Sampling Plan, Administration, and Weighting

The 2002 CUNY Student Experience Survey

For the 2002 CUNY Student Experience Survey, the University mailed questionnaires to 21,000 undergraduate degree students, chosen from among students attending one of the University’s seventeen community or senior colleges in spring 2002. From the colleges that offer only the associate degree or offer only the bachelor’s degree, a random sample of 1000 students was drawn from among all degree students enrolled at that college. From colleges offering both the associate and bachelor’s degree, two such samples were drawn – one from among the associate students, one from the bachelor’s students. A copy of the survey was mailed to each of the 21,000 students in April 2002. Students who did not respond to the initial mailing were mailed a second copy of the survey. Those still not responding were mailed a third survey and a reminder postcard. The mailings were spaced over a ten-week period. In all, 6,402 students returned the survey – a response rate of 30.5%. The survey results were weighted to compensate for response bias – the under representation or over representation of discrete groups in the pool of respondents. (If, for example, women respond to the survey at a higher rate than men do, this over representation is compensated for in the weight assigned to each case.) Responses were also adjusted to insure that each college is represented in proportion to its share of the university’s total enrollment of undergraduate degree students. An analysis of the weighted responses indicates that the weighted data are representative of the population from which the samples were drawn.
