support of groups opposing Israel,

Israel's support of anti-Iranian rebel groups, Iran's nuclear program, and

Israel's ties with other rivals of Iran such as Saudi Arabia and the United

States. The involvement of both countries in the Syrian Civil War has created

additional possibilities for direct conflict between the two states.

● Iran has provided significant support to Hezbollah Hamas and PIJ, whereas

Israel has supported the People's Mujahedin of Iran and has conducted

assassinations and attacks against Iranian targets directly. Israel has also

conducted cyber warfare against Iran, and has publicly advocated for

international military action against Iran.

diplomatic initiatives.

● The Lipulekh pass is a far western point near

Kalapani. Both India and Nepal claim Kalapani as an

integral part of their territory - India as part of

Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district and Nepal as part

of Dharchula district.

Central Railway zone has developed a robotic device,

"RAIL-BOT" (R-BOT).

● The device has been developed to assist in the

functions of hospital management so that they can

provide better health care to the COVID patients.

● R-BOT is being used to provide medicines, medical

accessories and to serve food to the patients, without

any need for physical contact.

● Using this device will enable doctors, nurses and

other support medical staff to stay away from the risk

of contracting infections.

● The R-BOT is operated through a unique mobile

application developed as part of the Innovation,

supported by Wi-FI- facility.

● The R-BOT holds sensor-based features to read the

body temperature of patients and transmit the same

for display on Mobile phones.

the 2019 Alexander Dalrymple Award in recognition of

his outstanding contribution to Indian hydrography and

across the wider Indian Ocean region.

• He is the National Hydrographer to the government of

India.

• The award, first presented by the UK Ministry of

Defence-sponsored UKHO in 2006, is named after the

first Hydrographer of the Admiralty, Alexander

Dalrymple.

• The recipients of the award are selected by the chief

Committee of the UK Hydrographic Office(UKHO) for

his or her efforts in raising the standards of

hydrography, cartography and navigation around the

● A new prey and predator estimation in Tadoba

Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) in Chandrapur district

has found the presence of 115 tigers and 151

leopards inside the 1,727 sq km of the core and

buffer areas of the reserve in 2019.

● The estimation was done as part of the ‘Long-term

monitoring of tigers, co-predators and prey species in

TATR’.

● As many as 88 tigers have been individually captured

in trap camera pictures, the report states.

● It also mentions that the leopard population in TATR

was 151.

● Although the tiger numbers appear to be up as

compared to 2018, the population density shows a

decline from 5.51 to 5.23 per 100 sq km.

● The sun is said to have gone into a state called the

‘solar minimum’ and is about to enter the deepest

period of ‘sunshine recession’ as sunspots are virtually

not visibly at all.

● Some reports suggest that it has been almost 100 days

this year when the sun has shown zero sunspots.

● Sun has a cycle that lasts on average 11 years, and

right now we are at the peak of that cycle.

● Every 11 years or so, sunspots fade away, bringing a

period of relative calm. This is called the solar

minimum. And it’s a regular part of the sunspot cycle.

● While intense activity such as sunspots and solar flares

subside during solar minimum, that doesn’t mean the

sun becomes dull.

● Solar activity simply changes form.

● For instance, during solar minimum we can see the

development of long-lived coronal holes.

● But, this may cause health risks to astronauts travelling

through space as “the sun’s magnetic field weakens

and provides less shielding from these cosmic rays.”

the executive board was signed by the 194-

nation at the 73rd World Health Assembly

between 18-19 May, 2020.

elected to the executive board for a three-

year-term beginning from May, 2020.

17 per cent decline in global carbon emissions due to COVID-19 lockdown

● The coronavirus-triggered lockdown has led to a

steep fall in global carbon emissions by 17 per

cent in early April as compared to 2019 levels

with India's emissions dropping by 26 per cent.

● An international study published in the UK-based

journal National Climate Change showed that the

world experienced a sharp decline in carbon

emissions between January and April, compared

to average levels in 2019, and could decline

anywhere between 4.4 per cent to 8 per cent by

the end of this year.

● The study confirmed that the impact of the

confinement on annual emissions in 2020 is likely

to lead to the largest single annual decrease in

absolute emissions since the end of World War

II.

● Besides India, other countries like the UK and the

US reduced 30.7 per cent and 31.6 per cent

emissions, respectively. In China, the emissions

reduced by 23.9 per cent, the study revealed.

• Shaukat Ali was born in 1873 in Rampur state in what is today Uttar Pradesh in India but later played role in partition of India on religious lines.

• He was educated at the Aligarh Muslim University. • Ali served in the civil service of the United Provinces of Oudh and Agra for 17 years in
